Do you think Hird should coach Essendon again?

I can't believe the question is being posed to even imply the possibility of head hunting him.

If Truck doesn't survive, the next head coach should be decided through a rigorous vetting and interview process. That's how it should have been done ten friggin' years ago, three years ago and from next week if Rutten is out.

Hird should apply like anyone else if he wants the job. If Hird is simply appointed, the whole place could be abducted by aliens and I'm not sure I'd give a shit.

If we got good it wouldn't, but I can appreciate your line of thinking, would be a few who walked i reckon.
It would speak more to the stupidity of the club constantly going back to what worked 20 years ago, constantly favouring club greats regardless of what value they actually bring. A club that refuses to learn from past mistakes and evolve.

Same old arrogant Essendon mentality. Really thought the saga would've knocked some sense into us but the fact that we still have old coots like Sheedy in a position of power suggests that maybe nothing is going to change and I'm getting sick of it.

Making the 8 3 times in 4 years is nothing?
Where’d you get three times from? 2011 was the only finals series Hird got Essendon to. Fair enough if you want to count our artificial missing of the 2013 finals I guess…

But Bomba was coach in 2014.

I want everyone who was at the club in 2012 gone so we can have a clean slate. I love Bear but that was the only silver lining of his retirement, one more 2012-er gone. Stevie Wonder can see the saga set us back years. Now there's talk of bringing back the guy who was senior coach during the whole thing?! Jesus take the wheel.

Oops forgot about Bomba. We did actually finish 7th in 2013 but we know what happened there.

On second thought - bring him back. Get a good team around him. Bring over Toby Greene since they're great mates. Watch the rest of the competition melt while we dominate, Miami-Lebron-face-mask style.

The sole proviso being he gets a weekly entrance at games through a smoke machine accompanied by his own theme music.

Hirdy's coaching didn't fail, what failed was the fact the club let in 2 pricks without checking their credentials.
Let’s not forget Hird’s previous relationship as a player with Shane Charters, who of course had links with Dank and Weapon. Whatever it takes, giving players needles etc etc. Had to take some responsibility. Put another coach like Hardwick or even Knights and those guys don’t get anywhere near the building

My vote will be, Alterbridge - metalingus

I'm with you, but only if there's a smoke machine and theme music.

Time for a new poll on here? Should James Hird Coach Essendon again?

I think there should be 3 options in the poll. I'd never say never, but now isn't the right time. Hird should spend a few years doing a proper apprenticeship with another club(s), and all the coaching accreditations. If he succeeds at that then anything's possible sometime in the future.

It's not my first choice by a long way but after witnessing the desparate attempt to get Clarkson I just can't see our current 'leadership' managing anything better. And I can see us getting stuck with the bulk of the current board and management at the club.

In terms of upside I reckon there are some elements he would immediatly bring this playing group needs. Another upside to the appointment would be that if it failed (and it would be on a short leash I reckon) it would definitely bring about the demise of the boys club. Overall though the bottom line is I actually believe Hird can coach

All that said I would FAR rather an external review and wholesale changes to the board and club management, followed by a thorough coaching recruitment process. But unfortunately Essendon is a bit like Australian politics - deeply rooted.

I think we can do better. I think we should stick with Rutten, but if we don't then the best thing to do is look at all the candidates and have a proper selection process. Maybe a more experienced head coach like Ross Lyon would be best, someone who's seen it all before and best able to cope with the ongoing messiness and external review.

I don't think it's the right time for Hird. Putting aside whether he could coach us well or not, there's the issue that there's too much politics behind the scenes, and the Hird appointment would only be feeding into that, rather than allowing us to clean up the backroom mess and move on from that.

I voted yes but of course there are caveats. I still think he could be a terrific coach, but he should go and work as an assistant for a substantial period first. If it's Essendon, it should only be because he was the best candidate we interviewed through a formalised process for professional integrity.

As I've said I agree with you - but I'm also beyond caring and have lost faith in the thought of any functional leadership at Essendon.

I want to enjoy football again. And as 80's and bush league as it would be I would back Hird in 100% to bring everyone together at the club and get these dickheads playing team first football in 2023. I know it's selfish but I'd enjoy that a lot. That aside - it's a struggle to imagine most other coaches flourishing at our organisation.

Ive argued against this sort if shit for years now and it's not a happy place. Hird back in would actually be Essendon being as Essendon as it could be - and stupider ideas have worked.
