Farren Ray

I have never rated him, he doesn't give us a lot, he can run and carry but usually butchers the ball and it comes straight back over his head.

Zero defensive pressure and gets into position to mark and invariably drops the ball.

Trade, trade, trade.....

I cannot believe supporters wanting to trade Ray for good ordinary players from other clubs.

Farren Ray went at number 4 in the draft. He is only 22 years old. Players usually peak when they are 23-26. He hasn't reached his peak yet.

Yes, he is going through a trough at the moment, but he has a lot of mates. He just looks out totally lost on confidence.

Sometimes he lacks hardness in certain areas but he is an outside player. All teams need them. He compliments our strengths which is hard run and good skills. His best is extremely good.

He has talent and with two new teams coming into the comp, you need to stockpile your talent as it is going to be harder and harder to recruit new talent into the team.IMO we shouldn't trade him. I would keep him for sure.

We need to look at the long term view rather than looking at a couple of bad games here or there.

LOL, Boyd, Gia and West are ten times the player Ray is. At least Addison shows some potential. Ray is second worst midfielder in team possibly last

Have to agree with Ctrain, however damned near all except Lake and Johnson looked lethargic. Would definitely trade Ray. Hasn't come up anything like Cooney or Griffen, but when he was caught from behind who warned him? No talking.

Yet think of Sam Power - little value after his years with the Dogs but is giving the Roos fair value. Ray might do likewise. Hill, Harbrow and Higgins will give better value.
Need an in depth assessment of the youngsters and their anticipated time to come up before any thought of delisting.

How times have changed. Only two or three years ago everyone was calling for Boyd's head and mentioning his name in the same breath as Power and Birss.

I have no doubt Ray will prove many wrong as well, if he wants to do that back home, then lets get all we can for him.

you have got to be kidding...
ray better than west, gia and boyd? thats a joke

ray is one of the weakest, stupidest players on the team. he might show a bit of flare at times, but thats once in a blue moon. the guy is a dud and perfect trade bait.
and to compare hunter to ray would be like comparing franklin to rawlings.... there is no similarities, one of them is 40,000,000,000x better than the other.
(i also believe that there is another thread on this dud)

How does one qualify as both being a dud and perfect trade bait? Definitely has his limitations, but is better than his trade value would reflect.

A lot of hot air being expelled on this thread. Who else in the current 22 actually takes the opposition on with run and carry? If Cooney is well held, we have precious little explosive running power in the midfield apart from Ray and Griffen. Who do we have waiting in the wings that offers the same running capacity? Higgins and Ward will both be players but neither can be classed as especially quick. Hill possibly, that's about it. Ray is one of the last players on our list I'd consider trading.

When he got mown down, where was the shepard, where was the player running alongside him to provide a handball option, where was the talk? There were 3 Bulldog players running with him when he took possession but they dropped off prety quickly. He makes mistakes from time to time but I'd rather see more of our players take the opposition on like Ray does.

Agree. One player (Tiller) ran hard to provide a shephard on the wing to get Ray into a running position, but nobody else told him he was hot & needed to dispose of the ball.
I'm happy Ray took the play on, as that is the only way to beat top sides. Taking the safe option every time is why we traded Power. Sam had good disposal, just a reactionary player. I'll accept mistakes if a player is being proactive.

Very ordinary piece of play. He actually turned around and looked at the Roos player before he got tackled but continued to run at the same pace even though the Roos bloke was closing on him.
wait a minute, i must admit i dont really rate him, but at least in this case he was having a crack, he had no one to kick to, and no one was talking to him, give the guy some slack in this scenario. i just dislike it when he goes missing.

Id hang onto him, give him another year at this point he can still be classed as a young developing player but next year hes going to have to start coming into his own and repaying the faith otherwise its time to move him on.

This thread may need a reality check. Its not so black and white I wouldn't have thought.

Whilst I won't lay claim to being a big wrap for Ray - he has shown improvement this year and has definitely been a hell of a lot braver than he was previously. His defensive efforts have been pretty good - its really just his use of teh ball that lets him down at times. He seems a bit undecided at times and I'd like to see him back himself more.

