The IOC Exec Board on Friday will decide on which additional sports to add for the 2028 L.A. GamesGETTY IMAGES

Men’s and women’s T20 cricket “will be included” in the 2028 L.A. Games, according to sources cited by Ziegler & Ammon of the London TIMES. The IOC Exec Board on Friday will decide on which additional sports to add for the Games; that decision “will need to be ratified by the IOC’s session” in Mumbai next month. IOC President Thomas Bach is “understood to be very keen to include cricket because of its appeal to the vast populations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, which are traditionally not so engaged in Olympic sports as other parts of the world.” Additionally, Bach is “encouraging India to bid for the 2036 Olympics,” and having cricket “established as an Olympic sport would be a big boost towards that and would also be appropriate for the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia.” Meanwhile, L.A. Games officials are “understood to be willing to accommodate cricket” in return for flag football being added (London TIMES, 9/4).

Is adding touch gridiron to the LA Olympics a bit like us putting Aussie Rules in ours ... I mean how many countries play gridiron football?

I suppose America (LA) are proposing a compromise as cricket is mostly unknown in the USA and a lot of other countries around the world.
We could try with AFL but i doubt it would get very far.

Played by a vast amount of nations compared to gridiron which basically is only localised in one country. Better alternative would be baseball considering it’s actually considered the most popular sport in some countries not named America.

Hense why i said it is probably a compromise.
It is based on Gridiron and on a very small oval 70 x 25 yards or 64 x 23 meters.

Baseball dropped in 2012 after just 5 appearances because of budgetary and logistical concerns.
I would have thought the same would apply for cricket as it was for baseball.

Personally, i don't think either should be Olympic sports along with Rugby 7's.

I think the more recent Olympic Games just adds a few sports to be a bit different.
Breaking (Breakdancing) has been chosen to feature on the Paris 2024 Olympic sports programme as a new sport.
Surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing were first introduced in Tokyo in 2021 and are retained for Paris.

I think that is spreading the Brisbane Olympics a little too far.
AFL would have to be fully behind that proposal.
I know a few other state venues were earmarked for some soccer games on the east coast.
Sydney Olympics did the same with soccer and it was fine.

The contention for grounds would be the big issue given AFL's reticence to play ball before.

Soccer is in again, but cricket need bigger grounds that AFL will also need as we both mentioned.
So, it is an extra sport not initially planned for.

The Government still planning on where to relocate the Lions and possibly cricket.
That venue should have begun the construction stages now it they want it completed before the Gabba comes down.

A link to Austadiums on what they have been advised is the venues being used in 2032.
It has further links to what is proposed for that venue.

Flag football in America is a lot like Oztag in Australial

Interesting article and looks like lots of construction in the Wooloongabba area.

What i found more interesting was the link to "The Northshore Quandary" at Hamilton.
The Games Athlete Village sites but are questioning the lack of transport options, with eventually 24,500 extra people in the area.
A few rail options were given.
The cheapest being a 1.4km rail extension from Doomben to a new station Northshore.
Apparently, no residential land resumptions will be needed. A quick google maps check and they may be correct.

Another option would be extremely expensive but would benefit Brisbane in the long term.

This popped up on my youtube recommendations earlier in the week, nothing that we don't already know but all in 8 minutes and pretty well put together. About the whole Gabba precinct not just the stadium itself.

Thanks trikster, i am bored with the PF still a week away so i had a look.
Another Federal Senate committee. A waste of public money in a lot of cases including this one.

I am not sure why they have mentioned The Gabba at all.
The federal government have already opted out of the Gabba funding.
The federal government is fully funding the $2.5 billion Roma Street Olympic site and take on that risk of construction blowouts.
The Federal Government chose that option rather than go 50% with The Gabba and 50% with Roma Street.
I noticed no recommendations on that $2.5 billion proposal.

Recommendations 1,2 & 4 has nothing to do with the Olympics.
The committee recommends that the Australian Government takes on a facilitation and coordination role in order to salvage the 2026 Commonwealth Games being held in Australia. Before the end of 2023, the Australian Government should:

Number 3: About future funding model (Okay look at that)
Number 5: Is about The Gabba. (as mentioned above now taken out of federal hands by themselves)
Number 6: Demolition of school. (it is not being demolished but then go on to say something needed closer than Coorparoo. Also, a little about the warmup track at Raymond Park. But no houses will be resumed. Mentions other known heritage listed properties)
Number 7: Move the Canoe event to Penrith.

Thats it
Quite a lot of the remaining 65 pages is most likely a cut and paste from other senate enquiries.
Things like witness, and guideline for members to follow.
A few pages on the Olympics trying to justify their recommendations.
The vast majority of pages are on the cancelled commonwealth Games.

Is a joke that we will be without the Gabba for as long as will be. 4 or 5 seasons?
4 seasons... 2026-29, then we can play on it for the 2030-31 seasons and it will be out of action for the Olympics for a chunk of the 2032 season although I have seen talk that we will play a large percentage of our away games in a stretch during the Olympic window.

Still with no alternative plan in place. Ridiculous. Governments fault not clubs.

I think the longer it drags on the more likely it is that we won’t have a good option.

We’ll be out of there for the entire 2032 season most likely. There’ll be a hell of a lot of prep to rip up all the turf and make it an athletics track, and then it’ll take time to re-lay the turf after as well.

Fair to middling chance I could have departed this mortal coil by then and wont have to worry about that.⚰️🪦
