I too lament the opportunities we miss at burying (or at least sticking) a tackle or putting in a good shepherd, it's just too noticeable that these are things we don't do enough of

Carlton supporters are pretty bad usually, but I'm thinking reverse-troll here. No attempt at subtlety at all.

Strange game really. At the ground I felt like Carlton completely dominated us, at times it was like watching a swarm of light blue jumpers in a full ground training drill. We got absolutely smashed in the ruck and couldn't win a centre clearance to save our lives.

Yet somehow we ended up with 7 more scoring shots. Bizarre.

One thing that stood out for me was how much better Carlton set up in the pack situations. They consistently had 2 or 3 guys disciplined enough to spread and hold their space, the ball would be flicked out and they would zip it up the ground with ease.

The damning part is even with those numbers holding wide they still managed to be first to the ball in every pack. Too many of our guys didn't want it bad enough tonight.

Lower recall imminent.

No problems.

When frothing at the mouth, try to spell properly and use adequate punctuation. Otherwise one tends to view you as uncouth and a little dim.
Cheers and feel free to call again. :thumbsu:

Tool. Ignore this guy. Not all Carl supporters are like this.

Your team is going places, you have a lot of depth in your list.

This game was frustrating from our point of view because we just let you flood so easily and hence get 2 on 1s everywhere in the fwd line. It's not great to watch but that's where I just don't think Rats cuts it as a coach, he didn't have a plan to counter it. When we got on that role in the 3rd qtr and were leading by 5 goals, it became about just restricting us from scoring and it worked, but on the other hand, we defended really well as well.

Yes, we won, but it was because we were more effective with the ball. Def not a result of good coaching. I know you guys missed Sandi but I thought your rucks broke even with ours, if not beats ours. Us on the other hand badly missed Carrazzo, his clearance work and blocking for Judd/Murph is so important to our hopes of finishing top 4. I think he would have tagged Mundy as well.

Even though you lost I think you guys could push top 4 if you fix up your road record. There's so much talent on your list that I think your capable

Was a great win by us, 5 injuries and going to Perth after a bad loss, anyone who still cant give credit to Carlton is a fool.

I must admit, I now have to give carlton a little more credit, I was at the bombers game last week and after what I saw, I thought we may have been able to get hold of you.... alas, you have an extremely skillful side... in fact , people raving about hawthorns skills running from defence should take a look at the skills the blues displayed last night.

had we of taken our chances we could have won, I think we won as much ball, but in the end, we lapsed and all credit to the blues... in reality we are probably a side that will only just sneak into the 8 this year anyway, if at all.

Would have been interesting to see how we would have gone if the blues had a full squad and we had a fit fyfe and sandilands... we will never know. congratulations, top four is beckoning :thumbsu:

Thanks KP you are right you guys should have been in front at half time, wasted some very easy shots on goal, Freo would have maybe have got up if you had kicked straight in that second quarter. We tired as well in the last and ran out of legs, I still think the Blues need to improve a few things to be a legit top 4 team. But I am happy the way things are going, you guys need to dump the flood crap you are a better team than that, the reason I am happy with the win is because it took guts and hard work, those injuries to us really hurt us last week and we were asleep most of the game against the Dons. Anyway bad luck guys, you have improved and should make the top six, you have some good kids and they will get better as the season progresses.

Good post, thanks for popping in. I agree with your assessment of Rats. Blues won that game because of very skilled players doing their thing when Freo depressed themselves with poor misses and occasional brain fades. In terms of 'game plan', I didn't see one that was going to get Carlton enough shots on goal to win - it ended up being enough because we couldn't execute.

Freo are going through the biggest transformation in the club's history.
Ross Lyon is well paid for a good reason .

Fremantle are now five games into a major change in game plan, with essentially the same core group of players who need to make the adjustments in the way they approach it.

That is obviously going to take more than 5 games to master, especially with different players trickling back from injury recovery. So, they are going to be at different levels of understanding of the new system and hence it is entirely understandable if not expected, there will be games like this one .

Ross is not an idiot and has demonstrated that he prefers to keep radical changes to team selection to a minimum while he assesses who best fits his game plan.

These factors lend themselves to inconsistent performance from both the team and individuals , which was glaring tonight.

Consider also, Carlton are a likely top four team and have a lot of elite players.

The night was set up for a fail from the start.
One look at the umpire panel and it could not have been worse from a Freo perspective.
The game starts and the bounce of the ball was diabolical; that continued for the entire match.
Kicking at goal was bizarre; from players who we know are much better than what we witnessed.

We were poor , they were good.
It happens.
Our poor was really terrible by our standards and carlton, at one point were 6 goals 1 which by any measure, is excellent.

Freo are still on track and at 3-2 after round five and considering we outplayed Carlton on the night , there is more promise in Fremantle than not.
Disappointed but not despondent.

Is it safe in here now?

. the blood has been mopped up, the broken furniture repaired??

