I feel for Fischer here because while it was horrible drafting by us on a number of fronts, it's not Fischer's fault we drafted him.
I can't imagine it would feel good when things aren't working knowing that the club which drafted you also used the highest pick in years and was embarking on a full scale rebuild where this pick was a key piece of it.
Then things start to collapse off field with his family health issues and Covid
Hamish needs to take accountability for his huge drafting error but I wish Fischer all the best in his life beyond football
Yep ones that Haggis thought might be of great character eg Galluci and McAsey might not have had the mettle for AFLIn his first year he look pretty good, taking good marks and moving well. I think he could have made a pretty good go of it actually but his Dad, COVID and mental health issues meant he never really fired much after the first season.
Nothing wrong with having a crack, KP players are worth a crack if they look good, Filthy and other previous ones are examples
Unfortunately Haggis has had a few recent failures at the top with Fish, Gallucci and Jones. Gallucci was as accomplished as McHenry but got ditched and Jones is building so not a right off yet...
To be fair, I did watch some Durdin games on free to air tv while he was in the NM VFL team (keeping an eye on players who we could bring home), and no one would argue he showed more than McAsey has.
He was really exposed for having issues as a one-on-one tall defender at that age. Not sure that's massively changed, but at least he's physically more impactful now.
I think McAsey showed more at his underage year, but he's also had a bigger drop off.
I'm not sure anyone would take McAsey until he at least went away and showed that he had gotten his head right. I'm not convinced McAsey would play again in lower levels, anyway.
Literally Butts and Murray on our very own playing list have proven this.
It won't be, but this should be the final nail in the Hamish coffin.
He talked up Levers character a fair bit tooYep ones that Haggis thought might be of great character eg Galluci and McAsey might not have had the mettle for AFL
Hope they are reviewing this part of what they do at least as much as the talent ID
C4[2]Yo`DooR you mentioned early on Carlton weren’t getting McAsey and Sholl, anything you can share?Someone on reddit saying that carlton had genuine interest in him until they interviewed him. And they were concerned with the lack passion to further his career.
From what I’ve seen Mcasey is a much better talent but nowhere near reaching it and only time will tell if that’s what he wants to doDurdin didn’t have issues with one on one defending, it was arguably his strength.
He’s got small hands and is a terrible mark of the footy for a tall player, Regularly dropped soda’s and double grabs essentially everything.
He was an above average VFL player, as good as Ben McKay at times who he partnered with for plenty of footy at Werribee.
and Murray is not proven AFL standard yetI know the idea has been thrown around a few times on here, but is it time we give Himmelberg some exposure to playing as a KPD?
He's not cracking in to the forward line ahead of Thilthorpe.
Behind Butts and Murray we have no pure KPD so we need to get creative for this season.
personally doubt itCan be added to the list as a SSP now that McAsey is on the inactive list
Did it state due to mental health haven’t read all the reports yet?I just want to remind people that McAsey isn’t being delisted, but retiring due to mental illness. He isn’t seeking AFL opportunities elsewhere. There is a clear distinction between a dud player who can’t get an AFL gig and a potential AFL player who’s mind has been messed up due to life’s circumstances.
Why the need to hang his retirement and blame it all on Hamish/club? If McAsey retires due to concussion or severe physical condition, do we blame the club too?
Was he a bad pick? In hindsight, yes. Was he a dud from day 1? I think this is something that no one can know how much of the mental illness has impacted his footy development, only except McAsey himself. But for some on here to ignore the fact mental illness can affect peak performances is showing superficial awareness of what mental illness is all about.
I read the articles as though it was implied the retirement was from mental health issues. Nobody retires this young without a major physical and/or mental aspect. I think it’s a fair assumption even if no specifics are mentioned, particularly when there has been no reports of major physical injuries.Did it state due to mental health haven’t read all the reports yet?
Wording seems to be "walked away from the game" due to "lost passion to play and perform at the elite level"Did it state due to mental health haven’t read all the reports yet?
How I read itWording seems to be "walked away from the game" due to "lost passion to play and perform at the elite level"
That speaks to our player profiling needs to be turned upside downWording seems to be "walked away from the game" due to "lost passion to play and perform at the elite level"

Durdin was a shocker but as a stopper can do a role at a lower level and has a bit more athleticism
He was slow and lacked mobility from the first U23 trial game he played. That’s not mental health but physical.I just want to remind people that McAsey isn’t being delisted, but retiring due to mental illness. He isn’t seeking AFL opportunities elsewhere. Blowing 4 first round picks should be enough for Ogilvie to be sacked. So after a hundred pages of posters talking him up/talking him down and debating use of pick 6 on him, we can now definitely and irrefutably say -
McAsey is a high first round BUST, to add to our collection of first round busts.
In time, I feel Jones and McHenry will be added to this sad list, the former no footy smarts, the latter no real skill. Both will be pushed to SANFL as other players go past them.
I watched a fair bit of both at U18s and McAsey was a fair bit better than Durdin at that level with performances … actually no comparisonDurdin was as highly rated as McAsay as a kid, North was lauded for landing the “slider” of the draft when we got him.
He was a nice size, good mover, good tank, brave enough, decent enough leg speed and an excellent kick for a tall defender.
He just can’t mark the football, which is a real problem in modern football with the game built around intercept marks and possessions.
It’s why he’s been tried so much in the ruck over the years throughout all levels.
He definately wasn’t a “shocker”, some North fans would still have him.
He certainly was/is a good VFL player hence why he’s back in the AFL system.
Really went out on a limb there
Yep Murray was our best performed shutdown tall defender last seasonI am a Murray fan.
Still raw but I am pretty comfortable in his ability to perform at the level.
