The midfield is great it's the coach that is the problem

The midfield is capable of top 8 but isn’t a premiership midfield. Undersized, too same same, lacks any point of difference etc

I don't understand why they were so hyped up this pre-season. They shit the bed at the end of last year, and they have won one final in a decade.

Individually they have a pretty solid list, but they have shown nothing to me that suggests they should be considered premiership contenders.

They are in that pack with Carlton, Bulldogs, and Adelaide for me. Top 8 contenders but not good enough to be in top echelon.

Whilst I don't necessarily disagree, many have said the same over the years about Sydney and Brisbane.

Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage, Ashcroft, Ashcroft, Rayner, Bailey, Berry has quite a bit of flexibility. Bailey and Rayner a nice POD.

You need a prime fyfe or something. Maybe he can turn back the clock.

Our midfield isn't undersized. That's a rubbish call.

Young is 189
Johnson is 192
NoD (new rotation) is 188
Fyfe (probably still in our plans even if he shouldn't be) is 190
And if Darcy (a massive bloke himself) is ever fit, Jackson probably takes a few CBAs as a mid at 199

If you want to take a crack at the midfield, you can do it on speed (Bolton helps) or ball use (average outside of Young) but size is just wrong.

I think the size thing is often a proxy for physicality, no? Young is more finesse and speed (sick player), no clue if Johnson can play, at this stage NoD is more outside.

Fyfe obviously had size and power in his prime but is a way off there. I'd have a similar criticism re Sydney's midfield absent Heeney, and I just think they are too top heavy. Their second string/taggers are medium sized and not super athletic.

Bolton back will help Freo a lot.

Intent matters a lot as well, JHF has the frame to be that inside brute but doesn't commit to the defensive work required to round out his game. Dunkley was basically a one-person fix to our midfield and does the defensive work of 2/3 players in there.

I used prime Fyfe as the example because he was a big unit, which you have none of anymore. Heave ho.
