It's the biggest conundrum we face: hang on to ageing players and try for one more premiership or start the rebuild by pushing players out.
Would you accept a 4th followed by a few mediocre years?

Premierships are damn hard to get, despite what our club has done recently. If there is a chance of winning another one, you have to go for it.
Especially when we're going for 4 on end and another slice of history. As a result we may lose a Litherland but you can't
please everybody all of the time as they say. For the same reason I thought Lake deserved another year.

My favourite part of the interview was at the 2:05 mark. Nakia and Jacko have some eerie similarities.

Mike - "You whacked 3 blokes that day."
Jacko - "Doesn't matter, they were lookin' at me. It doesn't matter. It's irrelevant."
Mike - "You don't blame Leigh Matthews for what YOU did."
Jacko - "I don't blame any of the blokes I hit. They all had it coming. It was Hawthorn."
Mike - "You introduced Leigh to this discussion. You were rubbed out for 8 weeks for this incident because you smacked Chris Langford twice, Gary Ayres and Chris Mew."
Jacko - "Yeah."
Mike - "Well what's that got to do with Leigh Matthews?"
Jacko - "Well, they were Hawthorn. Look at the colours. Please. The most boring team in the league. And without... WITHOUT the umpires help in the 80's, they wouldn't have gone anywhere, right. They got everything. I went 8 weeks without a free kick in the 80's."

Struggled to land near the right minute navigating the playbar on my phone but in the process caught a few seconds of different parts that has ensured I'll be watching this in full this weekend. What a cracker. Would not surprise me if he is actually one of the handbag nut cases here on bigfooty.

In a way it's actually really sad that he's clearly let his hate of Hawthorn ruin the chance for any happiness in his life. A pathetic existence compounded further by being associated with Geelong.

RE: Lake

His retirement, and Hale to an extent, are why I think that Hawthorn's ambitions are other than #fourthorn. I think they are trying to achieve the legacy transition from old guys to young guys while not falling out of the top 8, with a stretch goal of top four. Any post season reward is just extra reward, from a performance metrics perspective.

I wouldn't be surprised if in their football department performance reviews that they are talking about performing too well. About relying on the old guard too much. I wouldn't be surprised to find they are considering whether they have missed transition goals by finishing too high.

I don't think they have done too well. Maybe naively I believe that they have managed the transition spectacularly well, primarily due to a phenomenal backline that anchors the entire game structure.

Not a chance. That neanderthal Jacko wouldn't know how to switch a computer on let alone type. A bloody sad individual he is.

This is the most pitiful, beta-male whinge I have read in a long time. "Oh, dear me! Skills at the edges make a difference for winning football! Just watch us take extra effort to the extreme and it will be horrible!"

There have been a couple crap article on The Roar lately. This one has made me remove them from my RSS feed. No time for beta-male posterior hurt in my day.

Pretty sure it's not a serious article?

So the original #freekickhawthorn

Possibly you're right. But I was already pissed off by the Roar's thin-gruel article a couple weeks ago writing off the Hawks followed by the teary post-Sydney #head&$@%ed missive.

So this one did me over. Anyhow.

Good post. Its always a delicate balancing act retiring our great players with harmony. I'd hate to see one of them go play an extra year elsewhere
to end their career but don't think that would happen. We are sixth for points conceded which isn't great, isn't bad. Would be better with Lake and
a better functioning midfield. We can never finish too high and in retrospect our form suggests we are at best about fourth by end of year so
ladder wise we're going to finish higher than expected. One reason is we've won 4 games by 10 points and under this year as opposed to losing
4 games by 10 points or under in 2015.
We have blooded a heap of new talent this year too which is great as they're learning from the old blokes so we are transitioning albeit slowly.
I certainly didn't think TOB and Sic would be playing so much this year so thats a good sign.
We definitely aren't top of the ladder material by 2 games clear but then again neither is any other team. This won't be lost to Clarko and
his staff as the battle continues.

I think the club would be happy with where we are, they might want more out of the kids but its not like they are going to be upset about winning games.

To be fair the kids that have come in have played their roles pretty well, Sis has been above what you would expect and Brand is looking better than his games total.

We've had a lot of players in the front half work together to pick up slack and the club would have been counting on Rough and Schoey to be fit as well as Fitz and Spang to have been able to play at least at box hill. Considering that we have done very well.

I think if the club was worried about anyone it would be players like Langers who hasn't taken that next step, Hill though I think they have worked out how to manage that one now and he will be right for the rest of the year, and maybe your Willsmore/hartung types who haven't maybe progressed as the club would like

Am I the only one hear that thinks that the Jacko interview and his behaviour was all a put on? At times he could even stop himself from laughing at what he was saying.

At times I thought it had been rehearsed too. No human could be that dumb, could they? If they ever think about a sequel called, Dumb, Dumber and the Dumbest, that bloody individual "Jacko" surely would get the dumbest part.

This one is better http://www.theroar.com.au/2016/07/29/are-we-all-in-denial-about-the-hawks/
I especially like the points from kick ins. We've apparently only allowed 8 scoring shots all year from a kick in after a point and that adds up to 23 points allowed, only one of them in the past 8 wins.

That says as well as leading the league in turn over conversion we are still very hard to move the ball on and score against when we have our zones setup

Maybe some put on stuff and real stuff too but Jacko's always got an angle on things and it always involves money.
He'll probably get another 20 sportsman's nights out of it till years end even with a head like a half eaten pastie.

Brisbane youngster Sam Skinner was named to make his debut this weekend then ruptured his acl at training. It's also his second acl injury.

That is rough. So close to playing AFL and this probably rules him out for all of next year too. Gotta feel for him.

That's awful - life can certainly throw some curveballs

True, the flipside though is that he doesn't have to play for Brisbane this year or next year, still footy is a tough gig sometimes

Still hasn't generated the emotional overdrive any injury at the Bulldogs seems to create as yet.
Training track injury, interstate bottom of the ladder club for a debutant. It's only got as much news as it has because he was selected to play then pulled out due to the injury.
