Coach Fremantle: where to now after Lyon?

Keep drinking the Kool Aid...

I want Ross gone but those Geelong teams are seen as great teams and Freo beat them twice in the finals in two years.

At the MCG and at Kardinya Park.

During the Hawthorn threepeat we certainly got.the closest on GF day and in that game Freo kicked 2.9 in the first quarter and had the last EIGHT shots on goal for 2.4 and we lost by a grand total of 15 points. We were more than a chance against one of the greatest teams of the modern era.

We choked, the Hawks deserved to win but the revisionist history about that Freo team is just crap. It was a very good team and the Hawks were our kryponite.

Ross has achieved a fair amount at Freo and no matter how crap we played yesterday you can't big footy it away. Yeah, yeah but we didn't win a flag and we have an empty trophy cabinet and people think our song sucks and....

Ross does need to go asap right now though.

Get a girlfriend.
Haha, you're right - not so much in a gf sense but better things to do than keep buying into this thread.

It is an intriguing situation however. I still don't get how you Freo fans continually accept such dismal performances.

If it was WC, he would have been shipped off a long time ago. Then again WC wouldn't foolishly sign a coach for an unprecedented 5 years.

I have always been of the view all people who get a gig as a senior AFL coach can coach. Some mich better than others but ultimately it comes down to your list and who is on it. Ross has been there long enough but if the board are backing him in for a few more years then they think he is the right man. Make no mistake that with their existing group of players a new coach won’t have them winning more, they may not get belted like yesterday’s game but it would be dreaming to think they would be much better placed. Just an average list of players.

Id put that comment a bit differently

Ross Lyon inherited two of the best CHF in the history of our game. He built a game plan around them. Now they are both gone from his life and we are beginning to learn just how tough football is when you dont have Matthew Pavlich or Nick Riewoldt to carry you

Literally nothing to do with what I said..

Plus Ross didn’t base his style around those 2 guys. But whatevs

Can’t say he hasn’t played youth because he has but he did only start playing them after intense criticism from external sources and of course because of an extremely long injury list. The good news for the dockers is they’ve been good and are competitive unlike some others in the side. Hopefully they can keep them otherwise you can see them becoming the next Gold Coast and players wanting out.

I am confused at the resigning of Ballantyne and even to a certain extent contract talks with Sandilands as injuries are now a major issue.

I also don’t think the drafting of Bennell, Matera, wilson, kersten, McCarthy has helped at all. Might of got the boys to come home but they really haven’t delivered. Interestingly De Boer who was delisted by Freo has gone on to be a valued pick up for the Giants.

I don’t know what it is that keeps Lyon protected and the constant references to him being this elite coach because I just can’t see it. Yes he may be great at teaching young kids but it just seems he can’t bring that youth and the core that has the experience that’s on the field and tie them together and play good quality football consistently. Maybe he needs a game day coach

FWIW I think yesterday was more about how badly the cats were smarting from the criticisms levelled at them this week than Freo and let’s face it they were phenomenal with the performance in front of goals yesterday - no team was stopping that

Wilson has been a great get.
The rest I’d agree, though McCarthy was played out of position as main key forward for almost 2 years.

As for Ballantyne and Sandilands, we don’t have the picks to replace them all this year. Already gone are
- Danyle Pearce
- Lee Spurr
- Michael Johnson
Then there will be a few delists of spuds.
We have a 1st round then nothing until the 4th. Then rookie picks.
So by signing Ballantyne as depth (as long as he’s depth only) and Sandilands to help Darcy progress is fine. Not gonna go far if we turn over 10 guys this year without the picks to replace.

I find this interesting. 1st I think you’re right, we can absolutely belt lower ranked sides BUT our overall record against top sides and bottom sides over a long period of time in terms of W-L is very even.
We lose to ordinary sides more than most but belt them other times.

Anyway on topic, Lyon should be sacked. If you’re going to suck at least play a good style of footy.
For Freo fans, why even bother watching?

Perhaps i feel you have a history because of this game, the Melbourne game and you belted us by a similar margin (they really stick out).

Do agree though, you have a silly knack of losing to lower teams, has certainly hurt you guys.

Every team got to play GC and GWS. Your post makes no sense.

I don't really know why people rate Ross as a coach. Plays boring defensive football that stifles players talent.

Wont ever win a premiership and I love that because the bloke seems like an arrogant flog.
Sorry but you can hate his style all you like but got them within a couple of goals of 3 flags. A bounce of a ball or the tow poke not working out could have been the difference. Those factors of a game arent the result of him being a bad coach.

He clearly knows how to coach.

In the midst of this onfield carnage is the fact their list manager walked out of the club this week. He was apparantly aghast at being rolled by Lyon over contract extensions given to Ballantine and Sandilands. They are a shambles from top to bottom, on and offield.

No we wouldn't, in 2008 we lost by a similar margin to Geelong at home, Worsfold wasn't sacked and we had other terrible performances, but it was the first of our 3 year rebuild that culminated in us "winning" our first wooden spoon.

A year after, we reached the prelim in 2011.
However, we took another dive down the latter and Worsfold was sacked.

I think Freo will take a similar approach, stick with their coach through the rebuild, give it 3 years to see what he's created, if it's not looking good, make a change.

5th round, our 4th round was part of the Crozier trade last year.

You dont have to believe me but ask yourself why else would the list manager walk in such circumstances? Apparently he also clashed with Lyon after Lyon effectively forced Johnsons retirement. Lyon seems to BE the Dockers, surrounded by yes men unable to reign in the Boss. It wont and isnt going to end well for you supporters.

I don’t believe you at all.

Lloyd bailed cause he got a better job at Carlton. Why would he stay? Freo aren’t gonna you him make any list changes when he works at Carlton next season.

Apologies it appears everything is fine then. And I sincerely hope Freo keep faith in Lyon for a long, long time. If anyone can get Freo to where it deserves to be its him.

What a bunch of crap.

I can name 50 players in the WAFL id take ahead of Ballantyne. Just pick one of them up in the PSD. In what planet would Haiden Schloithe for example not be more worthwhile then Ballantyne

Dont pretend. This is purely a boys club keeping the boys club together at the expense of the Fremantle football club

If Freo took the attitude of phasing out the hasbeens for some mature aged WAFL players, Tim Kelly and Liam Ryan would be at your club now and not Danyle Pearce and Hayden Ballantyne.

Freo supporters scoffed at Saints supporters when we said Ross will run their list into the ground like he did at St Kilda with his defensive flooding gameplan.

I bet they aren't scoffing at us now, the Freo players look burnt out from following his gameplan like our players did at the end of Lyon's tenure at St Kilda.

Wouldn't surprise me if Ross jumped ship to somewhere like Carlton, GWS or Gold Coast in the next year or so and he'd be doing Freo a favour if he did.
