Focus on younger players in Port's pre-season campaign

Well, that's pretty much it in the title ...

Matty Primus was on 10 news today after Port's training session for the less experienced players (full squad is back training on Monday) and his view was that the younger players would get a solid run in the pre-season. The senior players had a long season in 2007 so Port are looking to keep them fresh for the start of the 08 season.

That definitely makes sense. I'd love to see guys like Stewart and Farmer play some footy during the pre season comp, plus lots of minutes for Thomas, Lower, Gray, and maybe even one or 2 of the younger ruckman.

We really need to see what Giles can do at AFL level. He did alright vs. Geelong in London and has been steadily improving his SANFL form. I'm pretty sure he'll be overtaking Deluca this year. Plus, I think Lade would benefit from a rest early on.

Other than that, it will be a perfect time to see who will be replacing Wilbur. Lower and Thomas will get shots for sure but Williams and Farmer might get a few games too.

Then there's the Krak, Motlop jnr, Gray, Bentley, Thommo and more that I have forgotten.

I'd be hoping we'd line up something like this in our round 1 pre season game.

FF J Westhoff, Tredrea, Gray

HF Krakouer, C Cornes, Rodan

C Pettigrew, Thomson, Boak

HB Thomas, Chaplin, Stewart

FB Lower, Carlile, Thurstans

Ruck
Deluca
Salopek
K Cornes

INT Williams, Farmer, Giles, Surjan, D Motlop, Cockshell

EMERG Bentley,

******************************************************************

I've included Tredrea and C Cornes as i'm hoping they'll play in those positions throughout the year and it would be good if they can build some confidence, especially Tredders who we need up and firing early.

Pettigrew to be trialled on the wing.

S Burgoyne, P Burgoyne, Cassisi, Lade, Ebert, Brogan to be eased into the side in later pre season games.

M Westhoff, M Motlop and Lobbe not ready for AFL footy yet.

The future's looking bright

Ryan Williams to tear it up from a back pocket!

Carlile would want to get more time in the preseason, given he should be getting a regular gig in the H&A.

It will be interesting this year to see if Carlile is used at Full Back or in a Back Pocket with Thurstans at FB. I'm hoping he makes sufficient progress to be our number 1 full back choice but time will tell if hes up to standing the oppositions major goalkicker each week.
