With Ratts gone, is the Ruff looking for a new job? I'd love to see him back at the club doing a player development and leadership role since we have lost so much senior experience in a very short time.
I know he's not a coach per se, but I think there's a number of guys on the list who could benefit from some mentoring based on how he played. Nash and Ramsden in particular as athletic talls.

I read abit of media today on my breaks, but struggled to find any reasons offered by the saints for sacking him. Best I got was “wanting a coach with a harder edge.” Anyone got any other insights as to why?

From memory they followed a good first half season of 8-3 with a poor 3-8. So maybe the club thought that was enough to send him off?

I remember when the sacked Malcolm blight because he was too tough on the players. Hard club to please 😂

I am hearing different reports. I believe we are paying somewhere around 600k
next year for Tom and Jaeger combined or around 300k for each.

12.5 is the minimum spend next year. We are going to need some creative bookwork to get near that .
12.5 is approx $300k per player

I heard a little of the president as I was driving.
My main takeout; with his plummy accent (with the benefit of “harndsight”) and slight speech impediment, poor old “Wats” didn't stand a chance.

Saints and Ross Lyon...

Was Ratts around when the alleged incidents occurred?
TBH I Couldn't imagine him ever saying some of the things alleged - I find him to be a pretty decent sort of human (which probably makes him less than ideal to be an AFL coach_

Yep, one of the reasons why Buckley didn't last

I have transplanted my off-topic response from the Draft thread, as to whether a club can take more picks into the draft than they have list spots available.

I’ve had a few goes at trying to find the rule. It definitely was the rule I just can’t find anything to suggest it has changed or not.

This is such bullshit. The AFL is such an unprofessional organisation that we have no actual idea what the rules are around this. I also see that they are already looking at closing down the Bowes loophole.....
Agreed. After opening the loophole specifically in response to Geelong's unscrupulous overtures, based on inside information via the AFLPA President and Geelong CEO.

It was calculated to allow Geelong, the reigning premiers, to steal a high first round draft pick. It was entirely predictable that the AFL would wave their hands around and feign oversight ('forcing' Geelong to send back a F2 pick, then allow them to ship out that pick and use a F3 pick instead) and then close the loophole immediately afterward.

Let it be said that the AFL are incompetent, corrupt and cannot be trusted to look after the game.

They permitted Geelong to cheat with Stephen Dank and Dean Robinson. And tried to hush up the Essendon drug cheating fiasco, before having their hand forced by the federal police and ASADA.

They have perverted the fixture and the draft far beyond what is necessary for so-called equalisation measures.

They have succumbed to the lure of easy yet destructive gambling revenue, and are doing nothing to change that situation. (Clubs like North are leading the way. Yes, that's right. North.)

They have employed a disgraced researcher to slow-walk and underplay the studies into the destructive and mortal effects of concussion on players.

But the draft will be so exciting, so everything's cool, yeah. Broadcast revenue blah, blah, blah. Nothing to see here.

I think it would be absolutely hilarious if the saints picked either Lyons or Hird

Don’t think they will ever win a premiership while I’m alive

From a couple of articles I read from him, his main interest is list management. He could go alright in that role. He couldn’t be any worse than Peter Bell or Dodo…

Could be seen as harsh on Rats but by the same token they never built on the 2020 SF, missed the finals 2 years running now. I think it's combination of list and coaching though, but as you often see the axe falls on the coach in these situations. Rats ain't a bad coach but he isn't a brilliant one, sadly for him he may not get another chance given it's the 2nd time he has been given the arse.

The biggest advantage Geelong are granted is their games at Kardinia Park.

They're the only Victorian side with their own ground. Meaning they're the only side in the competition with their own ground that doesn't fly interstate for most of their away games. And on top of that the ground is an irregular shape compared to the others. This kind of set-up is unprofessional at best, and wouldn't be allowed in any other league in the world.
