Andrew Thompson was recruited by the Saints in the 1996 AFL Draft and played 221 games over a 10-year career. Noted for his work ethic and consistency, Thompson was voted St Kilda's 2000 Best & Fairest, was part of the Club's pre-season cup winning side of 2004 and is also a life member of the Saints.
Thompson retired in 2007 and within weeks had joined the Burke-Westaway 'Football First' ticket which was successful in its bid to challenge the incumbent Board.

Sorry he must of missed the 97 Grand Final.

No you are correct. He certainly played in the 97 Grand Final back in the number 29 jumper. He is the player Aussie Jones handballed to after his 5th bounce before giving it back to Aussie to kick one of the great grand final goals of all time. Also kicked the first goal of the prelim against North Melbourne the week before as I had a framed photo of his celebration in my bedroom until I moved out of home

200 games 97 Grand Final, certified accountant which could but l am not sure include auditing, Board member for at least 5 years, pretty sure his credentials would stand up to scrutiny.

you think someone like geelong would hire him to be their director of football?

I don't think he is at the Saints for employment, more likely passion.

thats nice, but this is a business, we want the best possible candidate, not nostalgia because he was once a champion player

do you think geelong would have him over someone like balme? i think not. likewise eade at the pies. lethal at brisbane.

I think he probably earns to much to be employed in those positions.
Lethal has gone back honourably which is really really nice.

so why do we have him as a football director in charge of reviewing the entire football dept and then to appoint the next coach?

money aside, i cant see geelong having him on even their short list

I should imagine as a board it was thought he was the board member best qualified to conduct a review.
Chris Pelchen is chairing the interview panel to put forward a recommendation to the board who will rubber stamp or reject their choice.
l don't know why you are saying Andrew Thompson is appointing the new coach.
If he had played 221 games for Geelong l would think he would be right in their mix.

I can see where you're coming from DF, but yeah, I think Thompson is a pretty impressive candidate. The other thing about him is that he was a mature age recruit (possibly rookie, I can't remember), to there's a little bit of the "I made it the hard way" with him.

I really admired him as a player.

Pretty sure he was drafted, don't think there were rookies back then.

Ok so apart from 200 games, a club B&F, grand final player, accountancy degree, strong work ethic, life member of the club, St Kilda board member for five years and passion for St Kilda, he doesn't have any qualifications, or experience to be on the coach selection committee?

He did more than crunch numbers on a calculator when he finished playing. He moved into a financial markets business.

He is there to ensure that the candidate buys into what the Saints are about and to report back to the board. He also played at the highest level so he has some idea.

A few people have it in for Thomo. I don't understand why. On the other hand - Burkey -who is no good as a leader - is on the board and yet escapes criticism. And I can tell you that from personal experience. Burkey is a ripping bloke but not very good in management / leadership roles.

tbarker I was joking, as I think he has done more than enough to be qualified for the coach selection committee. Should have added that damn smiley at the end of my post :)

Its great that he is so actively involved in the club. The clubs better for his presence. :thumbsu: (added the thumbs up just to be sure)

Sorry mate! My bad - replied to the wrong post. Been on a golf trip and still trying to get the brain working again.

I meant to respond to Defacto's post.

Must say the monty python sort of gave it away even without the smiley.

Now that Richardson has been appointed Senior Coach will there be anymore appointments in the football department I'm assuming that a replacement for Laidley still hasn't been made.

He is not doing it for the money as it is a voluntary position. He would be a director for the love of the saints.

Tony Micale joins Greg Doyle, Max Hudghton, Dean Laidley and Jaymie Graham in departing the club.

Also this:
It is believed two other football staffers, who are not happy with the workings within the club, are also ready to depart.

the tipping point in Watters' sacking was his hiring of former Richmond player Ashley Prescott, who worked as a development coach with Fremantle this year.

Prescott flew to Melbourne on the Thursday night and was at Seaford meeting prospective new workmates as Watters was being axed on the Friday.

He had been promised a multi-year role as a line coach to replace Dean Laidley, but head of football Chris Pelchen is understood to have immediately sent him home with no job.
