what are those cheap kegs like, you know the german branded ones, with the red-lining you see them in safeway liquor on special 2 for $$50.

Bought a carton of Foster's for 29.90 the other day having never tried it before. Was very surprised and liked it a lot.

About 2-3 years ago it was my beer of choice. The amount of people that would scoff at the thought of drinking a Fosters was ridiculous until you ask them ''have u actually had one''. When my local bottle-o stopped stocking them i gave up trying to find them.

I've been reading this thread periodically and it seems to me like the beer scene is taking off a bit in Australia. When I was last there (five years ago) it seemed like you couldn't find a craft brew anywhere. What's changed? Maybe I just didn't go to the right places? I'm glad to hear it, though. I don't mind the odd VB but it can't hold a candle to a really interesting craft brew.

One of the great things about the US is the massive diversification of the beer industry recently. Don't go thinking that it's all about Bud and Miller over here (though they are still the big boys). So much choice that it's ridiculous. Is it getting that way back home or are the big boys (Carlton, VB, Tooheys) still the main brew of choice?

IMO Fosters Lager is quite surprisingly a nice beer, and amazing it comes from the same joint as VB.

Although we pay upwards of 50 bucks a carton in regional South Aus.

It got quite a bad wrap from somewhere. It might have been from travellers drinking Fosters overseas, as the stuff over there is brewed over there and is totally different to the Fosters Lager (that has become quite hard to find) in Australia.

Why is that ? I can only get it at one bottlo where i live, and its very expensive. I'll get a carton for a treat once every two months.

Its meant to be the face of Australia beer, so it should be like running water. :p

Im very fond of it. Always will be.

It changes all the time.

But right now: Knappstein, Weihenstaphner Pislner, Squires Sundown and Peroni (so good to smash during summer).

Can somebody tell me about Guinness...?

I have had it a few times on tap, but haven't for a couple of years. I remember it being great, and I liked it a lot. Bought a couple of cans the other day, it seemed quite different to me...very little taste, which sort of made the bitterness a little too unbearable for me.

Is having it on tap compared to in the can all that different, or am I just not remembering it properly?

Also, I am going for some Greek meat on the weekend, what would you recommend go with a big ass plate of meat?

I haven't been able to drink another Guinness since I went to Ireland. Absolutely stunning beer. I haven't found a can since I returned that comes close to it.

Yeah its surprising how much choice they have over there... its not like they have a higher demand. The populations only 300 million

Guiness served here is usually crap. The beer itself is OK, it's just the temperature they store it in the tap or the can is far too low. Stouts should be kept at a higher temperature than a lager or regular ale. I always find whenever i order a Guiness it tastes like milk....the coldness kills the taste of it.

Order one, wrap your hands around it for 5 minutes, give it a swirl, then have a sip :thumbsu: Toohey's old stout aint' too shabby either.:thumbsu:

Meat? I'd go a bitey Pilsner...or something else light and bitter. Pilsner Urquell or Asahi Dry i'd say. The Greek beer Mythos isn't too bad either, it's a Pilsner.

I thought it was strange when it said on the can that it should be served extra cold! Toohey's old stout, will look out for it...haven't even tried the Coopers Stout yet, so might have to do that first!

Always wanted to try Pilsner Urquell after seeing some online reviews, so will definitely pick it up, thanks.

Tooheys Old isn't a stout, it's a dark ale. But quite a nice, readily available cheap beer. Definitely the pick of the Tooheys bunch, and a beer that tastes a little bit different to the rest of the Tooheys beers, which all seem to come out of the same kettle -except for extra dry which is diluted first.

If you want a stout, I would definitely try: Lion Stout (amazing chocolatey toffee flavours), Coopers best Extra (an all time classic stout does everything beautifully with all the flavours balanced) or Grand Ridge 'Hatlifter' Stout. For something cheaper, Abbotsford Invalid Stout of Southwark Old Stout are pretty good, although you can definitely taste the adjuncts, reducing their drinkability greatly. And Southwark Old Stout at 7.2% IIRC is a definite killer!

Woopsies. Oh well, i don't know much about Stout....it's quite a rare thing these days. Russian Imperial Stout is something i've heard a lot of good stories about...meant to be a flavour bomb!

Anyone like their wheat beer? I haven't really had too much of it....but i think it's quite good. Get's a tad old though, definitely can't see it as a session drink.

Had a Bluetongue lager not too long ago....terrible stuff. It tastes like sweet perfume.

I have some Mountain Goat and Red Angus in the fridge...i think i'll try them tomorrow.

Gage Roads New World Wheat - I bought a 6er of this for $14 the other day, it's 5.2% and would make a great session beer. It was very easy to drink and had quite a bit of flavour too.

Shops everywhere are getting good deals on Gage New World. I get 6 for 7.20 on my staff discount.....the cost price is less than light beer! :D:thumbsu: It;s about $1.10 a bottle, which is miraculously cheap. VB as a comparison has a cost price to independent shops of about $1.45 (before tax). The brewery might have had trouble selling it.

IMO, it's quite a nice beer, and IIRC its an American Wheat Ale which is rare in Aus according to the sales rep. Their IPA is very good, if you are a lover of IPAs, like me.

I'm currently drinking Holgate ESB...big biscuity malt backed up by a firm floral citric bitterness. Highly recommended.

Two more to try...

Matilda Bay Fat Yak - very different to the Little Creatures, but a pretty well flavoured Pale Ale, not too far removed from a Coopers Pale (this can only be good:thumbsu:).

Red Duck Belgian Strong Ale - what a f%^kin' creeper:eek::thumbsu:. Don't drink this one too quick, at 10.5 % (3 standard drinks in a 330ml) it'll catch up with you. Limited release, so find it, drink slowly, and then sit down. For any Melburnians attending the brewery showcase at Fed Square mid March, hope that Red Duck are there and have this one to sample. It'll cost you a few tokens, but well worth the try.

Had this at the Paddo last Saturday and didn't mind it. Was a bit drunk though, was about the 6th hour of the session and I think anything tastes good at that point. Will make sure to go back and check again now.
