Coach Football department changes going forward

Not that I'm expecting the club to release their findings and recommendations in explicit detail. In a competitive environment like the AFL the finer details should mostly remain confidential. However when the club is asking us to re-commit* like they do every year at this time, then it seems like a reasonable mutual commitment for them to toss a few scraps our way to tell us what is going to change and why we should pony up once more.

I don't think there was even a review officially announced (correct me if wrong) so for all we know it might be like the 2021 GF ... not even worthy of a review. That's why I was wondering if anyone had any news.

* Or, as seems to be the case with a few of us, when they are just taking our money without asking and re-committing us anyway.

Are there examples of other clubs being more open with their internal review of 2022? What are the other clubs comma like?
Not asking for full openness.

As I said I’m not expecting them to spill the beans on exactly what we’ll change. Just a statement that we’re doing a thorough review would be somewhat reassuring even if it’s just an in-house one.

As you noted in the expectations thread it’s not an unreasonable assumption that we’ll just roll over again when the pressure is applied because that’s all we’ve seen for the last year and a GF.

So just some acknowledgment to fans of those shortcomings (which I don’t think they’ve made yet) and a commitment to address it would be nice.

Really should not be too hard and should to some extent happen each year.

We are doing a partial, full or whatever review starting.....

We have completed our review. This is what we are putting in place to support our football program.

Dogs used a lot of the extra funding to focus on re-hiring and getting in new staff for support roles
medico, physio etc
Any details available VD?

"Rehiring" just sounds like a pay rise, unless you mean getting back some of the same personnel that were shed when the pandemic hit footy.

Those new staff sound like sensible appointments (depending on what's in the "etc" bit!)

Sadly don't have much info

But mainly increasing the funding in the scouting/recruiting area, increasing the AFLW and NGA/FS programs through new support hires as well

I believe there are new VFL assistant coaches that the Dogs rate really highly (building a pathway type of design)

Surely aflw and NGA funding aren't in the AFL soft cap?

Yeah was gonna say this, sureeeeerly that’s not included in soft cap?

Considering the AFLW is a completely seperate competition plus You’d be better off understaffing your NGA academy considering the better you do with the academy players the less likely you are to draft them… it’d be a huge waste of resources

Extending pay rises to current Medico/physio staff would be a bold play considering how badly our conditioning & soft tissue injury rate has been over the last few years…

If that’s how we’ve used this money I’d be ropable

Maybe Dogs are focusing first on areas that are exempt from the soft cap first. But scouting and recruiting being 1 before the draft is a good step. Other clubs are still working on their coaching appointments so might just wait and see until preseason really starts up in December.

Yeah that’s all fine but my question was what sort of messaging have other clubs done that people think we should have? I don’t have anything as a point of reference.

Just to confirm for those wondering...

AFLW IS NOT included in the men's soft cap, there is a separate soft cap for the women's.
NGA IS included in the soft cap in regard to Indigenous Welfare Officers / Indigenous Player Development Managers.
What an ill conceived idea the NGAs were. Not only is there now no incentive to develop talent because you are unlikely to be able to draft the players you develop but money spent cones it if the soft cap.
Can't see many clubs putting resources into NGA programs anymore.

Preseason starting in a couple of weeks and only 1 change. This is becoming a joke. Cannot believe we are repeating the mistakes of 54 again. Revolving the club around 1 man and wasting a list that could have delivered a few flags.

Hope I am wrong and another announcement is imminent.

I am okay with limited information coming out of the club at this time of year.

I am hoping that the coach is taking a significant break with his family and having minimum contact with the football club atm. 6 - 8 weeks away.
The appointment of Brendan Lade is positive and a shuffle of responsibilities amongst the assistants can be formalised when training resumes.

We need a strong and experienced personality to replace Maple.

The findings from the review need to be made public but its really up to Bevo to acknowledge he got the game plan wrong last year and go into 2023 with a new vision and style.

We had a good trade period - our list is better (others may disagree) and removed a player that must have been toxic to the culture of the place.

Just need to make some astute choices at the draft and feed the members some information in the lead up to Xmas.

Heard from an ex employe at the club that its pretty shambles behind the scenes atm

So don't expect a report to come out and it all staying internal
Have heard something along that vein. Was told we're still looking for staff for the football department.

Report not being made public is a shame.

Did your mate go in to detail?

The Cafes had no coffee for a month? The clubs redevelopment issues? Or the clubs about to completely implode Bombers style?

Shambolic in what way?

As in it was a complete shambles? Or that it is still a complete shambles and we can expect more of the same next year?

The administration within the football department has been extremely poor for a number of years now.

I was told that several people we targeted for various departments have gone elsewhere.

A few key personal have quit suddenly (Jayden Shea being a main one) - these people are core to our group dynamic and how our football department runs.

And I do get the feeling after speaking with a current player and a staff member, that the report is digging fairly deep. Most of the players who have stayed in Aus over this off season have been interviewed, believe they're waiting for the rest to get back from overseas before completely wrapping it up.
