Gameday Thread: WCE vs Port, NAB Rd2

Patrick Keane suggested that if WCE finish top there is a fair chance of playing the final at home , due to our heavy travel schedule through the year !

On the game , heard on the radio , Port sound like an improving team and it sounds like our forward line efficiency needs work and a Lecras replacement wont be found till half way through the season , if at all !

I take your point, but it's a preseason game. In the regular season you'll be able to see every game live. Not sure how much EPL Preseason is broadcast?
As I take your point, but Foxtel/Austar still have subscribers to satisfy, why not just give us a choice? They make plenty through subscriptions and the ever growing abundance of adverts. Unlikely to happen was just a passing woe is us type comment.
Yeah, bit tricky that, think its setup differently in that there's a lot of friendlies outside of the UK.
Not working for Foxtel these days are you larri? ;-)

Haha, no mate, not working for them, and would have loved to have watched the game.

There have been some over the top expectations for a preseason comp, especially given where some of these games are played and the size of audience they'll actually get.

Redden 22 hitouts to Cox 12? Whats wrong with cox. Reddens a first gamer.
Nothing wrong with Coxy. Has his priorities in order. He is working up to full match fitness and will be ready to blitz in round one. Naturally your boy was out to impress against the All Australian ruckman and Coxy allowed him to win some hitouts and avoid injury in the process.

Oh i agree, I think expectations are heightened, but I think it's largely due to the "24/7 access footy for all" promotion of recent times. As well as our success last season.
Maybe they're still learning, either way will be interesting to see how they manage it all this season, if they do it well, then we've all won.
Providing you've hooked everyone here up with cheap Foxtel ;-)

Would love it cheap for me too, our two boxes cost a mint.

What's the point in an AFL level game if you can't watch it. It is 2012, yet we can choose from 4 or 5 premier league matches played simultaneously?
Good win anyway, even if I had to follow it on here :) thanks for the commentary lads.
I'm sure if a English broadcaster wanted to cover 4/5 NAB cup games, Fox would show them too.

Just got home from the game and a few of my impressions. Schofield was brilliant in this first half, i thought masten was very impressive and thought darling and a few others showed a real will to attack the ball and ball carrier.

Thought swift was shithouse, made lots of bad decisions (not as many as the friggin maggot in the green shirt with a 4 on it). I thought a few of the other guys were disappointing to and thought we really should have put the game away early (to half time we had something like 1,5,10 with 4 shots on goal out on the full.

Thought sheppard was alright and did a few nice things whilst also making a few mistakes, lynch in the backline is ****ing useless and i just never want to see him there. Overall on lynch's performance he seems to be more 2010 than 2011 at the moment.

My call in the lead up to the 09 draft was right, we should have taken butcher. The guy is going to be an absolute superstar. At half time port had 5 goals with butcher having 4 of them and a goal assist on the other one, he was a real shining light for them.

Lastly we should have won by a fair bit more, we did a lot of work and a lot of the luck went against us with port getting a fair few cheap goals where some of the young guys just didnt bring enough when it came to the press as well as a few lucky bounces for port and some downright pitiful umpiring imo. At one stage late i watched hams just straight up in the air and a port player moved forward and headbutted him in the chest. High tackle apparently. In other cases (this applies to both sides) when you are tackled just throw yourself forward because if the guy tackling is even remotely near your back you'll get the free.

With lecras, shuey and nicnat not playing i thought we distinctly lacked class and wont be top 4 this year unless some of the classier youngsters really step up.

Few thoughts from the game...

Masten was very good. Played with a level of hunger he hasn't shown enough.

Stevens kicked a couple of goals, but still has a way to go before we would even think about giving him a semi-permanent spot in the team. One series of play took my eye specifically in the second quarter. He stood behind a port player who easily gathered the ball and cleared it back into their forward line. No pressure whatsoever on the port player. We then got the ball back and Stevens made space and pleaded for Kerr to kick it to him, which he did only for Stevens to completely butcher an uncontested mark. One isolated moment obviously and he got better from there, but it was very disappointing.

I've given Swift enough of a spray here that I don't need to delve more into my bag of insults, but he was poor again. Poor disposal, poor pressure. Play him again next week though, give him the chance in the preseason because on this form he'll be good for Claremont this year.

Back line struggled at times. Butcher kicked five, but at various stages he was being manned up by a much shorter Jacob Brennan. Wilson did some good things but also got badly found out at times.

A dysfunctional day by the team. Apart from the first 15 minutes we didn't play well at all. But Port were good, very good in fact. Doubt they'll finish second bottom this year.

Just got back.

The heat really seemed to mess with us today, so many fumbles and basic skill errors, it was 2010-esque. Structurally it was a similar story, McInnes often played as the sole key forward and his inexperience really showed. He was good when actually involved in the play, but found himself out of position plenty which left us with nothing to kick to. Often going forward we had Hams, Weedon and Stevens as long targets.

On the other hand Butcher loved being matched up on Wilson, he consistently sat himself about 40m ahead of play for the outlet kick and much more often than not won the contest.

Ultimately we had much more class through the middle, but our forward line was dysfunctional and we didn't capitalise the way we should have. Probably would have lost to a stronger Port side.

Masten was easily our best, looks super fit, stronger and even a bit quicker too. Had a game reminiscent of late last year vs Brisbane, really seemed to be everywhere.

Swift started well, made the usual mistakes by foot but his hands were excellent in close. Faded later in the game and started to fumble a lot.

Stevens was solid over four quarters, didn't drop off at all but never really shone either.

Kerr looked buggered after not too long but racked up plenty of it and was a class above most others as you'd expect.

Cox seemed to be labouring for most of the second half.

What were your opinions on Hams game.

Sounded like he sent a bit of good ball into the 50 and was generally dangerous.

And how about Wilson. Were they trying to play him as a KPP originally because Butcher sounded like he was all over him with the height advantage and McCarthy just out muscled him?

Lastly McGinnes, did he present and mark as well as the callers claimed?
