One thing which stood out was the penetration and distance that Richmond players could kick. It was the difference in the end. Short bangs 3 goals from 55-60. Our bigger players sprayed them in the 1st searching for distance, and Switta and Serong couldn't make it from 45m.

Little guys like Rioli, Short, Bolton have incredibly long kicks. Even Prestia (but not highly skilled). Our smalls who can't kick far are locked into the side (except Henry), so it will always be an issue that we have to work around.

Would like to get the ball in Clark's hands more. Can see the difference it makes when he got that one to Treacy who marked and goaled.

We got a bunch of blokes who should be getting dropped after this game. How any of them didn't line that campaigner up, even once, is beyond me.
Exactly maybe because the game was tight everyone was too scared to reverse the FK.

Fyfe checked on Aish but wtf was everyone to go and line up manzal over the hit.

People wonder why we're poor in the wet, or when the heat goes up. Many reasons, but the key one is some of our outside players lack the appetite for the contest. Sure, you need to maintain your shape when you're a winger, etc, but when the ball is ping-ponging around along the ground, there are times you just need to take charge. Many of our players don't.

The worst example I can think of tonight was in (maybe) the 2nd quarter. It was a loose ball that came between Freddy and Serong, but was closer to the former. Freddy just stood there and watched. Serong realised Freddy wasn't going in, and went to retrieve the ball himself, but by the time this decision was made, Richmond brought the heat and what would have been an easy ball became a ball up. Had Freddy taken the first possession and risked contact to feed it to Serong, maybe we'd have won a clean possession.

This approach to footy is fine when it's a dry day, in home and away. It absolutely will not stand up in finals. Sometimes you have to go when it's your turn. Some of our players don't do that.

I’m happy to take some positives out of that one. Our young talent is huge, and we’re too inexperienced to win anything major this year.

I thought we’d have to go 2-1 vs Rich/GWS/Ess to stay in touch with finals and we’ve lost the first, so we’d need to get that winning touch back quickly but all is not lost.

Unless we play in more wet weather though, because we still cannot coach/play those conditions at all.

I’d drop ODriscoll for Worner.

Drizzy you need a right foot pal.

OMeara back in for Henry…not that he did much wrong but we need Jaeger

Emmett for Freddy.
If you can’t kick goals you must be able to do more than run around like a headless chook. His lack of tackling ability is a concern.

Sturt can stay in Sonny in the oark
Erasmus in as sub

Dogga played another immense game overall, 23 possessions, 4 marks, 4 tackles and 33 hitouts is better than what Mr All Australian ruck in waiting did against Scott Lycett on Friday. As someone said in the game thread it robs us of everything else he does though. Rucking all match against someone like Nankervis just tired him. The same way anyone rucking against Swaggy gets fatigued.

As someone else said (Snuff maybe?), Sum of the parts is greater than each on their own.

Amiss, Dogga, Jonnno, AB, Serong, Aish, Young, Clark and JT never stopped trying.

Fyfe and Sonny showed the veteran leadership and magic.

Does the loss hurt? Yes it does. I hate narrow losses. Especially if its at home. Those are the types of close losses that costs finals.

We played good on some parts of the game.

Richmond had 5 players in their best 23 that come from WA. Even one comes from peel thunder too.

Saying that. I agree with some on here. We lost in the selection table

But more importantly Freomaniac how much did you WIN!?

Hughes' goal was not a goal imo. Looked like it clearly hit the post to me.

I'm surprised the video ump didn't have the balls to call it himself. Probably used the soft call from the on-field ump to spare himself getting involved in any controversy.

Johnson and Amiss keep improving.
Walters and fyfe are still good players.
Richmond are a good side and we had opportunities to win that.

Darcy plays and we win.

Jackson’s strength is part time ruck as his impact is bigger. Plus we had nothing down the line multiple times again.

If JLo has selection integrity, he should drop NOD, but given Aish is probably out then he might stay in.

Imo - JOM Walters & Erasmus in for Aish Sturt (move to sub) & Henry. Darcy plays if fit over Raz, who moves to sub

Banfield has enough tickets this year for another crack. Never thought I’d say that.

I thought the same, but it was a cracking bit of play from Hughes nonetheless.

Can we also use this game as a yardstick for judging our small/medium forwards please. I think it is really obvious that they all struggle when the rest of the team is off.
Despite our young talent there is only a handful of players you can trust on that team. To give 8/10 even at their worst.
We need more of those guys to elevate to never having a bad game.

You're bang on. One word to explain it. Experience.
