Geelong - Too old, too slow?

The point is that if he’s the leading disposal winner in a reasonably performing team why they f*** would HE be the one copping the criticism?

Cause he’s a hack. You wouldn’t even get 3rd round compo for him. He’s a 34 year old list clogger for a team that should be rebuilding rn. If he plays on next year it’s a big mistake.

Wow, what a blow. A team wouldn’t trade for a player in his 16th season who doesn’t play a key position.

My goodness has there ever been a bigger insult handed down in football discussion?

What a blow to his ego

I don’t care about his ego, I’m just explaining why people criticise him. I’m not being biased Jack, Trent and maybe Edwards are also hacks that need to retire this year as well. We are both old teams, if you guys don’t try and bottom out soon you are in for a loooong drought. 11 years is getting up there already.

Also serious question, when do you think he should retire? And don’t say a cop out line like whenever he’s ready.

You’re not explaining anything. Literally ON THIS FORUM I’ve read Hawthorn fans say that he was Geelong’s best player on Monday. He was definitely a key part of the win over Collingwood.

Your level of criticism is on a par with that noisy bloke at the pub who sees a great player miss a goal or drop a ball and say ‘see I told yaz he was garbage and too ooooold.’

If he’s still among the best 1-2 players in his role at the club, wouldn’t the appropriate direction for the criticism be towards the players who are worse? It’s like pinning the cricketer who’s averaging below his career numbers but still producing better output than everyone else in his team

Whenever he’s ready.
He’s still easily in our best 22 so I really don’t care. If he’s no longer good enough to make us a better team than we are without him in it, then it’s time to go.

So? Cotchin is best 22 and was our best player against Adelaide. Pretty much all Tigers supporters still want him to go.

I don’t think your seeing the opportunity cost of keeping him, it’s costing you years of development for kids. If you were serious contenders I’d understand but your not. Sometimes it’s best not to hold on to legends of the club for just what they’ve done in the past. What’s sad is my way would get you to your next flag quicker but you can’t see that. From the sounds of it you don’t care if he plays till 40.

You can literally say that about ANY player that is keeping a younger player out of the team.

The absence of a 19 year old kid doesn’t get made bigger by the fact that ONE of the 7-8 midfielders being picked is 33.

His absence is the same no matter the age of the players being picked ahead of him.

What makes Selwood’s selection any more reprehensible than that of Duncan, Guthrie, Dangerfield, Smith, all of whom are past their peak?

The notion of playing or not playing someone JUST because of their age is beyond stupid

He gets the most flak cause he is the oldest. Anybody over 30+ needs to get a serious look at to stay at the club, only exceptional players like Hawkins, Dusty, Grimes, Danger etc can play. Selwood isn’t at those levels anymore. Notice how people are saying Hawkins should stay and Riewoldt shouldn’t, Hawkins is one of the favourites for the Coleman, so I’m not basing it purely based on age his performance is good enough.

I don’t care what you’re basing it on.

If he’s in the best 22 players at the club, he plays. Simple.

Yes because if we go through another few decades it will be because we picked Joel Selwood this season.

Take a breath and have a listen to yourself.

Him and his old mates have already started doing it

Selwood had 26 touches, 17 of which were contested (team high), and went at 89% disposal efficiency.

He also had 10 tackles (game high), 7 clearances (equal team high) and 27 pressure acts (game high). All on 71% game time.

Most of those stats are team highs, and the ones that aren't he's up there with the top few. He was their best player and is hardly holding anyone out of the side.

Aren’t they average stats apart from contested possessions? 1 goal assist a game is pretty poor. Midfielders are supposed to set up plays and scores. I think the average is 4-5 with the best players getting 10+

compared to the rest of the catscurrent midfield it is very solid
the issue is not selwood, its the recruitment and selection policies

the opportunity cost is better focused on players such as Dalhaus than selwood
