Mick frustrated me for years, particularly with his refusal to bring in a big bodied tap ruckman. When Bucks came on board we ended up getting what we needed in the ruck and won a flag.

Which funnily enough coincided with the coaching takeover plan.

Exactly my point. Bucks joins the football department and just about the first thing that the club does is trade for Darren Jolly.

Mick has been great and I'd love for him to mentor Bucks for the next three years, but if it is a choice between the two then I reckon Mick has had his time.

This thread should result in hilarious comedy if Collingwood start dropping off next year.

Thats fair, but 2 years ago others laughed because Mick had had a long tenure without a premiership.

My hope for the next 14 months?

We win this years premiership, Mick moves to a high paid job as the director of the football department, has some more family time, and replaces Sheehan on "On The Couch".

Buckley takes over as senior coach, we have a succesful year, with no off field problems or media driven coach / player contract speculation.

Honestly, I'm all for change, the Malthouse method will get stale, maybe Buckleys influence will freshen up the plan and keep us toward the top for another few years.

In heinsight, of course we would love to keep Mick on for stability, but it's not possible because a deal was done. There is a very good argument that we are a great side at the moment because the deal was done - players rise for the coach and the influence Buckley has had as an assistant coach.
Let Mick go now I say if he doesn't want to stay on as director of coaching.

I got it:D

Malthouse.

When the deal was announced two years I thought it was good. In fact, it turned out to be great. It delivered us a flag (IMHO) and has us in contention for another one. It was a slight change in strategy because of this deal that resulted in Jolly and Ball coming to the club.

That said, to enforce the deal now is insane IMHO. The deal made sense two years ago but it makes no sense now. If we were truly acting for the good of the club, Buckley would continue to wait. There is simply no justification for a switch other than this deal. Buckley may turn out to be great, but it's irrelevant. If the deal had not been done there is no way they would be forcing the change.

(and a side note, the box formation did NOT come from Buckley).

Malthouse.

The deal when done was the correct action to take. We were floundering around top 4 but always off the pace compared to Geelong/Saints/Hawks. Telling Mick he had 2 years left gave him the kick up the ass to finally get the 2 things we needed - a hard nosed inside midfielder (Ball) and a proper bigman ruckman (Jolly).

Having said that, my qualms at the time were we appointed Buckley without doing a proper review of all potential candidates. It's obvious by a couple leaving (including Rowdy) people were put out of joint by not even being considered for the role. Furthermore, I'm of the view having outside experience would be beneficial - Bucks knows Collingwood and only Collingwood. I think an apprenticeship elsewhere, just to see other systems, would be invaluable.

On to today. After 1 flag and in the box seat for a second, I don't think there's any harm in Eduardo coming out and saying situations change, and it would be foolish to continue with the original plan. I don't see the harm in giving Mick another year or 2 to see what he can do with this list. I do wonder whether Ed's ego in saying I'm not changing my mind is more of a factor then anything in this.

FWIW, I still think Buck's will make a good coach, and don't expect us to tumble down the ladder when he takes over, similar to the Cats this year.

Buckley played senior footballl for Port and Brisbane.

Buckley was coached by some of the greats

L.Matthews, J.Cahill, R.Walls, M.Malthouse and the not so great T.Shaw.

Buckley has experienced rabble clubs, Brisbane and Collingwood in the 90s, he has also experienced success with Port (and Collingwood).

Buckley then coached Vic Country in addition to the AIS role he took on, and has then done extensive media work, where he actually gave decent insight, before returning to an assistant role.

He is currently the opposition coach, so is well aware of strategies put in place to try and counter Collingwood's gameplan.

Buckley was offered the North role, but turned it down to have more experience before taking on the pies role.

Buckley is ready, MM is rising 60 and is finishing up, perfect transition.

I know Bucks played for Brisbane & Port, but that was a youngster - not really the same focus as learning your trade as a coach.

I think he is as well, just reckon some further outside coaching in another AFL club would have being beneficial.
