Good question. Can only think Austin is wanting to try and nab pick 8 from GEE - as has been mooted by some other posters.

Pick 21 = 878 points
Pick 25 = 756 points
TOTAL = 1634 points

Pick 8 = 1551 points
Or Austin sees a couple of late smokeys end rd 1/early round 2 ??...

We would be adding our future first to that deal.

21+25 won’t get us near the top 10.

Take the picks to the draft imo.

Austin Cook Lloyd have been working hard to get a Top 10 pick. It's their focus. Geelong seem to be the most open to a trade

Anything could happen. Picks, Trades or even a Jack Bowes deal. I am sure they are open to all possibilities.

If ever Melbourne were going to have a swing at Harry... 1.4 mil cleared off their books and picks 6 and 11 now in their mitts. Interested to hear what they do with it
Should Melbourne offer their picks 6 & 11 for Harry, I'd throw in F1 in a heart beat, we'd be creating plenty of space in our SC and bringing in quality 3 quality youngsters.
Disagree. We wanted his salary off the books and we did well out of it to get anything. Plenty of examples of sides taking nothing to get salary out.
Yup, you’re spot on and same issue with Paddy Dow we need to creat space & flexibility, it will continue next trade period too.

What was his response
Simply said we would like to if we could, by no means an iron clad promise! On balance this trade works for us and our strategy of building out depth. If we could somehow land Hollands for a future 3rd plus some pick swaps it would be a big win.

Couldn’t we play hardball & just got pick 25?
If that was the offer on the table we wouldn’t have done this deal would we?

The fact is a fringe player we drafted 8 years ago in the back end of the 2nd round is now leaving for the equivalent of a pick in the back end of the 2nd round.

It’s a fair deal. It’s about what he was worth. Good luck to fish at nth

No arguments. No fan of Fisher's.

Just a less than stellar effort...on the surface...to have the upper hand in negotiations and still give up the best asset.

I’m not pumped about the deal nor am I unhappy, think it was ok.

But let’s face it, Fish was no longer wanted at the club and if he did stay, he’d be in the VFL for the majority of the year. This dilutes his value somewhat.

If we end up taking those picks to the draft and we get 2 shots for a 4 spot downgrade, that’s not bad.

I've reconciled that we will never "win" a trade with Austin as the list boss but i am confident in his talent i.d with the picks we do get back.

So hoping we get a future 3rd for Dow and Suns accept it

I think to get pick 8 we will need to come up with 1000 extra points in picks

Could happen, but I see it as unlikely

Demons just gave up an extra 1000 points for GC pick

Plus we need a reasonable pick for Hollands

Can't see us chasing pick 8 now, nor would we have the pick capital of other clubs

And, think Cats want decent picks for next year
I quite like the trade and I think it represents the value we generally see in trade period. I have been a Fisher fan but I can’t begrudge him for wanting a 5 year deal, especially with how the coach sees him in the pecking order, I wish him all the best.

As for your point on pick 8. Yeah, this trade doesn’t exactly point to a team trying to trade up for a top 10 pick.

Quick note, we now have the last pick of the first round, which may have some value on draft night in terms of jockeying for certain players

I see Austin as the type of List Manager that is about relationships with other clubs and improving our list over time, not in one hit. Sometimes you take a little less to win later and sometimes it's one little step back to go forward on another deal. He did an awesome job last year and I expect the same this year. Bigger picture

That's true, unfortunately they are doing the draft in one night I believe

Wish they left it like last year
Sure it’s still over 2 days/nights.
Though commentary is around low amount of overall picks.

Very unsure on what I feel in regards to the fisher trade.

The original offer was pick 42.

We now trade

Fisher and 17 for 21 and 25

Whilst 25 is on the high side for fisher a pick around 30 would have been fair.

Melb are paying a 1st and two picks in the 20s to move up 3 spots and then we allow North to jump up 4 spots and throw in Fisher for our pick in the 20s.

I feel Austin leaves a lot of currency on the table

Not sure if true, but apparently Cats are looking for extra future picks, so someone like the Dockers makes sense as the have Ports future 1st as well as their own

Even North makes sense given they have pick 10 (not sure who that's tied too)

I don't think most of the list managers (except maybe Dodoro and SOS) think in terms of 'win' or 'lose' in a trade.

It's more about 'what does our club need and what do we need to do to get it' ?

Couldn’t we play hardball & just got pick 25?
In isolation, I guess this makes sense. However, I trust Austin as he's playing the long game.
Will GC want pick 25 in return for E. Hollands, + a potential later pick coming back Blues way?
This is proof the points system is nonsense. Just look at the trade the Dees just did for pick 11 to see how far away 21+25 is from being worth pick 8.
I get what you're both saying. Have no idea why Melbourne did what they did, just to move up 3 spots. Desperate for a draftee they didn't think would fall to their pick??

Re. points, they exist to measure value of draftees. Plus, I suppose they're now a more accurate tool/yardstick for rating academy and F/S selections.
This yr NM hold multiple 1st rnd picks (5), Melb (2), Crows (2), GWS (2). I'm presuming Austin figured pick 17 wasn't much different to pick 21.

Given Austin's track record in later rounds, I'm trusting him to find some gems with pick 21 & 25. Or maybe he has plans to bundle them with a F1, or F2, for something bigger? We'll know in 48 hrs, what Austin & co's master plan was. Hopefully :)
