Just had this pop up on my Facebook, 1974 it said. I turned 15 that year... ah the good old days.

The beginnings of travesty. Is it any wonder that the modern Australian is obese, spends a few weeks of their life per year in traffic; in a country that is constantly burning; in a world that is heating up; either pushed out further into the fringes, living in tents in public parks or spending half their paycheck to gift to a landlord for their poorly insulated rental so that some 20-something zit-faced grub in a suit can come round every three months to make sure that that corporate boot can be placed firmly enough on your jugular so that your ambition is limited to be nothing more but that cog in that wealth funnel for the landlord. That city in the picture wasn't built for humans. Its built perfectly for cars. As soon as Elon figures out how to download AIs into your car we can finally delete ourselves and let the cars take over what is rightfully theirs.

I wish the Dutch had taken some time to properly explore this land and settle instead of packing their bags and leaving immediately after seeing the west coast. Imagine a properly built city with density, walking tracks and bike paths with lovely green spaces and shade. Maybe some humans could live there?

While I agree with most of what you said, the identity of the coloniser has nothing to do with it. Any country that was wealthy and growing fast in the 50s and 60s would have followed the US model of low density and highways everywhere. Only issue is we're not smart enough to properly change our ways now that we see the problems.

I didn't think a photo of a 1970s Gabba would elicit such a deep social commentary.... nice.

Now that's a rant! Nice job.

And at the risk of getting off-track, have you been to some of the places the Dutch did colonise?
How about Galle Forte in Sri Lanka.
I watched an international cricket match there from the walls of the forte with plenty of locals.
Originally built by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch.
Great place to visit.

Channel 7 news just announced that Cricket is to be introduced to the Brisbane Olympics.
I assume 20/20 cricket.

That throws up a lot of other questions in regard to where the Lions new venue will be.

You’d imagine there would spread over various regional centres, Allan Border Oval and probably big games played at Carrara.

MCG, WACA, Adelaide Oval, Hobart ... basically use all of the test venues around the country
I think that is spreading the Brisbane Olympics a little too far.
AFL would have to be fully behind that proposal.
I know a few other state venues were earmarked for some soccer games on the east coast.

The IOC Exec Board on Friday will decide on which additional sports to add for the 2028 L.A. GamesGETTY IMAGES

Men’s and women’s T20 cricket “will be included” in the 2028 L.A. Games, according to sources cited by Ziegler & Ammon of the London TIMES. The IOC Exec Board on Friday will decide on which additional sports to add for the Games; that decision “will need to be ratified by the IOC’s session” in Mumbai next month. IOC President Thomas Bach is “understood to be very keen to include cricket because of its appeal to the vast populations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, which are traditionally not so engaged in Olympic sports as other parts of the world.” Additionally, Bach is “encouraging India to bid for the 2036 Olympics,” and having cricket “established as an Olympic sport would be a big boost towards that and would also be appropriate for the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia.” Meanwhile, L.A. Games officials are “understood to be willing to accommodate cricket” in return for flag football being added (London TIMES, 9/4).

.................
I did not know what flag football was.

Is adding touch gridiron to the LA Olympics a bit like us putting Aussie Rules in ours ... I mean how many countries play gridiron football?

I suppose America (LA) are proposing a compromise as cricket is mostly unknown in the USA and a lot of other countries around the world.
We could try with AFL but i doubt it would get very far.

Played by a vast amount of nations compared to gridiron which basically is only localised in one country. Better alternative would be baseball considering it’s actually considered the most popular sport in some countries not named America.

Hense why i said it is probably a compromise.
It is based on Gridiron and on a very small oval 70 x 25 yards or 64 x 23 meters.

Baseball dropped in 2012 after just 5 appearances because of budgetary and logistical concerns.
I would have thought the same would apply for cricket as it was for baseball.

Personally, i don't think either should be Olympic sports along with Rugby 7's.

I think the more recent Olympic Games just adds a few sports to be a bit different.
Breaking (Breakdancing) has been chosen to feature on the Paris 2024 Olympic sports programme as a new sport.
Surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing were first introduced in Tokyo in 2021 and are retained for Paris.

Sydney Olympics did the same with soccer and it was fine.

The contention for grounds would be the big issue given AFL's reticence to play ball before.

Soccer is in again, but cricket need bigger grounds that AFL will also need as we both mentioned.
So, it is an extra sport not initially planned for.

The Government still planning on where to relocate the Lions and possibly cricket.
That venue should have begun the construction stages now it they want it completed before the Gabba comes down.

A link to Austadiums on what they have been advised is the venues being used in 2032.
It has further links to what is proposed for that venue.
