He was a damn good player R2R, very much worthy of being in that 1980 premiership team. I honestly think if Bourke hadn’t destroyed his shoulder at that last training session before the GF, and he played in the game, we’d have comfortably beaten Carlton that day.
I was at that last training session and what Bourke put him through was beyond ridiculous. Cost us a flag imo, I’ll never forget it
He was a good player but i have atleast 10-12 players well ahead of him in my 1980 side
I suppose MM as a person post Richmond influences my opinion of him massively

Just a flog of a human

Check out old interviews with Malthouse. He says it was fair as it showed it wouldn't have stood up on the day. He wasn't bitter at all just disappointed. I think Rhett Bartlett might even have an hour long interview with him in amongst his collections. Maybe I heard it at a sportsmans night? But heard him defend Bourke's decision numerous times and say he would've done the same thing as a coach. I've long since pushed the memory of the 2015 Elimination final out of my mind but remember we took 3 injured/ underdone players. All 3 bombed and 2 broke down during the game. I remember Hardwick getting crucified for admitting they brought Griffiths in a MONTH earlier than surgeon said from hand surgery and he never touched it.

Funny thing is if anyone bothers to relive the 2013-2015 1st round finals debacles they'll soon learn that many players like Edwards, Cotchin, etc were putrid. Then again I suspect a lot of the people around here pumping their tyres up as consistent finals performers wouldn't know that as they only sat down on the bandwagon in 2017.

A good FS pick right now would be gold, thankfully they haven’t changed the drafting rules on FS like they have on academy players, not that we ever get any decent players from our region
And they've just changed the mid-season draft rules so there's no certainty we'll be able to replace George.

I see that Maria Rioli (goes by the name Mia), won the B&F for the Tiwi Bombers.

I too was at that 1982 Thursday night training sesh , pity we couldn’t find a place for Brian Taylor , too top heavy I guess and cloke had played well in the sec semi . Not sure if MM would have made that much difference , rock solid player , prob in class of broad I’d say

GOALS:
Country:
L. Charleson 3, R. Maric 3, J. Nannup 2, B. Dowling, A. Day-Wicks, M. Scoullar, F. O’Sullivan
Metro: N. Caddy 4, B. Hicks 2, C. Dear 2, L. Young 2, R. Weatherill, T. Gross

RMC BEST:
Country:

Metro: T. Gross, N. Caddy, N. King, H. Johnston, C. Naish

#14 Charlie Naish (Northern Knights)
04/05/2005 | 187cm | 79kg | Utility

Naish is another prospect who has broken into representative consideration at Talent League levl, and showed a few more signs of his class on Saturday. The Richmond father-son candidate started on a wing and was relatively quiet, but began to get his hands on the ball once shifted to half-back. He took a couple of intercept marks and was typically productive in transition, hitting passes on the move.

Interesting that he played some different roles to what he had been playing recently for the knights (mid/fwd)

Versatility is a great asset in todays game

Looks like a solid performance from the lad

I was at the match and watched the replay and would be staggered if he touched the ball more than 10 times and none of those were contested. Like his brother, give him the ball and he looks classy but looking flash and getting your hands on the ball are two different things.

“ TIGERS EYE FATHER-SON
RICHMOND father-son prospect Charlie Naish spent part of the school holidays training at Punt Road, as he continues to emerge on the radar of recruiters ahead of November's AFL Draft.

The 17-year-old is eligible to join the Tigers via the father-son rule after his dad Chris played 143 games for Richmond between 1990 and 1997, before finishing his career at Port Adelaide.

Naish has put himself firmly in Vic Metro contention following a strong start to the Coates Talent League season for Northern Knights.

The Ivanhoe Grammar product produced some eye-catching moments in the Victorian under-18 trials at Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday, playing on a wing and across half-back.

Richmond selected Naish's older brother Patrick under the father-son rule – he played nine games for the Tigers and 11 more for West Coast but is now playing for Box Hill – and will consider playing Charlie in the VFL later in the year.

The Tigers struck gold with Matthew Richardson and Joel Bowden in the 1990s but have only selected three father-sons this century. They will be keeping a close eye on the progress of Naish this winter. – Josh Gabelich”

What a blessing it would be if we get a first round pick despite not owning one!

Blair the visionary

No idea where he’s projected to go, but how funny if he gets into R1 calculations by draft time
Stroke of genius getting rid of that R1 pick 😂
His brother was getting talked up as being a 10-20 range player by some and specially Cal Twomey just before the draft but most thought he would be late 2nd to mid 3rd.

Charlie was talked about as being the better player but thats always the case
From whats being reported i think the same range as his brother

Can’t remember if Patrick played for metro in the National Championships, but sounds from the trials Charlie might be a chance

If he happens to make it he’ll get his chance to push his name higher up the pecking order

Then there’s the draft combine, I’m not sure if he’s a better athlete than Patrick, he’s certainly a lot bigger.

Looking at his size 188/79kg it’s looking like he may be a late developer, I’m pretty sure he wasn’t that size last year. He could be one of those kids that comes from the clouds.

Interesting to see his development btwn now and the draft

He was always going to be bigger than Pat going by that picture taken when pat was drafted where they were nearly the same height and i think Charlie was like 12 years old then.

Hope he does become a good player and gets drafted but going by whats been reported he doesnt sound like a 1st round talent

That's not right is it?

Maurice Rioli Jr
Patrick Naish
Tom Roach
Andrew Raines

Others?

I have a feeling that one of Tom Roach or Andrew Raines (I think it was Rainsey) wasn’t selected as a father-son.

This was before the new rules around F/S were put in place, but I think you still had to nominate (but it wasn’t a match bid required) but Raines wasnt. Richmond selected him anyway.

That’s my vague recollection of it; so likely incorrect.

My vague memory was that we could only nominate one and decided to nominate Roach and then selected Raines as well separately but that could be totally off the mark

Naishy Jnr has a fair way to go. Very outside. Sits on the outside of contests waiting for a handball which is the same as his brother. Very similar kicking action also. On the plus side he is taller and a better mark than Paddy though so is dangerous in the air.

Richmond launches Matthew Richardson Academy

Past players and their families were invited back to the Club last week to launch the new Matthew Richardson Academy.

The Matthew Richardson Academy will be a program for the families of all former Richmond players- not just those identifiable for selection to the Club through such eligibility.

Smart move by the club, a bit late for Ben Hollands's sons, but good for others like Nathan Brown, Leon Cameron etc. It's great to show them a bit of love when they're kids. A few free jumper's, shorts, socks, boots, game tickets, hot dogs cost nothing in the scheme of things of the $100,000,000 annual turnover. These kids getting some elite training tips and guidance, even just talking to someone like Dusty for 5 minutes will leave a lasting impression on them. Ya never know some kid like a future Elijah Hollands would remember the way the club looked after them as kids, when it comes time to decide which club they want to swap to. The NGA has been a complete waste of time and money, pump the money into children of former players instead. Knowing our luck, we'll finally have an NGA prospect and they'll get snaffled before pick 40 anyway.

Would work better if there was no draft like the NRL.
