Coach Fremantle: where to now after Lyon?

Yet this so called "not a good coach" Beat Geelong in the 2012 Elim final and that 2013 QF. He isn't bad, you just hate him.

Ross Lyon should go to GWS srs. He’s great at turning talented but underperforming lists into defensive powerhouses who dominate for a couple of years before collapsing into the absys and never recovering.

Might jag them a flag and Freo can actually rebuild. Lyon has never shown any ability to blood younger players or build a list.

Ok Lets look at your post.... He could of won 2 flags at the saints and 1, possibly 2 at freo.

Lyon hasn't shown Any Ability to Blood younger players? I have seen some stupid posts on my time on Big Footy, but that statement is Laughable. Freo have blooded 8 afl players. He has given 8 AFL players a debut game: Cerra, Crowden, Brayshaw, Banfield, Duman, Scott jones, Stefan Giro and Sam Switkowski.

Last year in 2017 it was 7 players. Griffin Logue, Sean Darcy, Brennan Cox, Ryan Nyhuis, Luke Ryan, Harley Balic, Josh Deluca.

Yeah Ross Lyon doesn't play youth.

Lyon is hard to judge. Most of his fame came from St Kilda, but the St Kilda team that he inherited in 2007 was one of the best lists this century. He did well with them, but many other coaches might have done well too and gone all the way.

At the time I thought his defensive game plans stifled individual talent a bit, while Bomber Thompson's creative fast paced style celebrated it.

Totally agree. His tactics are a stain on the game and his personality (if you could call it that) is awful. Freo need to get shot asap.

This right here sums up why Freo are going nowhere......To celebrate finals wins that ultimately lead to nothing is a tad sad tbh.....I can assure you my club doesn't celebrate it's finals wins in 08 & ditto for the hawks in 2012!.... Anyway on topic, Lyon's biggest problem IMO is his inability to move with the trends, his style of play is outdated & it also caps his players ability to just take the game on & play.

His tactics worked incredibly well for his tenure at St Kilda and the early part of his career at Fremantle. It’s a similar way Paul Roos coached Sydney yet you don’t see anyone knocking him for what he achieved there, whereas WC could’ve been back to back premiers and Roos just a defensive coach that stifled talent like Lyon.

It’s pretty typical of BF to hit a bloke in the back of the head when he isn’t looking, yet be the first to suck up when he seems to be a popular and likeable figure who is a success.

Lyon is shit, full stop. He would have no chance trying to coach and manage the great Hawthorn and Geelong players from the last 10 years - they'd have played in spite of him.

He has done everything but win 3 flags so he can coach. But he has a style and he certainly works better with mature players that will perform a role. He has never shown any skill at building his own list and developing talent and Freo look to be in a not too different situation than Saints were when he left - a dirth of prime age talent.

He isn’t accepting of mediocrity? He is stating that if he was such a poor performing coach he wouldn’t have those runs on the board of being able to actually win finals.

My only comment on the above is what happened in 2007 that tempered your enthusiasm as you sit through the 2008 season.

Fair to say if we had of won 2013, not many dockers supporters would be going round saying that we beat you in Melbourne/ Geelong/ wherever whenever in the finals series.

Geel/hawk/richmond have a deserved swaggee atm because they won the flag.

It’s the youth he didn’t play when Freo were more competitive.
He did the same at St Kilda.
Didn’t play youth, drove both lists into the ground til they virtually fell of the cliff.

Every punter and his dog saw this coming a mile away with Freo yet no one wanted to accept it.

It’s also worth mentioning that Freo and the saints lacked depth in their squads so when injuries wreaked havoc (and they did at key moments in finals with Freo) they had little cover in the bench and in the WAFL

He’s playing youth now basically because he has to, public pressure and to fit the narrative of a team rebuild.

The club and Ross have been terrible with their list management.

When someone says Ross doesn’t play youth - they’re spot on. It’s his inability to do this from previous years which has your club in the current crisis it is

Hayden Ballantynes re-signing is symbolic of everything wrong with Freo and their dismal list management methodology.
