Geelong on the top shelf for AFL premierships

WestCoast sit 11th on the premiership tally ladder, on 3.

Behind Sydney and North on 4, equal with Brisbane on 3, and ahead of Adelaide on 2.

The sooner you learn to accept it, the sooner you can stop creating these drivel threads.

Tl;dr
WestCoast = 11th

+1, it's laughable how some of these supporters of interstate clubs, can't grasp that the AFL and VFL are the same thing, particularly as WC won their first in the VFL

Not going to get involved with what the OP said, but what you said is not correct. The Eagles first flag was in 1992. AFL name change was in 1990.

Wallowing in mediocrity, unable to cut it in a brave new world ... stand up & kick arse, wallowing is not the sort of nonsense that typifies some (not all) Melbourne clubs !!

Reality is there are too many of them & they dont cut it.

Probably not worded well by OP, but what do we need to accept.

I know exactly where the WCE Eagles sit in the overall scheme of things in the AFL, and you know just as I do mate it aint 11th.

Agreed.

People hanging on to and living off past successes are unable to move on and create more success.
Rating Richmond a better club than West Coast is laughable.

Yes you are right, not sure why, but I was thinking 1990, but that was Collingwood, still the Eagles were members of the VFL, prior to it's name change, so they should realise that they didnt require a new licence as it was the same competition with a new name.

He did qualify it by saying AFL premierships and not VFL/AFL premierships. There is nothing wrong with talking about AFL premierships.

I just want that fourth.

Come onnnn.

Four flags over Freo means I'll never see the day a Freo supporter can say to me, "yeah but we have more flags man".

Other than that, this conversation is ridiculous, it's like the club you support and how successful they've been is somehow a reflection of how much of an awesome football person you are.

Geelongs playing list was built from rules of the AFL. Lots of clubs in the 90's won flags based on lists built from VFL rules.

Masssive difference.

Whichever way you look at Geelong = Class.

It's all one big wankfest really isn't it?

I don't give a crap about any of it. We have 3/5 flags and I am stoked about it.

I appreciate the history of the competition and love hearing about the Geelong team of 1951-52, but those flags cannot rate at highly as even 1 flag achieved in a national competition with 16+ teams.

Prior to the Cats winning run in 07, I would have been embarrased to go around saying we've won 6 flags so we are twice as successful as WCE because I know it would be an utter lie.

To give, say, the 1897 flag as much value as the 2011 flag is completely laughable. So laughable that anyone who argues otherwise is not an intelligent person. End of story.

mate I think your safe with Freo anyway lol :p

Yeh exactly.... I agree 100% with your thoughts.

Stupid thread.

The VFL vs AFL argument doesn't make sense unless you reset after each new club enters.

GWS enters next year, do we reset the premiership count to zero for everyone?

You happy with that Cat's fans?

1897 is more important because statistically it was much harder to exist then. These days, any man and his dog can join the league.

/flog of highest order

& your lot cant make it to the top shelf ...

Also rans, like North, despite being ADs teachers pet.

At last a Vic club, not Melbourne based, has joined the Lions & the Eagles with 3 flags in the national comp
Hawthorn have won four premierships in the national comp: 1988, 1989, 1991 and 2008

But if you think the national comp really began once the two South Australian teams were added, then Geelong have joined Brisbane with 3 flags, followed by Adelaide (2) and then seven clubs with one apiece.

What's your thing with this mystical 'top shelf'? We (along with Carlton) have won 16 flags, we're still playing in the same league that's existed since 1897, and you want us to just magically ignore close to 100 years of a league's history because it doesn't favour your case?

Sorry, but Green Bay don't claim that they're 4 time Super Bowl Champs, they claim that they're 13 time World Champs. Manchester United don't claim that they've won 12 Premier League titles, they claim that they've won 19 First Division titles. You and your imaginary 'top shelf' is nothing more than a flimsy attempt to try to claim your club as top dog. West Coast have had great success over the 25 years of their existence, but they joined our league, we didn't join yours. There's a reason East Perth tried to join the VFL in the early 80s...

Hard to argue, when SAs best joined the comp, ALL the best players were in the AFL, bar Gary McIntosh probably - it was a comp of Australias best footballers, not Vics best or SA's best or WA's ..

Then again you could argue Vics best were the best in Aus .. consider the Indigneous footballers not prepared to suffer the ignomy of the rednecks. Check out the Norm Smith winners to understand how sub standard the VFL was compared to the AFL.

If West Coast had of won any flags during their stint in the VFL I have no doubt you would be claiming those towards this.

Don't know about others but if we won one in the VFL I'd say we have 1 VFL flag and 3 AFL flags or 4 VFL/AFL flags
