That's been our problem

After 1998 we've been within touching distance of success on multiple occasions, but for whatever reason we haven't been able to get there.

Whether it's bad luck, the club not being good enough or most likely a combination of both, we've not been able to take our chances despite been around the mark

05, 06, 12, 16 and 17 have been five genuine chances to win a flag, had we of won one or two along the way I think the club would be in a completely different position.

Oh yeah forgot about 2016. You never forget that round 23 disaster vs West Coast!. But at least they came back with hunger in 2017 and almost did it. But I think the 2016 team was better, just our ladder position ruined our chances.

If I was the coach after 2017 I would tell the guys the only way you'll learn from 2017 is come back with more hunger in 2018. But they decided to experiment and did it poorly, the camp happened and that was it.

We were making good progress in 2023 but then the goal umpiring stuff up and 2024 was destroyed months before it happened. Hopefully they have put 2024 behind them and look forward to a better 2025. Maybe the terrible 2024 could be a good thing?, we'll find out.

Thank goodness for 1997 and 1998 and if we win a 3rd flag we'll probably do it in unexpected circumstances as if I will be alive to witness it I am not sure, it depends.

1998 was amazing, it was team effort, it was the guys like Caven, Johnson, Bickley, Thiessen etc who really stepped up. Jarman and Smart were great and McLeod was superb in the midfield. Outmarked them, had more possession and took advantage of their poor goalkicking. But we could have had 3 or 4 flags by now.

We certainly would have not been complacent in the 2012 GF as huge underdogs. We could have beaten Sydney in the GF that year for sure.

If we won that preliminary final in 2012 I probably would have passed out from my celebration.

Not so sure about that given Sydney had pantsed us at home in the first week of the finals.

We were a genuine chance of pinching one in 2009 too had Rutten not held Anthony (Right in front of me).
2002 as well under Ayres.

Port finished top. We were 3rd. Both teams stuffed up first week so had to travel for prelims. Should have been all sa grand final

Semi flnal highlights - McLeod, Roo, Goodwin, Edwards in their prime. Stevens playing like prime Carey at CHF. McGregor, Beinkie, Burton, Bode, Ladhams dont sound like big names up forward but with that midfield it made these forward look good. Should have got 2-3 many flags in the 2002-2007 era.

If Ricciutio didn't stuff up vs West Coast with that hit that cost him a week we may have won that QF. Just couldn't get our hands on that ball all game. But still I thought we had a chance, the trip back to Perth was too much pressure for us to handle and we made many stupid mistakes under pressure and then the Eagles blew us away in the 3rd and there was no coming back.

If we had success in 2005 or 2006 and maybe even 2012 or 2017 we may have been a different side today. Underachieving has hurt this club badly!

No Roo cost us that 2005 QF, that was the year that got away.
2006 hurt too but in reality the wheels started falling off beginning with the belting at the hands of WC in Perth in R17 that year.
2003 will always frustrate me, close losses and blowing a top 2 finish by losing the last three minor round games.
Up to 2017 we averaged a preliminary final every 3-4 years which is no mean feat, but for a club of our stature though agree that we have underachieved. Especially in those Ayres years with that star studded midfield.

2007 -While Massie on Franklin was diabolical - playing a clearly unfit Roo was the nail imo
