I heard some suggestion that Walters did his injury before the game and was testing it out after the warm up.

Makes sense. I thought it must have been a pre-existing injury by the way he went off as if he knew what he had done. People normally go off like that for a hamstring, not a knee.

Unfortunately/fortunately I couldn't watch the game. It seems we lost this at selection.
Nice to hear the kids played well though.

Tempted to say Taberner in, but that always sets up for disappointment

We lost Lloyd and Kirk and now have Rock. He is hardly of their calibre.

This has definitely been one of my issues with the club
We simply don't seem to have recruited well outside of hale(who the jury's probably still out at this stage too) since we lost those 2
I can kinda understand it's not easy tho. I posted in another thread how hard it would be to attract quality assistants over here.
I mean we Ve seen how difficult it is with players but it's twice as hard with assistant coaches.
For one they've generally got young established families and they're not cheap or very practical to move in any way.
So you have to offer substantial coin but considering the football department tax or soft cap directly targets this (and has more impact on middle clubs like freo) it makes it difficult .

And secondly most line coaches have higher ambitions so it's better career wise to be where you ll get most noticed and most jobs are (vic)

Remember Kirk only came over here to work with Ross while slloyd was virtually another "no name" before he came here

Clarkos gets some high praise and rightfully so but he's had some pretty decent assistants along the journey.
I hope with the direction our club is heading (off field) they can identify some good up and coming coaches ,keen for a chance ala hale to assist Ross over this rebuild

Putting his hand up for selection is what he's paid to do.

Selecting a team that can win a game is what the coaches are paid to do.

So if they're continuing to select someone they know is injured it's 100% on the coaches.

Wouldn't say quite 100%, but yeah, basically coaches repeatedly putting a player who can't perform for injury is such a stupid thing to do. It's not only a Ross thing either, but lots do it. It is a bit of an old school thing though, and Ross does have a bit of old school about him which doesn't fill me with confidence it will change soon.

I agree they need to take some of the blame of course but that's on the proviso he is indeed playing injured.
Players have often said ,particularly later into the season there'svery few games where most aren't going in quite 100% fit.

I guess it comes down to how "restricting" his injury is. If he knows it's affecting him too much then yeah he should put his hand up for a rest.
I highly doubt they deliberately then tell him nah you ll be good to go(it's not like we're playing for finals or anything) plus there is that little thing of duty of care

Yes bang on. As I've been at training and watching on since Ross Lyon's inception the line and skills coaches have changed and some might say for the worst.

He simply can't do it all by himself. Training has changed to some degree and I don't think coaches like Rock have a grasp on AFL standards.

Clarkson has definitely had some great assistants work under him.

He's a professional footballer, he doesn't get to "put his hand up for a rest"

He plays when he's told to play

We did what we always do and bomb the ball long and almost never put it to advantage. We fell over at important contests and as a result the Hawks just walked it in with little to no pressure. It was so frustrating to watch.

We need to practice the basics. We need to practice skills. We need to practice goal kicking. We need to fix how we take the ball inside 50. We need to fix how we pressure and tackle the ball carrier instead of being sucked in and them getting an easy clearance with a handball over the top.

We won't fix anything this season and the rest of it will suck.

Scored a place at the Presidents Dinner today before the game
The player speaker was Tommy Sheridan who stated that after last weeks game they specifically did skills training in preparation for today's
All I can say after that performance then is heaven help us when we dont do skills training

Oh well, gives Neale the chance to bradbury another Doig and Freo BigFooty will continue to think he's a brilliant , A grader. Seriously though, his up and unders, bombs into the forward 50 and hospital handpasses of late have been spectacular.

Bit harsh on Neale ,been one of our better contributors this year, that said I also agree he's,as a senior player, certainly escaped some warranted criticism especially as you noted with his disposal and decision making at times. Its been rather ordinary

I spent All Day at AVCON in Adelaide. Some Anime and Video game convention. Had fun day too. Went to the casino to watch the final quarter of the game. Glad I didn't watch the whole game to be honest. Freo were horrible in the final quarter.

The result was expected. Kersten was our best forward with 2 goals and 2 behinds

Here's hoping we get this rebuild right, just tank like ****, get a swathe of first round picks and continue our upward trajectory at the trade table. Sadly though, the best list in the world will still dish up what they're coached to dish up.

Oh any one got the Age group of our 22 vs the Hawks?

IMG_1532.JPG

Our 4 over 150: MJ, Mundy, SHill, Suban

Hawks 7 over 150: Shiels, Bruest, Hodge, Roughead, Smith, Burgoyne, McEvoy

We really didn't get much from ours. How good is it when Sean Darcy (5 games) halves or probably beats McEvoy (163 games) in the ruck. Kid is playing beyond his years!

Inefficient forward line, lack of run, poor disposal and getting countered quicker than we can regroup our defense is killing us.

No true centre half forward means we got to run the ball in and not bomb it. Kept getting picked off by Gunston of all people. Brian Lake as a boundary rider is a little bit more irony.

Most dysfunctional forward line in the comp. 4 goals down at half time is the nail in our coffin all too often.

Turned off the match just before the siren.

Can anyone explain B. Hill's tears? Does it really look like a 'why did I join this team?' scenario? Or did he just look upset with his own performance?

Through some distant neutral contacts I had heard consistently throughout his tenure at the Hawks that he was desperately homesick, and would have come home after even the first flag in 2013.

Did anyone notice early in the game a freo player stood next to a hawk man on the mark to block and the umpire told him to clear out, but the Hawks did it the entire game without a peep from the umpires? Unbelievable rubbish. Also a late free was awarded to freo for high contact and the mark was placed where they were which was 15 meters back from the infringement, then the hawthorn player cane over the mark another two meters at least and no 50. Terrible inept umpiring last night, also that free on Darcy against McEvoy who ran under the ball in the ruck contest omg! Makes me consider giving up on afl sometimes.