It never really got violent. Thing is, generally speaking, supporters don't mind losing providing the team has given effort and was clearly beaten by a better team on the day which is what happened here. Carlton had a bit too much class when it counted but our boys weren't disgraced.

It's when we fold like a deck of cards against seemingly equal or inferior opposition people rant and rave and with good reason.

Not disgraced? We lost to Carlton. I am really pissed...

Agree, but there's a bit of extra angst about it (including in my own little world) because we really should have won that game, or at least been in a better position to. To basically spend so much time in attacking positions and have the game played on our terms for so long and not take advantage of it is bloody frustrating. You might get away with that against the likes of Brisbane, but a team with speed and classy disposal like Carlton will hurt you if you don't grab your chances and they did.

My thoughts:

positives:

Strong finish: really impressed with Lyon's stranglehold on Blues towards the end of the third and through the 4th and our come back. Not something we saw much of in the past. Our fitness is obviously very good at the moment and a new never give up attitude.

Shots on goal: whilst we missed most of them (a negative) we made the opportunities and had the number of scoring shots required to win.

Ibbo: thought he was great tonight (aside from getting in the way of McPharlin's mark which led to the Garlett goal in the first). Mark after mark in defence.
MJ: same as Ibbo. very good.
McPharlin: very good particularly as a target in the forward line, changed up the Carlton defence and made our F50 entry more dangerous.
Hill: need I say more
Crowley: very good. Don't care what gablett says. But should drop forward going forward as is a good goal kicker.

Negatives:
Accuracy: for obvious reasons with many players at fault
Mids: thought the touch of some of the mids was a bit off last night which is not unexpected given a top 4 team and top midfield and they've only been back a couple of weeks.
Anthony: vale 50 game career which finished on 27 April 2012.
Forwardline: what forward line? My only criticism of Lyon is that our two best forwards are Pav and Ballas. If they play in the middle (most of Pav's touches were around the centre square) then we get the result we saw with Pav kicking from the centre square towards goal hoping a chasing Hill will make it to the ball before 2 defenders. What a ridiculous scenario!!! Totally changed with McPharlin moved forward providing a forward target. We MUST have a target who stays in the forward 50 at all times. Maybe try SNOS or put Bradley back. Ballas to stay around half forward a kick ahead of the ball (with Mayne). Having him in the middle does not add anything that we can't get with Hill, Mundy, Barlow, Fyfe, or Gu. He only lights the game up from half forward onwards.
DeBoer: good player but no confidence in front of goals. After he misses loses confidence for the rest of the game. Either practice goal kicking with the dedication of Beckham (hours a day) or stay away from goal.
Skill errors: a bunch of these but I would attribute this largely to the pressure by Carlton. Aside from this we could have won with only two of the many shots going through the big sticks rather than the points so not too fussed about this.

Summary: Anthony's played his last game. Pav and Ballas are too deep and need to stay closer to the half forward line with maybe the occasional run in the middle. A tall forward to stay in 50 arc at all times. Kicking practice at training this week. Aside from that we're not far off the top teams which is excellent given last year and the changes we have already seen. Games without injuries are also excellent.

Well done to Carlton for making the most of their opportunities and going home with the win, and gee Garlett is good to watch when he gets the ball, and Walker's marking attempts.

Well when I watched the game live on TV last night I flew off the broom handle repeatedly at incompetence and ******** umpires

Post game, I called up my missus and she let me have a whinge about the football which was absolute gold.

Anyway in the cold light of day, now a hell of a lot calmer, well, I see the game as six of one and half a dozen of the other

On one hand we should've won that game. 7 goals 15 is a diabolical effort and really it was a joke watching miss after miss after miss

On the other hand, we didn't deserve to get close to them as we lacked effort and intensity for the full 4 quarters.

Last week I genuinely believed in my own mind that Ross Lyon understood how we should be playing but really, last night, took about 5 steps back and stripped Freo of any sort of attack

Ross Lyon football is having 18 players on the defensive side of center and it was farcial to see the ball being kicked into the forward line only to have no-one there as they were all on the defensive side of half-way.

When the ball did get up forward there was no cohesion or structure there which I believe is the responsibility of Sumich and he failed (yet again)

Both Lyon and Sumich in my mind had all the tactics wrong and the only credit I'll give is that the Freo of old would've rolled over but this Freo keep fighting to the end which is a credit.

That said, we've gone from an attacking, exciting team to something which really isn't Freo. In fact, I don't even know what it is because whatever it is, it's ugly, painful to watch and is causing me to age by 20 years every game. How I'm alive after watching that shit from last night, I'll frankly never know.

As for the players

goal kicking - crap
structure - what structure?
forward line - what the hell is that?
effort - 50/50 or only when we wanted to
skills - dreadful
stoppage work - reasonable
defense - surprisingly good but seriously Ross, stop playing favourites and piss Dawson off to the WAFL. He's at best a WAFL player.

It was frustrating. It was ugly. It wasn't Freo footy and really, I expect better.
