As the Cats have been compared to the Bombers failed era until 5:15pm Grand Final day 09, lets take a look at what would actually be a combined side.

The Brisbane v Geelong comparison didn't last long so lets see how long this one lasts until the Blueser supporters rant about there great "era" of 2008.

Here's how it looks:
Backs: Enright, Scarlett, Fletcher
H/B: Milburn, Wellman, Mackie
C: Corey, Bartel, Selwood
H/F: Chapman, Lucas, S.Johnson
F: Mooney, Lloyd, M.Johnson
R: Ottens, Hird, Ablett
Int: Kelly, Ling, Barnes, Mercuri
(14 v 8)
Any obvious misses?

And in previous threads, Brisbane is still at the top of the list.

Apologies, poll added.

As for Jason Johnson, yes, should have been him instead of Mark.
Wellman still ahead of Egan. Mooney easily in best 22 of those sides.
Mackie v Hardwick and Kelly v Caracella I'm happy to leave as is.

My only major point of contention from a brief look is definetely Mooney, does not belong in that team in my opinion.

Essendon 2000 and Geelong 2007 teams were the most similar. Made to look better than what they were. Lack of genuine opponent in either year. Geelong has to considered better because they beat a genuinely tough opponent in a GF (and lost another). Bombers cruised in for the flag in 2000 but were soundly beaten in '01. '99 was what shouldve been.

OP's team lacks credibility as obviously can't avoid supporter bias. 10 years has made people forget just how good the Essendon team reallly was. Based on '99-'01 form, bold players would have to be considered for a position in the side.

B: 11. Damien Hardwick 31. Dustin Fletcher 1. Mark Johnson
HB: 21. Dean Wallis 6. Sean Wellman 9. Adam Ramanaskuas
C: 32. Justin Blumfield 14. Jason Johnson 7. Dean Soloman
HF: 5. James Hird 25. Scott Lucas 33. Blake Caracella
F: 2. Mark Mercuri 18. Matthew Lloyd 13. Michael Long
R: 22. John Barnes 24. Joe Misiti 26. Chris Heffernan
Int: 27. Steven Alessio 8. Darren Bewick 29. Gary Moorcroft 16. Paul Barnard

I voted Geelong simply because 2 > 1, but that should have no reflection upon selecting a side made from both teams.

Fair enough Donakebab, don't disagree with any of them and in fact considered Blumfield, Hardwick and Misiti, I didnt even remember Long (oops - but not sure how good he was in that period). But as this has stayed a fairly honest and not yet lambasted poll by other clubs, then I consider it close to the mark. Actually was more about a best 22 than who was better, and as one mentioned, if the Bombers won either of 99 (where you would have just needed to roll up you were that much better than the Roos) or 01 (which always could have gone either way), the poll could end up differently. If that makes sense!

I can't believe the Cats were being compared to that Essendon side, just cos they were going through a rough patch at the end of the year, I think it's pretty evident that by the results the Cats are a much better team, much much better

How did Chris Heffernan and Gary Moorcroft get in the team?

How did Chris Heffernan and Gary Moorcroft get in the team?

Heffernan was a very good player at Essendon, proven by the fact he played in both grand finals and for his country, the only reason we had to let him go is because we couldn't fit him in the salary cap. Not our fault Melbourne didn't get the return out of him that we did bot times he was on our list.

As for Moorcroft, kicked 68.37 in 51 games across the 3 mentioned seasons. Good figures for any small forward, can't disagree with that.

Are these sour grapes 10 years on, or were you too young to remember that both players were actually pretty good?

The main difference between Essendon and Geelong is that in our tough year we ran into a AFL designed super club that the AFL had determined were going to win flags come hell or high water. 2000-2007 were the easy ones. 1999-2008 were the chokes. 2001-2009 were the tough years. Kudos to Geelong and they win everytime as premiership is 2-1. No doubt.

Damien Hardwick Matthew Scarlett Dustin Flecther
Corey Enright Sean Wellman Darren Milburn
Jason Johnson Joel Selwood Jimmy Bartel
James Hird Cameron Mooney Steve Johnson
Paul Chapman Matthew Lloyd Mark Mecuri
Brad Ottens Garry Ablett Joel Corey
Scott Lucas Joe Misiti Blake Caracella Cameron Ling

I got 10 vs 12, seems pretty even.

Cameron Mooney is the obvious choice for CHF based on output for that 3 year span, but if you'd prefer to base your decisions on reputation and fantasy, put Lucas at CHF.
