I just have to say... who really ****ing cares if someone who plays AFL comes out and says their gay?

And coming out on the footy show??? please... worst possible arena going for announcing your sexuality. I agree with ODN... a small presser and then disappear for a couple of days while the AFL world goes into meltdown.

And to all the homophobic Carlton supporters... what are you going to do if it is a Carlton player? Is he suddenly less this week than he was last week or the week before? Are you going to cheer him this week while he is wearing the old dark navy or are you going to have a go at him because he is gay and wearing our famous colours?

Everyone is entitled to live how they want...

Dramoth, odds are overwhelming that there is a gay footballer at a few clubs. Not all will come out.

Estimates are wildly fluctuating as to percentage of the population that is gay. Anywhere between 0.2% and 10%, which is a huge discrepancy. One survey however had a low incident of homosexuality but some 20% of males had some kind of same sex attraction. That in itself would breed an acceptance so that is a pretty useful stat if correct.

Even allowing for drastically smaller numbers of gay men being involved in the macho world of professional football, you would have to think that the number would still reach around 1% being gay and 5% being interested in some way. You could guess and say that about 30 AFL players have thought about it at least.

That thought should be enough to remove the juvenile outlook towards this and bring about mature acceptance. Should .... not sure it will though.

Aside from the fact that homophobic men are more likley to be attracted to men than not.

That 20% of men that have a level of attaction to other men (without being homosexual) are probably prime candiates for homophobic attitudes.

Not wanting to stereotype but many of the gay men that I know are buff, sporty 'alpha' male types that engage in a lot of male dominated sports to begin with.

In other words, a arguement can be made that the percentage of homosexual males in a male orientated sporting environement would actually be higher than the statistic median.

I think i might know who it is from talking with various people, however i won't mention his name and i'm sure a few others here might know who it is.

Ah so it;s a he, that narrow's it down ;)

I like what your saying there Dram, I for one would not worry if it was Carlton player or players, unfortunately it is news, the first AFL player, as it was for Roberts, in the NRL. If this person wants to come out with all the bells and whistles, so be it, it;s a personal thing and it;s on their terms. However, another may prefer to go come out quietly..everyone is different, and footy is for everyone.

Very gutsy, would no doubt have a great support network around them, the time is nigh I reckon society has moved on and surely we;re all mature enough to handle it??

Is that a documented fact or some psychological profile in a paper somewhere? I know it gets used as a retort, but I am not sure that the most outspoken critics of things are those that are in denial themselves. A percentage probably as their own thoughts would disturb them but I am sure the vast majority would just be discreetly curious. Possibly homophobic if pushed on it amongst their mates maybe, but not counted amongst true homophobes.

It's all arguments I guess.

Gay men I know were either quite withdrawn and not typically masculine from a young age, or hang around in social circles through my hairdresser wife. Our exposure is obviously quite different. I don't personally know or remember knowing a gay man that liked sports to be honest. I'm sure I do but they just are not out.

From: Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal? J Abrnorm Psychol 1996 Aug;105(3):440-5, Adams HE, Wright LW Jr, Lohr BA, Departement of Psychology, University of Georgia, Athens 30602-3013:

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia.

The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire.

Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression.

Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

Some pretty good research indicates it may very well have some basis in fact.

Gyms are notorious 'beats' and homosexual pick up hot spots.

Wish I had the physique of some of my gay mates.

Some seriously good looking and buff dudes!

In which case they would never have admitted to it and could not form part of that 20% identified in the study I was talking about.

They would have to be over and above that 20%.

Unaware of yes, deny no.

Would also argue (but obviously can never prove) that more men would deny being atrracted to other men than simply just be unaware that they were attracted to dudes.

Like, surely you would know (on some level) if you fancied men right?

Unaware of yes, deny no.
Well it does say 'unaware of or denies'.

Are we suggesting there are vast numbers out there that are attracted to homosexuality in some way, but speak out against it? So they are basically self loathing which is another issue altogether.

I just don't see the logic in suggesting broadly that homophobes are more likely to be homosexual. Some maybe, but probably nothing that would mess with researched figures too much.

What do you think?

Why not Newman and Crawford will lap it up and make it cozy while Brownless will be a little uncomfortable at first.

How many gays does it take to screw in a light bulb?
One, as long as there's plenty of oil and he's real careful.

I'm such a bitch. ;)

Quite frankly, if it is going to turn into the Carmen Miranda spectacle we all anticipate,
it should be on the biggest radio show on the country I'd reckon.

What's AJ's schedule this week?

Double bitch ;)

Ha Ha was those straight guys metro sexual or guys always making themselves big and waxing their chests.

What do you think?

I lean towards the homophobia = repressed homosexuality line of thinking.

Its (counter intuitively) more logical when you think about it.

Experience with homophobic dudes leads me to suspect they have some form of insecurity with their sexuality in order to be so swift to judge other peoples.

If a homophobic man wasn't gay personally, then what else can there be to be scared or confronted about? Its not like your gay mate is going to force you to watch or join in or anything is it? And why the need to suddenly treat gay men differently just cause they are open about it?

Stright guys should be encouraging gay men to come out. A million more openly gay men in the world just mean more women for the rest of us right?

;)

I guess we hate and fear what we cant control, or don't understand... or both. And no-one wants to be vilified or labelled with what is (unfortunately) still a negative stereotype.

Its not an exact science, and there will of course be 100% straight men that are homophobic out of other reasons (strong religious views for example).

But the homophobic/ repressed homosexual stereotype seems to logically fit for mine.

Well I'm an openly gay man that moved from WA so I could watch Carlton play more football. I love football and have always played sports throughout my life.
I think society in general thinks that most gay guys are quite "girly" but I would have to disagree. Don't get me wrong i know alot of camp guys but most of "us" enjoy a beer and like watching the footy just like the rest of you. Most of my friends are straight and when friends of theirs meet me they're normally surprised to find out that I'm gay, maybe it's because I don't wear a feather boa and listen to Kylie's music! :)

Well said. You'll never cop red if you speak from the head - with cred. :thumbsu:

Haha! :D

I own the Priscilla Queen of the Desert CD but no feather boas here either.

Oh and I know there are no strict 'types' as such. The more flamboyant in society become the stereotype because they are out there so much. I just haven't encountered any gay men that are interested in sport. Sport (and beer) would be a great bridge for reconciling any perceived differences between gay and heterosexual men.

FWIW, I'd have a beer with you .... as long as you don't judge me for being hetero. ;)
