Geelong vs pies final should not be at the mcg.

Controversial opinion that interstaters won't ever understand but the MCG is the only true neutral stadium in the league.

1. Unique dimensions that allow for adaptable gameplans thus "only the best" win there. Teams rarely if ever "perfect" it. Richmond was an anomaly.

2. There's no "home ground" advantage insofar as crowds go given the size and rarity of "large" crowds (ie. 50k at the MCG is not the same as 50k at Optus).

3. History is littered with examples of non-MCG tenants winning finals there after only playing there a handful of times over multiple years

4. A win at the MCG for a non-tenant is not even remotely celebratory to the same degree as winning at the GABBA, AO, SCG, Optus, and even GMHBA. It's just "another win" ie if 1st (MCG tenant) vs 2nd (Perth team) play at the MCG it's a genuine 50/50 contest. Switch the match to Optus and the advantage to the Perth time is greatly in their favour.

5. If Geelong wants to play home finals at GMHBA against MCG tenants then they need to openly and vocally call for it. None of this "bUt wE dO aSk fOr iT". Specifically ask to play ALL home games against MCG tenants at GMHBA. Until the club does that it can stfu and deal with MCG home finals.

They do?

But Geelong or any other team don't earn home finals.

20-30 years back the AFL decided that interstate sides could play in their own state if they finish higher because it was impractical and unfair for those teams and their supporters to fly to Melbourne every week in September. Many people mistakenly interpreted this as a system of earning home finals.
This is incorrect, sorry. When Gold Coast eventually host Brisbane in a final, it will be at Metricon Stadium.

But geelongs stadium has better dimensions for football then the mcg. Its the mcg that should change. Its too circular and too short which results in too much boring circle work.

ps. The fact the grounds are different dimensions is just another reason why this game should be in geelong.

geelong earned the right to have the ground dimension and crowd advantages. Not collingwood.

this would not happen in europe or the states. we all know it wouldnt.
why do we accept it in the afl? I will say why. Cos it only really disadvantages geelong (and eventually gold coast if they ever make a final). So the majority simply dont care cos they only benefit from it.

A few years ago sydney rightfully claimed it unfair when they had to go play their home final against gws at homebush. Which was only 25 minutes away. Ironically most melbourne supporters supported their plight.

but when it comes to geelong and finals its massive cognitive dissonance.

it needs to be called out. This needs to stop.
The tears, they'd stop a drought.

GMHBA Stadium’s capacity will swell to 40,000 when the redevelopment is completed early next season and Hocking said the Cats had “a foot in each camp”, given they have a 9-2 split between games down the highway and at the ’G.

“I have a different view on that and so does the board,” Hocking said on 3AW when asked whether the Cats would renew their push for home finals at the renovated GMHBA Stadium next year.

“I’m really big on you’ve got to win finals at the MCG (and) we need to support our Melbourne supporters as well, which we have a big contingent of.

“Come finals you can’t be locking out a lot of people. Our final against Collingwood is sold out.”

asks for 11 home games in Geelong
happy with "up to 9"
okay with home final at MCG

lol

Where are they onthe ladder?

When did they last miss finals?

Cry us a river mate.

The extra 40,000 spectator $$$ makes the decision. Its an hour up the road and one of the best stadiums on the planet. PLUS the AFL did that long term dodgy deal playing the GF there for 50 years. So Geelong nor any Vic team wont be travelling interstate to play a GF in that period even when the other side earned it.

Just stop sooking.
No side earns a home grand final.

and we wont stop sooking until its changed.

the irony is mcg clubs sook if they have to play an interstate team 10 mins up the road at docklands.

Bahaha

Geelong v Carlton at CatPark
Carlton v Geelong at the G.

You cant sit there and say the advantage / disadvantage is equal.

Geelong play and train at CatPark
Carlton never set foot at CatPark

Geelong play almost as many games at the G as Carlton often it is 5 to 7.

Games at CatPark only allow a few thousand oppo fans in at best, v at the G Geelong can have 20-30k of their fans in attendance

Geelong play home games at the G, Carlton don't play home games at CatPark

If geelong v Carlton is a +1 / -1
Carlton v Geelong is akin to +0.2 / -0.2
Ofcourse its equal. 100 percent. Distance for fans and players to travel is exactly the same.

and your reasoning that Geelong has an advantsge cos it already plays 5-7 games at the mcg is utterly absurd. Those are all away games. If west coast lost 3 of their 11 home games at perth and was forced to play 3 of its home games at the mcg against melbourne teams you would now argue they have been given an advantage cos their 3 away games at the mcg now become like home games for them so they have 9 home games in perth and 6 home games at the mcg. It is the most insane argument ive heard in a long time.

Its only close to neutral on grand final day and when melbourne teams play each other.

the fact interstste teams sometimes win finals there is not in any way an argument that it is a neutral ground.

and if it had unique dimensions then that would make it less neutral would it not? To be neutral it needs non unique dimensions.