He got chased down yesterday because:
a) The North player was extremely quick.
b) there mustn't have been talk - and that how he reacted.
c) he wasn't getting any leads
d) he can be prone to indecisiveness.

Apart from that - he was reasonable for the day.

Usually I sit in access one on level 2 - but sitting behind the bench yesterday - he was one that seemed super eager and itching to get back on all the time - which impressed me that he seemed to have some grunt in him.

I'd like to see him continue to be given the run with roles. He'll continue to improve.

The problem with Ray and has been since day one is this. He goes from 'HERO to 'ZERO' in the space of one passage of play.

I like the fact that he tries but he tries to look smooth or use his opposite side of his body when he does not need to.

In all honesty though the main things that annoy me about Ray is he makes a 4 meter handpass to a team mate look very very hard and more times then not he butchers the kick and Handpass.

These things can be worked on and he will be a better player for it but Ray dont try to do the special things when you haven't mastered the basics first.

First, let me say that I have always liked Eagle as a player, and I have nothing against Street. But after yesterday's game I have come to the conclusion that Ray is worth keeping (unless something really tall and decent is offered in return) and that Street and Eagle must go at year's end. Neither will get any better and although both can play a role at times, they are the sort of players we must get rid off to make way for younger blood.

It pains me to say it but Eagle's left foot just isn't as reliable as it used to be and he can't keep up on the defensive end. Ray will get better.:thumbsu:

I've always stuck up for Eagleton too, but when he kicked that ball on the full from the pocket it made me think he doesn't have much longer left. He would have nailed it two or three years ago.

At least Ray has a crack. The last couple of weeks he has been played as a tagger. WHY? His best position is running up and down the wings from back to forward and taking courageous marks in defence and setting up goals in attack. Get off his back.

Gia had 21 possies on the weekend (19 uncontested and 3 clearances)

Cooney gets tagged and walks around like my granny with her boobs dragging on the ground. When was the last time Cooney took a tagger and dragged his arse around the park for 100 minutes. NEVER. Almost be classified as a front runner. Showed what level he is at in the Origin game when he looked slow and out of it.

Griffin plays one and half quarters then you don't see him. One trick pony who swivels his hips and kicks long.

Boyd and Cross easily our best two midfielders- EASILY I tells ya.

Eagleton same boat as Gia. Both a rung above Cooney in the front runner stakes.

Aker - has been down the last couple of weeks but we know what he can produce and it may just be around the corner, (or maybe it isn't), it's up to the other guys to show us what they can do, if they have what it takes, because I don't think as individuals, they can.

Why does Ray become the scapegoat from this game when he was a tagger? Taggers are supposed to be stopping men, NOT TRYING TO MAKE THE PLAY LIKE OUR MIDFIELDERS SHOULD BE DOING.

Get off his back. Everyone agrees his best game was the 2006 final against Collingwood, which it was, but his role has changed for some reason and we may never see that again.

Anyhoo finals are around the corner and I'll attend once again for another episode of uncertainty.

I disagree about him kicking goals from that deep in the pocket. He has a massive hook and was never going to kick that.....

Let me give you one great example.....remember 2000 round 21. Late in the game, we are peppering the goals when Eagleton gets the ball from a mark or free kick......About 40 out on the 60 deg angle, his kick is hooked to wards the and beyond the far point post.....Dustin Fletcher....trying to contest the ball accidentially kicks it out on the full....Chris Grant, as history tells us slotted the winning goal....

So I am not sure Eagleton would ever kick too many from the area on the ground.....just totally against his kicking style.

I'd like him at Freo. We may be moving Ryan Murphy on and there is talk of Mundy and Warnock wanting to go back to Vic. There would be something for both sides there if Ray wants to come home. Could be interesting in trade week.

iv'e only brought names up in the past simply due to the fact he hasn't resigned. his not a bad player and can do some nice things i personally think he has gone backwards this year while the team has been going forwards. if we hold onto him will i be dissapointed? no if we trade him for a decent player will i be dissapointed? no.

I used to watch Murphy at South Freo, excellent for them but just seems to drift out of games at the AFL level.

Could Mundy give us anything from the half back flank or does his future lie as a midfielder?

What about Warnock? Do we need another ruckman?

Thoughts?
