Gotta be the best rivalry in the AFL by a mile. It has been top class football, with a lot spite, emotion, passion and physical incidents. The way football should be played.

Since 2007, every match bar the 2008 GF, has been decided in the last 5 minutes of the match. It's not just recent either. These teams have had massive rivalries and a long history full of cracking matches and violent incidents through the 60s, 70s, 80s an 00s.

The AFL should seriously consider moving Hawthorn and Geelong to ANZAC day, as Collingwood & Essendon have played a lot of uncompetitive fizzers, and their rivalry is just purely manufactured. No heart, no passion and no real hatred between Collingwood & Essendon.

Whereas Hawthorn & Geelong is a true rivalry & encapsulates everything ANZAC day should be about.

What happens when those two teams head to the bottom of the ladder?

We didn't make the finals in 2009, the year Geelong won the flag. Still produced two absolutely cracking games of football, dare I say, better than anything Collingwood & Essendon have produced since their famous draw.

Hawthorn & Geelong really get up for each other.

Any combination of Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon are far greater rivalries and have been for the much longer than Hawks and Geelong (there are many more, just listed the big ones).

By your reasoning, West Coast and Sydney should have ANZAC Day due to that run in 2005, 2006 and 2007 of close games.

Ninth is not the bottom of the ladder.

Hatred and Violence... Right.

Nobody cares about those games anymore. Not even the Essendon, Collingwood & Carlton players. They look disinterested and often produce uninspiring football. Time is over. It's not 1933 anymore.

Hawks & Cats have played a series of crackers over 50 years.

Of the 4 mentioned, Ess v Carl is the most intriguing.

Theres the 1999 shock, and in 2001 when sheeds threw the richmond r22 game to avoid playing carlton in the finals

Look how disinterested these players are.

Completely uninspiring.

...Or leave it as easter monday?
No, don't do that, it makes too much sense.;):p

ANZAC day is too successful to change, any moron could see that the AFL won't change the Pies vs Bombers in the short term.

Easter Monday should become the annual fixture, or even round 1, Thursday Night to start the season, heck, we all know it would be better to watch then Carlton vs Richmond.:)

Greg Baum sums it up perfectly

"THEY did it again. They do it every time. Geelong versus Hawthorn is the best rivalry in the AFL, not predicated on hype or history, but organic....."

"SOME football rivalries need little explaining. Carlton and Collingwood are adjoining suburbs whose enmity has always seemed based upon class. The Magpies' blue-collar battle with Richmond has been a symbolic territorial stoush, with Punt Road and Hoddle Street the battleground.

Others just spring out of nowhere. The Hawthorn-Geelong rivalry is such a beast. It has cropped up in three distinct eras, each two decades apart. But the common denominator in each has been what makes the Hawks and Cats in 2011 the greatest rivalry in the AFL. The reason is simple: it's the football, stupid.
Geelong and Hawthorn have invariably lifted each other to greater heights, particularly on grand final day: from the Cats' slick unit of 1963 under the late, great Bob Davis, through the gladiatorial epic of 1989 and Gary Ablett's nine goals and the courage of Dermott Brereton, to Stuart Dew's flag-winning third-quarter burst of 2008."

By far the best rivalry in the AFL, bar none.

Yeah, you have been rivals since when, 2008?
Try 63.

But I don't care when it is, as long as we get to see it twice a year (and hopefully another couple of times in September!). One thing I'll say is the afternoon games seem to draw better than the night ones, so keep it on Saturday afternoon or public holidays.

Do Hawthorn & Geelong have a bigger supporter base than Coll/Ess.?
Money speaks all languages.

Go see a war movie on Anzac Day, if you want blood.

Yes and like the articles I provided in post #20, it's not based on being neighbours back in 1908, or what have you. It's based on football. I have never seen a rivalry stretching over 5 decades, with so much good football, hatred, passion & emotion.

All these old big four rivalries are so far outdated, and it's clearly evident when you see the players in a Carlton v Essendon game not giving a **** and producing B-grade football and effort.

Hawthorn & Geelong do bring out the best football in each other, and the worst behaviour in each other. Winning means everything and then some when Hawthorn & Geelong play. That's what football rivalries should be about. Not territorial disputes from 1905. Hawthorn v Geelong = Classic rivalry.
