FORMER Collingwood defender Ben Reid is returning to clubland after being appointed a development coach at the Western Bulldogs.

The 35-year-old will join the football department at the Whitten Oval and work under Luke Beveridge, who was Reid’s development coach at the Magpies in 2009 and 2010.

After retiring at the end of 2020, Reid returned to where he grew up and joined the Wangaratta Magpies in the Ovens and Murray League.

Reid was player-coach in 2022 and 2023 before coaching full-time in 2024.

Wangaratta won the premiership in 2022 before it was sensationally stripped off them due to salary cap breaches.

Port Adelaide recruit Joe Richards was drafted directly out of that side by Collingwood at pick No.48 in the 2022 AFL Draft. First-round prospect Joe Berry played the last six games for Wangaratta in 2023 and is set to be picked on November 20.

Reid played 152 games for the Magpies across 14 seasons in the AFL, including the 2010 premiership win against St Kilda.

The Murray Bushrangers product was drafted as a key forward but made his name at the other end of the ground, earning selection in the 2011 All-Australian team at centre half-back.

Injuries limited the 2006 pick No.8 in the latter stages of his career, but clubs have been keeping tabs on him for development coaching roles in the past 12 months, including Gold Coast, which recently added Hugh Greenwood to Damien Hardwick's staff.

The Bulldogs made extensive changes to their football department around Luke Beveridge last off-season, adding Matt Egan, Daniel Pratt, Jarryn Geary and Alex Johnson, amid two reviews of the program, but aren't expected to make many other changes.

Head of development Jamie Maddocks moved to West Coast last month to run the development program under new senior coach Andrew McQualter.

Strength and conditioning coach Des O’Sullivan moved to Geelong as physical performance manager last month to replace Scott Murphy.

Have zero inside knowledge but feel like it’ll be Geary.
Yep, Geary promoted, Johnson effectively promoted and Reid backfilled.

It seems like it's a good bunch of players to have. Three different players with different experiences at their respective AFL clubs without there being a big generational gap. A strong country league coach is a good stepping stone to an AFL development slot to counterbalance how a lot of coaches go through the NAB League pipeline anyway.

So we finally nabbed one of Bruce Reid's sons!

Are we walking to Sam too? Or both Sam Reids?!

Lineage goes back to Bruce Reid Snr, who was a bit of a boom recruit for us from Romsey in 1949, but VFL career was over by 1951. Died tragically young at 26. Son John was only 2, and second son Bruce Jnr wasn't even born yet.

I feel like it will be Johnson if anything. I have this inkling that he’s destined for bigger roles in AFL coaching world.

I don’t mind us grabbing younger coaching talent. Everyone clamours for experience but sometimes these coaches that are younger, fresher and more connected to the nuances of AFL football might be more effective. The best coaches have to start somewhere.

Yeah I got a feeling that Johnson is going to be a very sought after coach in a few years.

The Western Bulldogs are pleased to confirm AFL Premiership defender Ben Reid has joined the red, white and blue coaching panel for season 2025.

Reid, who played 152 games for Collingwood, has been appointed as a Development Coach alongside Jarryn Geary and Alex Johnson, focusing on the Club’s young forwards.
The 35-year-old was part of Collingwood’s 2010 premiership victory as a player and was named All Australian the following season.

Since retiring in 2020, Reid gained coaching experience with Wangaratta in the Ovens & Murray competition.

Reid’s father Bruce has a strong affiliation to the Bulldogs having played 86 games for Footscray between 1977 and 1982, while brother Sam recently retired at the Sydney Swans.

Reid said he was thrilled to be joining the Bulldogs at such an exciting time.

“Bevo gave me a call last week and I am just really excited to get in here and meet everyone. It is a really exciting group of forwards – quality talls and smalls that play an exhilarating brand of footy,” Reid said.

“I found a real passion for coaching - the relationships, the day-to-day work - it really sparked something for me. I am just rapt to have landed at a great club like the Western Bulldogs.

“I am really strong on building good habits, from day one of pre-season all the way through a year and overall trying to get players to have really long careers.

“Bevo was my first development coach at Collingwood, so it has come full circle and I am excited to get to work.”

Reid is the only addition to the Bulldogs coaching panel after Jamie Maddocks' departure to West Coast last month.

In charge of the forwards as dev coach is interesting.
