Geelong - Too old, too slow?

We beat a star studded Bulldogs midfield with our starting midfield being Bruhn, Holmes and Knevitt.
I'm confident those three along with Clark will form a star quality fab 4 midfield quartet for the next decade, with Clark being the best of the lot.
Why do people like you pretend like beating us means anything? We just lost we West Coast, who had only won twice in 21 games.

The Bulldogs are a broken club. You don't need a quality team to beat us right now.

Clearly you do. PhatBoy says there is no reason for why Geelong can't just top up with old guys and compete again.

I didn't realise opinions couldn't be diverse amongst supporters of a club. I guess if PhatBoy says something we must all think it too.

You do realise how ridiculous that sounds, right?

That's 18 players. It's not the same as West Coast, as we didn't completely avoid the draft for years while we were trying to compete. Is it perfect? No. Is it catastrophic and a deliberate strategy of trying to eek out every last drop of our current list and then being in no man's land for the next decade? No.
Interesting when looking at Drafts 2017 -2021 between WCE & Geelong players still on the list.

Geelong 11 - Miers De Koning Close Holmes Neale Conway Knevitt Willis Kroeger Whyte Dempsey
WCE 17 - Allen Ryan Petrucelli Oneill Foley B Williams H Edward Jamieson Edwards Winder Trew West Chesser Hough Bazzo Williams Clark

Wait, you actually consider top 4 finishes without a flag a success? That's pretty sad mate.
Relative success, yes. Newsflash - this isn’t the 70s, we aren’t in a 12-team comp where four of those teams are just too poor to win a flag. Clubs will only win flags once every 18 years, soon enough 20, so there is reason to not define every season as one success and 17 failures.

Yeesh, the four-timers really get under the skin of some. Imagine getting upset because the supporters of the reigning premiers aren't getting upset at their current predicament. That's what we're dealing with here folks.
No Geelong supporter should be upset at their club for the results this season. Perhaps being disappointed is understandable because any down season is disappointing. But I don’t understand getting upset.

Geelong did way more than enough to satisfy their supporters since about 2004 onwards. A very big achievement by them.

Falcon you need to stop creating accounts, its becoming incredibly sad watching how emotional Geelong is making you.

For a guy who claims to be a Merc driving, Camberwell house owning, gym rat, babe magnet and the CEO of Finance itself at the ripe old age of 21 I think you've got bigger fish to fry.

That's everyone on here isn't it?

I think you're finishing 12th. This is the worst premiership defence in history. Well done on another record, Geelong.

(You can still win this week and finish 10th, which would make it not the worst, just equal worst.) Big game, against the Dogs!
oh no the worst premiership defence in history, we'll all be crying into the cup :(

Such a Roby comment.
Oh no we're the worst team the year after winning a flag. Woe is us.

Next year will be even worse. You guys look slow all year. Next year you'll be older and also missing Smith.

We will be back in the eight.
Smith was dead set terrible this year. One thing about Chris Scott, he hangs on to players for a year too long.

I hope Tuohy, Stanley and Bews are also moved on.
Duncan was very poor but he had an injured interrupted preseason and should have one more year left.

Smith wasn't much of an asset this season in any case so won't be much of a loss next year.

Get games into the kids and see whether the core is there that will be enhanced by adding mature players.

In regards to the OP, even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes ;)

You keep saying Smith wasn't much of an asset but the problem is that you don't have many good runners, how is this going to improve in the offseason?

This season out 22 games, Geelong only covered more ground than their opponents 5 times.

Bulldogs are a lazy team. If you can't beat them around the ground this week, I don't see how the game hasn't moved well past Geelong.

You seem to care a lot. Thanks for your concern.

Geelong have some decent runners who, much like your kids were last year, were waiting on retirements. Ollie Dempsey and Mitch Knevitt are among the top handful at the club for endurance running and are just waiting on Smith and Tuohy to retire. Neale was an under 18s national athletics star similar to Holmes but in hurdles not running.

I have concerns about our young players coming through but ability to cover the ground ain't it, try again.

We just loving breaking records at Geelong. Highest score ever in VFL/AFL, oldest premiership team ever, Most All Australians in a team, highest winning margin in a VFL/AFL Grand Final, longest-ever win streak in VFL/AFL history (23 games), only Victorian team with a genuine home ground, and now "the worst premiership defence in history".

I think it's safe to say all premiership coaches hang on to players for too long. The loyalty they have to them is always enhanced after delivering premierships. Thompson did it as well, and Hardwick did it at Richmond. It's pretty constant.

Edit Richmond finished 12th in 2021.
So you have to go all the way back two years to see another team repeat the feat, and that's with us winning the premiership with the oldest named team in VFL/AFL history when no one gave us the slightest chance, let alone doing it on the back of a 16 game winning streak, oh the humanity. I mean this very thread has almost 100 pages and was started in 2021, look at the general consensus at the time.

Hawthorn in 2009 finished 9th - but went 9-13.

I’d have thought he would remember that.
