Cyril is in great shape, he’s a proud man who walks his own path and has his own views. Your comment is ignorant and disrespectful and an example of exactly the sort of culture that he’s taking aim at.

Don't know Cyril personally, only met he briefly once.

A. Suggesting the club check on his/their welfare as a priority is not ignorant or disrespectful.
B. We've all posted messages after a night out on the sauce and deleted them the next morning, it happens.
C. Plausible reason/s for such public comments after 3 years should be the clubs second priority.

I wonder what Shaun Burgoyne thought about Cyril’s situation?

What are you saying? Carey, very early, called it correctly and Clarko said it was nonsense.
I'm saying I reckon it's more of an AFL issue in general. Perhaps we were denied games in Darwin by Gil.
Clearly the AFL did wrong by Goodes also.

I just can't see these comments as solely aimed at Hawthorn while Clarko was in charge his entire career.

You implied that he could have a drug issue. Would you have said the same if it was Hodge in question? I don't think that would be the case and that is the bias you need to reflect on and understand.

I assume Clarko would have known of any ill feelings from Cyril towards the club or any individuals.

If Clarko could have mended it he would have. I just assume he wasn't able to, i.e. it goes to a deeper issue than just Jeff
Clarko was such a massive advocate for the welfare of players, so you’d assume he would have thrown the kitchen sink at it. I remember him joking only a few years ago about getting Cyril back somehow, so it couldn’t have felt as grim about it as what it seems now.

Cyril’s life changed a lot when his father passed away, and perhaps through that new lens he looked back at his experience with the hawks a bit differently to how he felt at the time. Either way, there’s clearly bad blood, and I hope the club are doing everything they can.

No, that would posters looking to imply bias to my comment based on race. Hodge could be on anything, but he's not the one after 3 years who has suddenly decided to lash out at his former club - something is not right here...

This has been a known issue between Cyril and the club since he left. To the extent that he wasn't going to go to our NT game last year.

So why do you think that Cyril could be "on the gear"? What prompted you to come to that possible conclusion?

Will hopefully be asking you for tips in due course! My dad never forced the footy upon me but I fostered an interest when I was about 5 and went to my first game in 89 (league not Aussie rules mind you) and remember loving it from then on. Hoping with me being far more encouraging of enjoying the footy together that he'll take to it pretty quickly. He's already got his first mini Hawks Sherrin waiting for him - and thankfully there is no family influence to be anything but Hawthorn. I won't force the Raiders upon him though - that would just be very cruel.
I rekon once they hit primary school there going to be exposed to it a bit more out on the playground and that's where the interest will spark up hopefully. I'm going this year with him planning for it to be a game I'll only be half focused on if that because of the short attention span. A game against an interstate team with a small crowd would a good starting point. A big crowd against another Melbourne team the kid will freak out and cover his ears which he does when things get too loud.

No chance Clarko let this rot.

Not sure, from the sounds of things it was around for a while given that Jeff wasn't president for about half of Cyrils tenure. So either Clarko was complicit or didn't help, given his standing at the club - or Cyril and his partner are blaming the club for personal issues with Jeff or another individual.

None of this adds up.

Its no wonder he retired early. Its not Kennett its issues with the Club and himself. Sad ******* reality that we could have still had Rioli through the pandemic.
His Missus has been pulling the strings a bit from what I've heard. Has genuine grievances but seems like she isn't interested in coming together to resolve it. Just has a your better off without them style attitude. Just my 2 cents.

yeah you really aren't helping and coming across a bit you know. So I'd stop now if I were you.

(you seriously suggested he was on drugs - the whole problem is him!!! - I can't even)

Actually could the mods please take down that post suggesting Cyril Rioli is "on the gear" - I'm all for free speech but that shit is not helpful for this situation and so incredibly disrespectful to a legend of our club that it really shouldn't be tolerated. This man played in 4 premierships and gave us all so much joy and great moments.

You just reminded me that we took ear muffs for the kids and it worked a treat.

I'm not sure either, but something has gone sideways given their critical responses - check on their welfare ASAP is all I'm suggesting...

Someone feels slighted by their ex-employer = probable meth addict. That’s just vintage Bigfooty brain right there.

Its always dangerous reading into things but her post was interesting.

To me it read like ' way too little too late' and a bit of 'screw you' about it .

The club needs to be proactive from here , if Cyril or Cyril/wife dont want to sort it out well the club just needs to continue looking for resolution. Leave no stone unturned.

I assume part of the “Hawks for change”
Team are aware, as they’ve mentioned mending bridges with past champions.

Poison

I can’t speak to the circumstances surrounding Cyril’s comments as I don’t know the details beyond the rumours that have been mentioned here to go with what emerged today. But that is me personally - I don’t speak for anybody else in that respect.

A poster mentioned earlier the significance of Don Scott to this football club and its identity. What I will say about that is Don Scott deserves eternal credit for his enormous contribution to our club, both on and off the field. The circumstances of his elevation to Legend status clearly constituted a sore point between Don and the club two years ago. This was not something that should have ever been merely formalised as an item
of business at an AGM, but in a stand-alone forum that afforded him appropriate recognition for all that he has done for us. Without Don Scott in 1996, there is arguably no Hawthorn Football Club in 2021. Nobody should ever forget that.

It is very sad to think that these absolute titans of the HFC could ever feel disrespected by the club to an extent that they might now be said to be estranged from it. Obviously we remain hopeful that there will be an opportunity for constructive engagement with Cyril, Don Scott and other past players who have been made to feel unwelcome in recent times.

Whether that can be achieved by the Board as currently constituted, I’m not sure. Certainly, repairing these sorts of relationships is a longer-term H4C objective.

Already addressed my concerns for their welfare in a previous post.

What are these 'known issues' since he left the club..? If Cyril and/or his better half have a genuine grievance or claim against the club about a specific incident/s - let's hear it..?
BTW, related Chinese whispers from media grubs were and remain just that...

Ild never thought I would vote poison for the board! :)

It all comes down to people, if all his mates from the flags (including Sam and hale + Gunston, McEvoy and shiels) want him around the club I reckon he will but he is definitely slighted.

Hope sam addresses it behind closed doors

Media will get hold of this and there will be loads of press and questions, great start to pre-season. The club better be ready and if they have any control of big mouth at all, the response will not come from him. He should in fact not speak to any media at all and I don’t give a **** how that’s interpreted externally

I want an explanation, but the club won’t provide one to its members unless it absolutely has to. You would hope though, that they would NOW be working behind the scenes and talking to Cyril, because it does sound like there has been a distinct lack of communication.

it’s obvious in those messages, that he didn’t feel “safe” or “heard” at the club and that not enough was done at the time to fix the issue. The retirement was sudden and it does now seem that he was, in some way, severely disrespected.

Chad is a very outspoken, proud Aboriginal man, who is proactive in Community, at the club and won’t back away from the tough conversations. Love it or hate it, he has IMO been the one driving the cultural changes at the club in the last two years. This along with the fixturing could of triggered the anger. He SEEs them - why now and not then.

We are all guessing what went wrong, but united in wanting it to be fixed and fixed now but I’m not going to hold my breath because there may not be a path back

I hate to revisit the Don Scott legend saga, but the issue for Don was never that the stage wasn't grand enough - he just didn't want the club, or any fans, involved or at the ceremony. That's why he demanded it be at an ex player function or nothing. Every other club legend elevation has happened at either an AGM or season kick off, or a similar function that the club runs, Don wanted different because he doesn't want reconciliation and the club was right not to allow that.

You've deflected and not answered my question. Why do YOU think that Cyril might be "on the gear"?
