Apologies if I have shared this story on this forum before, but with the passing of time it may now have more relevance...

A close acquaintance of mine spent some years in the AFL system as a development coach (not at the Hawks unfortunately) and many years back he attended an AFL coaching course with the likes of Mitchell, Buckley and Voss. He got to spend some time with each of them, bearing in mind that this was while they were still playing. Apropos of nothing (other than that he knew I was a Hawks supporter) he mentioned in passing that Mitchell had an absolutely brilliant football brain and he thought that Mitch would make a great AFL coach one day. He was also impressed with Buckley. As for Voss, he thought that Voss was absolutely full of himself, claiming that he was ready to coach an AFL side the minute he finished playing. Whereas both Mitchell and Buckley admitted that they had lots to learn about coaching and would need to spend time developing as assistant coaches before they would ever be ready for a head coaching gig.

Read into this whatever you like! Again, one person's views only, but over the years he has passed on some interesting tid-bits to me which have generally been pretty accurate and/or insightful.

Interesting story. So if Voss retired in 2006, does that mean in his first 4 years of playing football Mitchell was talking about being a coach? Or are you saying it was only when Buckley and Mitchell were still playing? When Nathan then retired in 2007.

Voss being arrogant with his footy doesn’t shock me - he was previously doing news reading in Brissy before becoming coach of the Lions. To not do his time as an assistant couldn’t be anything but arrogance.

That said, Vossy used to come into the newsagent I worked at during my uni days, and the owner was a mad Lions supporter. He was always nice and personable when he came in and didn’t mind having a chat with the owner even though she was clearly starstruck every time he came in.

Voss spoke to 360 last night about the times he thought he was so close to another coaching gig only for it to be taken away, and even said that same feeling of dread fell over him this week when he found out that Carlton had once again asked Clarkson if he wanted the job, while he was a long way down the path of the process.

What a great feeling it must give Voss to know they were still stalking Clarkson only days before they committed to him.

We've opened 2022 2nd last on the betting lines, so it seems we'll get zero respect from the football world and it'll be up to us to prove them wrong.

they’d be expecting the old ‘one step back, twoforward’

Sam didnt do that with Box hill, why would he with Hawthorn if he has some faith in the talent (he should have)

Crazy Vossy should be thankful he gets a 2nd chance just doesn’t really happen especially for a coach who failed the first time.
Gutsy move by him. Apparently both Queensland sides would have loved him as an assistant.

He is starting behind the eight ball because virtually all the decent assistant coaches are already signed and the expectation from their president down is finals next year because they are Carlton and their wonderful list.

Lost all credibility when he got his tip in the 2014 GF wrong by around a lazy 130 points .

Haven't you heard King's recent revelation concerning his tip for the 2014 GF - it was all due to a misunderstanding apparently..?

King's story is - Foxfooty rescheduled presenters at the 11th hour to undertake pre-GF analysis and King was asked to come in.
He missed most of the pre-production meeting and then as he was reading catch-up notes and heading onto the set, a staff member asked him for his GF tip so they could prepare the related graphic. King claims he quickly blurted out 'Sydney by 6 to 8 points'..!

Then apparently to his surprise, during the final segment when presenters declared their GF tip, the related graphic appeared; David King - Sydney 68 points..!

It took King nearly 7 years to come up with that plausible story and of course the staff member who allegedly misheard him would likely be long gone now...

Timely reminder that one of the AFL's biggest and best "experts" Gerard Healy, tipped Hawthorn once over the course of three finals series....in which they won 3 flags.
