Citing precedent is missing the point. For too long the AFL has been too slack on punchers. Just a couple of weeks ago they let off Zak Jones for a punch to the head before the game even started. Should have got 2 weeks. Fyfe should have got at least 4. Cotchin should have got a week for jumper-punching Neale last year, and another week for the love-tap to Lonie's guts. Every punch should cop at least a week. Barry Hall should have got a year, if not life, for his despicable assault on Staker. The AFL has been soft on punches, and here we are. Enough is way too much.

The other side to this is the AFL also needs to crack down on taggers scragging, so ball players like Cotchin and Gaff don't lash out in frustration at constant illegal tactics.

I don't know how Cotchin didn't belt Macaffer a few years ago. Half the MCC members were ready to jump the fence. Cut down on scraggers and you'll eliminate a lot of frustrated punches, and we'll get to see players play footy. There's currently no outrage about scragging though, so the AFL will let it continue.
