Scrads said:Round 7, 2011:
Port Adelaide Power (1-5/15th) v Hawthorn Hawks (3-2/6th)
Aami Stadium.
Form:
The Hawks, coming off their Round 6 bye, will no doubt come into this match as favourites against a Port Adelaide side who has performed beyond dismally in recent weeks. The only game I have attended in season 2011 has been, in fact, Port Adelaide's solitary victory for the year against cross-town rivals Adelaide. If attending this game has taught me anything its that regardless of how abysmal Port have been playing lately, they are capable of playing football at a level which can bring down alot of sides. The Power, goal-less at quarter time and 5 or 6 goals adrift of the Crows turned everything around in the remainder of the game to run out 32 point winners in what was at the time, a very promising performance after quarter time. Since then the power have struggled to say the least. They gave 15 other clubs a sigh of relief when they became the first side to lose to Gold Coast and were demolished by a North Melbourne side who have been equally as dissapointing. The Hawks form has been a little inconsistent which includes a 3-goal loss to Geelong, a narrow win over the Eagles and a demolition of the Tigers. Its worth noting that we have a large history of losing games at AAMI Stadium and also of losing against Port (I dont think anyone will forget the successive demolitions we recieved from them in their peak years).
Last time:
Last year we played the Power in round 18 at AAMI Stadium. The Power were surprise winners 13.14.(92) v 12.12.(84). The Power kicked 4.5 to our 1.4 in the final term to achieve the victory. For us, Franklin kicked his usual 3 goals, and our biggest possession winners were Sewell(23), Cyril(22) and Sam(22). Jay Schulz finished with 4 goals whilst Kane Cornes(23) and Robbie Gray(22) had the most of the footy for them. It is also worth noting that Cyril was involved in a scuffle late in the game, and was given 2 weeks for striking. Brownlow votes: 3.J.Schulz, 2.B.Renouf, 1.J.Westhoff. (This made me check out Renoufs stats for that game, he had 12 touches, 2 goals, 19 hitouts and 7 tackles... not sure how many other games Renouf has polled in )
Selection:
This week, the Hawks will be without Cameron Bruce (Knee, 4-6 weeks) and possibly Cyril Rioli (Hamstring, Test). Paul Puopolo has been earmarked as one inclusion, with players such as Whitecross, Osborne and Murphy also possibilities. For port, Dean Brogan (Achilles) is only a small chance of playing in the side which was embarassed by North Melbourne, whilst Travis Boak (Concussion) and Danyle Pearce (Omitted) may be recalled. We may also see Port's first round draft pick from last year, Ben Jacobs.
EDIT: Puopolo and Smith are confirmed to come into the side this week
Game Style:
Hawks:
The Hawks need to make some improvements on their effort against the Cats 2 weeks ago. Too often Geelong Midfielders had too much space and were able to find each other through strings of handballs easily. Players I think were too worried about the space they were covering in the press rather than the playersbeing held in it. Another point (which has been thrashed to death on these boards this week) was the lack of forward pressure. Geelong were also able to waltz the ball out of the backline effortlessly on a huge number of occasions which means players such as Whitecross, Puopolo or Osborne could be used to help this. Whats also important is these guys doing this role also create some scoreboard pressure. I expect Port to take a leaf out of Geelong's book and double team Franklin whenever he is playing deep forward. Its Crucial that Roughead and Hale stand up if this happens or we will not be able to kick enough goals.
Power:
Key Match-ups:
Alipate Carlisle v Lance Franklin:
This one goes without saying, Alipate is a great defender but although Franklin should still be good enough to win this duel, Alipate will be getting ALOT of assistance from his fellow players.
Troy Chaplin v Jarryd Roughead:
Jarryd is going to need to be good here, not only is he going to have to draw Chaplin away from helping out Carlisle against Buddy, but he is also going to make sure Troy does not create too much rebound for the Power like he often does.
Brent Renouf/David Hale v Dean Brogan/Jackson Trengove:
(This is assuming Brogan plays). Last year, we won the hitouts 39-37 but it didnt stop Port from winning. Personally, I would take a similar hitout count like that this year as I think Renouf isnt playing aswell as he must have played that game. Justin Westhoof and Jarryd Roughead both may pinch-hit, Westhoff being a particularly influential player for Port recently.
Justin Westhoff v Josh Gibson:
Usually, I would give this job to Stratton but with his injury, I think Josh will have to be the man. The key here being Josh should be able to hurt Westhoff the other way whilst hopefully curbing Westhoff as much as possible.
Prediction:
Whilst this is most definitely a danger game against a team and ground that seems to bend us over every time, I can see the Hawks winning this one. 32 points margin.
