Really enjoying the run and gun style of game adopted under Bevo and this style takes me back to the exciting brand of footy back in the days of the Rocket Eade era. I have fond memories of the beltings we carried out in those days - Richmond round 1 comes to mind.

What is even more pleasing is that intensity and being first at the ball hasn't gone away from our game since Macca's departure.

I recall the team playing attacking footy at times last year and Macca used to shut it down even when it was a winning result under the contested footy mantra. Although, we are far more clean by hand this year thus far.

If the dogs are able to implement both sides to the game effectively this year, we are in for some exciting performances and we may end up winning more games then we lose. Yes we are a young starting team, but there is also pressure for spots from young up and comers.

Have not yet seen the game :( - how did TBoyd go?

To be honest, I was very disappointed in Tom last night.

My knock on him is he "appears" a bit lazy. If he doesn't mark it, and it goes to the opposition, I continually saw what looked like half hearted efforts to chase and tackle. A huge contrast to Redpath, who was in the best group of players for mine. Perhaps it's just lack of fitness, but there just seemed to be a "someone else will do it - I'm here to mark the footy" attitude. Perhaps it's just me.

I'd be showing Tom vision of Red's intent, pressure, tackling, chasing and all round effort and saying "this is what we expect from you too, son".

Tom's lack of match fitness is clear to see. He will learn from this and will look to improve these aspects in the VFL. Redpath has take time and it's starting to come together now so a bit harsh to make comparisons at this point.

For me v Pies was about the number 2 ...

2 Rucks (Minson and Cordy)
2 Genuine tall defenders (Talia and Roughie)
2 Versatile defenders for talls and mid-sized (Morris and Hamling)
2 Key forwards (Boyd and Redpath)
2 Mid sized forwards (Stringer and Grant)
2 Goals to Wallis, Redpath, Dickson, Jong and Goodes (the last 2 for MD)
2 Marks above his head for Ayce
2 Captain Bob ... thank god!

With that structure we looked a genuine chance to compete.

Here we go, the first of many "knocks" on the kid. Give him a chance FFS. He isn't going to dominate games for at least a couple of seasons,so don't expect him to. If he continues to do what you think is being lazy by the end of the year, then I think you can dust off the comment and ask the question but after a Praccy match where he competed, bought it to ground for the smaller guys and took the Pies best defender at the ripe old age of 19 with less than 10 games experience. Spell please

Just wanted to say Kudos to Matty Boyd too. I am one of his harshest critics on his disposal and turnovers but I thought he played really well off the back half. Bev has found a nice spot for him back there and his experience with murph and moz will be vital in the season.

When's the last time we dished out an absolute spanking? Freo 6 years ago? Norf around the same time? #Nohomo but I had forgotten how much fun it is to rip another teams pants down and really wack in :)

Struggling for match fitness, have to remember he missed a bit of pre season too. Thought his effort and endeavour was good, just towards the end of the game was out of gas.

Brisbane round 1 2013 :)

Agreed he looked off the pace ... but how good is it to have a genuine contest, someone who doesn't jump too early and who makes smart decisions with ball in hand (and no I'm not talking about Liam Jones).

I must've been away. I haven't had that much fun at the footy for years. So satisfied this morning praccy match or not.
I was at that Brisbane game in 2013. First time I took my sons to a live game, it was awesome.

Loved it. Just loved every minute. Don't know where to start.

The broom has gone through and we have a fresh, fast, exciting look about our footy. Plenty of energy, pressure, hardness and so much to like.

Would love to make the doomsayers choke on their words this year.

I have reported on training and practice matches this season, I have stated many times that Luke Beveridge is the most important appointment made at the Bulldogs in many many years.
At last we have the coaching appointment right.
I stated that Luke Beveride will end up a very special person at our club.
Early days, but watching Foorscray VFL yesterday, and Western Bulldogs last night we are certainly on the right track.
Ryan Griffen resigning from the club, the sacking of Macca, the recruiting of Tom Boyd, the appointment of Luke Beveridge.
I believe last October will change our clubs fortunes for the next 10 years, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
GO DOGGIES.

Settle down champ, and read the post properly.

Where did I say I had a problem with his competing for the footy or expecting him to dominate?

I didn't. And don't.

My "knock" was a perception of what he did (didn't) do when he wasn't in a contest or had the footy. Chasing, tackling, pressure. Go back and have another look, more often than not after one of his aerial contests and the ball came to ground (which I agree was excellent for a young fella and assisted the small guys immensely) he seemed to just stop to a walk.

Compare this to Big Red who looks like a contested animal - and the contrast was stark.

Maybe it's just a fitness thing and the first contest takes it out of him to the point he can't back up for a second effort yet.

Don't mistake an observation with unrealistic expectations. I don't expect much from him at all and won't do for 2-3 years. My observation was that his lack of forward pressure stood out compared to the rest of the side (which was just outstanding).

Forget Boyd, we should be paying bonts over a mil a year.
Seriously, preseason or not I am stoked that we won. The most pleasing thing for me is that the team we had last year would have lost this game.
There is a common denominator in this ......... we now have someone who can coach!

Luke Beveridge has shown is his very short that (1) he can inspire and prepare players for AFL football (b) he has a gameplan that can bring success (plus respect for our club) (c) he can actually demonstrate that he can coach at AFL level.

It's amazing when we look upon the past few years to realise how we were all brainwashed by the verbal dribble that would come out of Brendan McCartneys mouth about building for the future and the quality young men crap. I too became a believer but was regularly concerned that we didn't appear to have a game plan that was up to AFL standard. Even Luke mentioned that it was difficult to understand what we were doing when Hawthorn played the Bulldogs.

Our players look far more inspired and upbeat this year.

Interesting, I have read many articles and listened to lots of players interviews on radio since the departure of Brendan McCartney, and I now feel we were all brainwashed with his public rhetoric. It has become evident that he was a bully, he lost many of the players, he obviously played his favourites and ignored those he didn't like to wallow in the VFL, he was only capable of coaching his dour "crack in" style of football, he didn't know how to coach on match day against an opposition ................... He just wasn't a good coach!!!

Last night we saw what someone with coaching potential can actually do.

Loved last nights match. The fact it was Collingwood made it all the more enjoyable. They are in a lot of trouble...almost their best side and they looked rusty and lost when the pressure got turned up.

Loved our gang tackling. Guys prepared to leave their own man to assist. Something we haven't seen for a season or two;
If big Red keeps competing the way he did tonight he will quickly become a fan favourite;
Bontempelli may very well be our most important player both now and over the next 5 years;
Big Wills best game in well over a season;
Hamling reads the game really well, just a shame he's a little light. Give him a preseason or two. Is our next Lake;
If Grants found some confidence and last nights game is his base line, then he's earned himself a place on the wing;
May finally see some dividends from Ayce. He plays Round one for mine.

Our defensive half looked great tonight. Be interesting to see how it stands up against a midfield that takes on the game.

Starting to feel that way myself and I have made it a point not to bag out BMac. Truth is, the side out there last night looked nothing like the side of 12 months ago.

They all seemed to be prepared to back each other up
