Agreed, the loss of genuine Port blokes who were poached by other sanfl clubs and played in multiple premiership teams for them, eg Beard, Kirkwood (plus two magarey medals), and Reynolds (who is still playing) is an absolute indictment on the BS rules the club signed off on.

The omission of Bruggemann for a grand final was partly self inflicted and partly the BS sanfl rules, if he had played I believe the Maggies would have won the flag that year.

We probably would have won another if the ex South Adelaide forward ( whose name doesn't appear to be on RossFC's list) didn't go to water and miss everything from about 30 metres out very late in that game, but if as suggested he was told before playing in a grand final he was going to be delisted (which obviously could have had a detrimental effect on his game), and even if it didn't the poor timing of it would have to be right up there with the man management c*** ups of the millenium!
That Bruggemann dropping still pisses me off. All for a not even fit Butcher who did nothing (as usual). Having Harvey in ruck against Baulderstone who at the time was probably the best ruck in the entire comp was embarrassing to watch.

Oddly, had we had the 17 AFL player cap that year, we wouldve shit it in. Summo, Slattery, Bruggemann, Biemans and probably Johansen wouldve played. A more placed team plus we'd actually have a ruckman!

I forgot Krauker played in that as an SANFL player, so maybe not Johansen.

My memory of the Bruggemann situation was that we had to omit someone due to a very late draft pick small defender ( Russell?), who had missed most of the season with a leg injury and hadn't been worth a crumpet in any of the few games he had played decided to declare himself fit for the GF, so we were forced to select him and leave out a sanfl listed player, and it was Bruggemann who drew the short straw.

Bruggemann never played for Port again and the bloke who replaced him was delisted not long after the GF, so it was just another lose/lose decision by the club, but we should be getting used to that by now.

I think Russel played from round 18 onwards. But Butcher was the one who came back for the GF.

Saddest part is I heard from a Mallala connection of Gus's that he absolutely loved his time at Port, didn't want to leave and didn't anywhere near as much enjoyment out of his time at Sturt.

I understand the regulations but you should be able to hold onto heart and soul blokes like that

what are the new rules on top up players? Are we able to delist Jackson or Scully and include them in our SANFL top up list?
I believe with Jackson being 21, we can sign him outright as one of the 4 mature aged SANFL players, but you also have to pay out his 100k AFL contract for 2025.

With Scully being 19, he can be delisted, then sign for West Adelaide, then go on loan to us as one of the 6 18-20 year old loan players. We then pay Westies $2500 to loan him for the year.

Would you have a crack at bringing Matt Taberner in as a sanfl top up player to provide a leadership role for our young forwards?

Richo talked a bit about the Magpies and the SANFL. Talked about getting access to better standard of SANFL players to be more competitive and so our kids play with decent standard players when we have a lot injuries to the AFL list.

Koch said he wouldn't talk about the SANFL because he didn't want to get in trouble again.

Basically said that we will be in the SANFL until our licence period ends at end of 2028 season.

Richo didn't say it - but I reckon the AFL reserves comp probably wont be happening until next decade.

The 2023-27 CBA giving the players a lot more money as well as the AFLW players getting decent base salaries, has meant the AFL will spend most of the big $$$ increase from the new TV/media deal in 2025, 2026 and 2027 when the CBA finishes, and they will be spending money on Tassie from 2026 and 2027 with decent level of development funds and then in 2028 they have to start giving the Tassie side an annual distribution, which wont be as much as the GC and GWS, but still will probably be in the top third of club distributions.

There also is better bang for bucks for the AFL into pouring money into AFLW and giving club increased distribution and capital grants to improve the quality of their W programs home grounds and pay for lighting good enough for broadcasting games on TV than spending money on an AFL Reserves comp, especially when most of the teams are already in the VFL.

Unpopular and yes I've been a yea lets leave the SANFL enthusiast, but I'm keen to see how it goes with the recent changes to the players we can bring in etc. for the SANFL.
The VFL in it's current state seems a bit of a shemozzle tbh which is another factor.

Can someone post our SANFL player list please.
