Geelong v Hawthorn. Time to move it to ANZAC Day

Since 2008, each year my hate for Hawthorn abates slightly... which is sad. But it does allow me to enjoy the contests more, and actually enjoy watching Hawthorn play at its best. And the recent contests have been truly amazing games.

I think the thing that separates the rivalry at the minute though is that fact that each time we play each other the games are actually engrossing, and display the emotions associated with meaningful contests. Whereas ATM, the other rival teams and their games haven't. I don't think that makes it the best rivalry, maybe just the more active.

Its a genuine rivalry though, and we are lucky that our players seem to rise to the occasion.

Why taint a good, unforced rivalry by trying to manufacture something more extensive? Just enjoy the ride.

It would never replace Anzac day simply because down the line, when the games mean little in the context of the season, or the match up of the teams is completely unbalanced, the crowds will die back.

The current setup is always guaranteed a decent crowd, which means $$$.

Do Hawthorn & Geelong have a bigger supporter base than Coll/Ess.?
Money speaks all languages.

Go see a war movie on Anzac Day, if you want blood.

Hawthorn recorded record profits for a Melb based club in 08 & 09. Geelong are now a financial powerhouse as well. Both have massive membership bases, and Hawthorn have had a bigger membership base than Essendon since 2008.

Times are changing.

Look how disinterested these players are.

Completely uninspiring.

That's one cracking game of football surrounded by a whole heap of ordinary, uninspiring B & C grade efforts from Collingwood & Essendon games. Hawthorn & Geelong get up every time for each other and play games at a finals like intensity. Every time.

I truely hope this OP is a troll, either that or I hope he never has kids. What a crock.

Collingwood and Essendon created Anzac day, made it what it is. I love the thought that other clubs somehow thing if you throw them in there it will be the same. Laughable.

Make your own 'day', stop trying to ride on the back of other clubs success.

I personally think the season opener should be between two higher level teams with the hottest rivalry going in. And the entire first round should be structured as such.

No offence to Richmond and Carlton, it's still early enough days that they can't claim it exclusively.

So the ANZAC day game is to be played in Launceston? After all, that is where you get your money and membership from isn't it?

ANZAC Day hasn't been a success in terms of "pure" football, it has been a marketing success. Geelong & Hawthorn could easily draw 90k to the G on ANZAC Day, but they would actually provide a game of truly great football as well. Win - Win for the AFL, and a great endorsement for our great game, provided by two great clubs in Hawthorn & Geelong :thumbsu:

How about this be Round 1, Sunday Afternoon, every year. The reason why I say afternoon is that certainly Geelong fans don't travel in as bigger numbers as they would for an afternoon match (otherwise there would be more than 61K last Saturday, and from my perspective there were probably more Hawk fans than Cat fans for a Geelong home game), and for Channel 7 having this match at 3PM on a Sunday would be a great lead in for them into news. Plus as a Doggie fan, I want OUR club to be on Easter Monday against Richmond/St.Kilda.

Hawthorn v Geelong - the rivalry built almost solely on hitting people behind play. yeah lets encourage that.

Read the articles in post 20 where football "experts" say Hawthorn & Geelong games have produced the best "football" since the 60s over the last 50 years. These two clubs have so much heart and soul.

Nawww, we go to war to dance in circles holding hands while singing kumbaya with the enemy.

FFS.

Yeah because we really want to perpetuate violence and hatred...

Won't happen, even if it did would be changed a few years later as fans lose interest of seeing Hawthorn go down in the 4th after holding a decent lead time and time again.

Are you suggesting the AFL kill off football on Easter Monday?

HAD, strung a line out there didn't ya? :D

I have to bite.....

If you move Geelong and Hawthorn to Anzac Day you will destroy the event, because as soon as the performance of the sides drops, so will the crowd.

Quite frankly, in top form these sides will struggle to consistently gather the necessary crowd.

Collingwood and Essendon made this day (not Anzac Day, the event that accompanies), and no other team has rights, and only Carlton would be a viable substitute for crowds - even then, replacing one team would destroy the event as it has been constructed.

The Anzac Day game is Collingwood and Essendon; it won't be replaced as long as it draws crowds, and the natural passing of teams to younger generations will ensure that it remains long after you and I are dust mate.

Don't get ahead of yourself Hpyer. Your clubs membership is propped up by 9,000 Tasmanian members and after offering free give away tickets for every member 2 weeks ago, you could only draw 31,900 on a glorious Sunday afternoon game to the MCG. By contrast, Essendon drew nearly 34,000 on a wet Mothers Day V West Coast only a month ago at the Dome.
Also, for a match between 1st and 3rd last Saturday night, only 63,000 - a game where both teams were the home team?! Let's see Hawthorn in the bottom 4 again and see how they draw. Only last year when struggling you drew about 21,000 at the MCG Vs Power. Just keeping it all in perspective.

Truly definitive "evidence"

Hey I would say that Hawthorn & Geelongs last 9 consecutive games of football against each other in the last 5 years. Have been far better than the best 9 games of football Collingwood & Essendon have produced in matches against each other in the last 25 years.

I for one would be happy for the Cats and Hawks to play on Anzac Day.

It would be great for the people of Van Diemen's Land and Kardinia Park Land to have their own special day (alternating venues ever year), coinciding with the real deal.

Much like Yarra Valley Races Melbourne Cup Day!

I don't know why it has to be one or the other
