This seems to be your answer to everything.

Problem is that contracts have to be at least 2 years and its the value of the contract of over the 2 or more years. Frontloading does nothing.
Its a pretty good answer.
Front load short term 2 years.
The rules are clear, this is the way you get your player within the rules if you dont have the picks.
No use offloading needed talent to get wanted talent or you are just treading water.
If you cleared lots of money in your salary cap use it

If you dont get him Freo pays more to keep him or he goes somewhere else for more money so he isnt part of the <money>success formula.
Go after someone else who is

Hawks are in the worst position trade wise so you have to go the mega-deal. You get the player but history says it never leads to a healthy culture having too much on one player especially one parachuted in.

It wont work if he gets silly money for ever not just at the front

Where's the Hawk mids under 30?

Where's the Hawk mids under 30?
You cant stop ageing champs wanting to be champs until the very last gasp
Its why they got JOM and ToM and chasing Fyfe and or a few others
but
At Hawthorn everyone runs through the midfield at some stage
Rioli, Bruest, Poppy, Gunston,Roughy, even Shoey has had a run through.I think Frawley may be the only guys who hasnt (yet)
Its not as predictable as the DangerDuck combo won a 3 pete doing it though

You got in two mid in and Vickery you lost your top 2 B&F winners for nothing and you lost outside run in Hill.

It is telling that the Hawks have had to sell the farm to get 2 risky mids in. Where are the Hawks 2nd tier mids? Why have the not stood up and taken the mantle from Lewis and Mitchell?

It's because they are shit and have been riding on the coat tails of the champs. You only have to look at the b&f to see that. Now those champs are gone and if JOM and Mitchell don't fire as you hope the Hawks are in massive shit. Your midfield depth is appalling yet you worry about our depth. Your backline is no better.

All you can do is cry about us losing two VFL Players for more than your two.champs.
The difference is we aren't deluding ourselves into thinking we'll still be in Premiership contention next year. We know next year is a development year. We've sacrificed short-term success for long term improvement - the exact opposite of Geelong's current list management strategy.

Geelong won't go close to winning next year's flag and will lose Mackie & Lonergan the year after - which means it'll have close the worst backline in the league AND one the worst forwardlines. The cliff is coming for you guys and because Scott has insisted on topping up instead of regenerating the Cats will fall hard. Even most Geelong supporters would agree with that.

Hope you enjoy next season because its your last roll of the dice until mediocrity resumes - but as a Cats fan at least you know how to deal with that. :)

Is that why you were visibly shaken and upset after Hawthorn's trade period. :D

Losing Mackie actually makes their backline stronger

Why do we even care about getting another first rounder? AFL won't actually do anything anyway, except possibly stopping us from trading future picks for a while.

Might be a good thing.
Mate, what they're forgetting is that Motlop is a free agent. Should he exercise that right our compo will be an end of 1st round selection.

With that and our 2018 pick there is no issues.

So they're worth first rounders still, eh?

It's amazing how you're still persisting with your stupidious call but it's not surprising coming from someone who thinks Ablett Snr was a career full forward based on '1' team named in an AFL record... It's amazing in all honesty.

But no, Selwood isn't worth a first rounder based on your opinion that 'nobody likes him.' :$

What are you smoking? I outlined reasons why you wouldn't get a 1st for any of these players from next year's trade period to compensate for the 1st rounder you need to bring in either next year or the year after. So no, they are not worth 1st rounders anymore.

And Selwood won't get you a 1st rounder when he'll be turning 30 in 2018 (the fact that he's a tosser doesn't help his cause).

It must be depressing that you have only 1 player on your list that will get you a 1st rounder at the trade table. Especially when you won't be drafting another 1st rounder this year, or next year. You guys are 1-2 years away from following North down to the bottom of the ladder.

But Hill has a lot more currency than Caddy, 3x premiership player and a year younger.
9 months age difference. and for months all I've heard is either he is the worst 3 time premiership player ever, he's a squib who benefits from getting cheap outside ball, or just because he's a premiership player it doesn't increase his trade value.

Maybe you can tell us how you'll get Fyfe when Freo match.
Simple, we offer our 2018 first, 2017 second and a fringe player. If Freo don't agree, he signs on with them again or goes to the draft.

If our guys are smart, we offer a short term (2 year) contract at a massive price (e.g. 2.8m or 1.4m a year). That should block Freo from matching. If it doesn't, he plays with them for 2 more years, and then he's unrestricted :)

FWIW, I don't believe we are in the running for Fyfe.

He won't get his 600k a year again as a free agent, so no the best you will get is band 3 compo (after your second round draft pick).

And I stated that I don't rate your opinion. In fact it's schoolyard and bang your head against a wall type for the majority.

'Nobody would give a 1st round pick to Selwood because they don't like him' is reason to exclude your opinion and any future opinion, from any serious discussions.
