Rumour Future of the club (Bevo, board, assistant coaches, football department)

Whoever has been working with the GWS forward line has done a great job. Hogan couldn’t hit a barn door from three yards a couple of years ago now he looks incredible. They all look fit, they move well and always seem to have space (or at least aren’t regularly on top of each other like our mob often are).

I still hold out hope that we have potentially one of the most talented forward lines in the comp, they’re just being poorly coached. Hopefully that gets addressed in the offseason regardless of who’s the head coach.

Our forward line has been disfunctional for years. Before Spangler.
Our forwards are told to press up when we don't have the ball. Then if we win the ball back they're out of position.
Our defenders are told to press up when we have the ball. Then if we lose possession, they're out of position.
Same for the mids.
We play an extra on the ball, so when we kick it forward, the opposition usually have a spare.
If we don't absolutely dominate with possession our plan completely falls down.
Bevo has changed the personnel and is trying to play more direct ( only took 7 years) but the basic flaws with our game plan still remain.
It's the same plan since 2015. Other teams have moved on. Bevo & the Bevo defenders haven't.

Spang needs to be moved into the original role we recruited him for (development) and we need to get a very well established and seasoned forward line coach.
His big cash pocket stopped that from happening

Alas, we'll never know whether Jordan Sweet could have been our senior ruckman. It would have been good to find out.
True though he is stuck in the ressies still?

Nothing and I highly doubt anything will happen until much later in the year.

If we don’t make the 8, he’ll be out, that I have heard from multiple people.
I hope you're right. Last night's game was very winnable and we blew it as usual :(

We still haven’t solved the issue where our defenders are outnumbered on the break.

Isn’t it supposed to be the opposite?

So if we slide into the 8 by the thinnest of margins (highly likely given some of the awful crap other teams have dished up so far this year) he will stay?

Probably very circumstantial- internally club reckons we should be well entrenched in the 8 without having to “slide in” - no idea what will play out if we just skim in and lose in the first elimination. Sadly my crystal ball isn’t that good.

Feels like Bevo was indicating we're in a rebuilding phase in his latest presser regarding comments around selection (opting to go for youth rather than experience)

I wonder how the board sees it.

Speaking to a sitting board member before the season started. Not that way at all. Period. Very confident that we’ll be, and I quote, “well entrenched in the finals mix this year” - zero mention of the word “rebuild”

Does the board honestly believe Bevo is the coach we need? The skill set he brings was vital in 2015/16 and brought a fractured team together for a flag. The evidence suggests he’s not in top 10 match day coaches though (or I wouldn’t have thought) which is what this current group desperately require. Unfortunately for him, the blind faith inspiration he provided originally us well and truely buried under years of inconsistent results, and a media that chips unrelentingly at him. He hasn’t been able to deliver the results to prove said media wrong.

Our board seemingly doesn’t want to act prematurely but time comes for all coaches and very few of them recognise it when it strikes. That then becomes the boards job to move and their unwillingness to do so is hurting everyone at this point - players most of all.

My read of it is that he's recognising the need for a refresh of the side, much like we've seen in last year's premiers. Pies added young guys in Daicos, Hill, McCreery and Ginnivan to what was a fairly established side, and it gave an elevated sense of energy in what was an aging playing group. I imagine that's what Bevo envisions when adding Sanders and Gallagher to the mix, and is why I'd expect to see Clarke in the 22 sooner rather than later.

Better to shake things up a little with some youth, than to keep doing the same thing he's done for years now in playing a one-paced, defensively unaccountable, aging midfield. I can't imagine we see Libba, Treloar and Macrae in the same centre bounce ever again, and rightfully so. Missing finals last year was inexcusable with how little game time the younger players were getting. This isn't a rebuild as the core remains the same

Start of last season - board was 250% Bevo fanbois
By the end of last season I can say that his support dropped away fairly quickly, to the point of him being offered an out if he wanted it (he didn’t) - he still has a massive amount of supporters in and around the club but his on a much tighter leash then what he use to be on, would probably explain why him and Grant aren’t seeing eye to eye anymore.

It’s frustrating that we even asked him in the first place lol.

Of course he was going to say no. He wants to remain employed and earning great money.

Should not have been presented as a choice to him. And makes for a weird atmosphere where they all kind of know he’s on thin ice and will probably be removed when we finish 9th again.

I assume the only reason we asked as opposed to straight up sacking him was because that was the cheaper play. Hope he wanted out as much as we wanted him out and arrange an amicable payout that doesn’t screw our soft cap.

Very disappointed with our game against the Cats. I hope I'm wrong, but on that performance, we aren't a contender.

Scott got maximum value out of his players and their output. Yet again it felt like we were out-coached.

I was hoping the footy department overhaul would make a big difference. Because Bevo has so much self-belief and is very persuasive I suspect Egan is finding it very tough to implement a collegiate approach.

The club needs to keep its composure. Get Marra and English (maybe Baz) re-signed. Wait until the end of the season before a potential change of coach (unless the wheels really fall off). The minimum pass mark for mine is being a contender: top six and a win in the finals. Anything less and Bevo should be replaced.

At the start of the season I gave him five rounds. Still on the fence after four..... really need a statement this weekend
