Those that wanted Maynard suspended because Sicily was, isn't justification for bad decisions to be accepted.
It is not a matter of wanting Maynard suspended because Sicily was. It is a matter of an extremely reckless play that left Brayshaw concussed. Using Sicily as an example of other poor decisions does not make any difference. Maynard should not bother buying lottery tickets for the rest of his life as he has used up all his luck.

I guess Angus can crack open the bottle of wine now, eh?

Extremely poor decision by the tribunal.

Look if this is what it takes for the tribunal and the game to realise this is a contact sport and that sometimes accidents happen then I am happy for the greater good. We can protect the head without rubbing everyone out for coming near a concussion.
I get what you're saying and appreciate the sentiment, though the stench of double standards is overwhelming with this one. You can't seriously believe the Maynard incident would be dealt with similarly in the guts of winter, with a bye and games against North and the Gold Coast coming up.

What a mess the AFL has created. I can understand both arguments being made, and I don't really have a clue. What I can't understand how the AFL can apply that reasoning to Maynard but not to Sicily. I also don't have confidence that all players would have been treated with the same verdict tonight. Would Greene or Sicily have gotten off for concussing someone after launching off the ground?

If trying to spoil the ball is wreckless we may as well turn the game into AFL 9s.

The inconsistency is absurd, sure. But I don’t want to see Maynard possibly miss a grand final because I’m still angry about the Sicily decision. Hoping this decision starts a precedent. It might not, but I can live in hope.

I can though. I am being impartial. There have been so many clownshow decisions at the tribunal this year that I am glad one of them didn't cost someone a shot at playing in a grand final.

Hopefully the new brains trust can come together and rationalise over the off season how to adjudicate actual malicious acts and on-field accidents and come up with more outcomes like that tonight.
So the reason Maynard has gotten off is because it wasn't deemed a tackle and the reason Sicily got 3 weeks is because his was. FWIW I don't think Maynard should've been suspended but this just makes the Sicily incident sting even more and quite frankly the AFL can impartially suck on my nuts.

If it does, and for the greater good of the game moving forward, then yay.

Do you consider it possible the AFL's handling of this Maynard incident has been compromised by its context & potential ramifications?

Exactly, I was pissed Sicily got done. Someone else getting a shocker doesn’t make that more palatable. I’m still pissed Sicily got done. I’m happy Maynard’s didn’t make it 2 shockers.

It's not just because Sicily was, it's because consistency is important. If you're going to judge things a certain way at the start of the season and it's bad, take your medicine and continue doing it - don't backtrack and start ruling on incidents differently without any rule changes just because finals roll around and you're afraid of backlash.

It's like the Cotchin incident back in the day, with his bump on Shiel - that was the season where 3 fines was a week's suspension, Hodge got done on it, Cotchin had 2 fines and his bump on Shiel was probably worth a week but not only did he not cop a week he completely avoided a fine. They got rid of that rule at the end of the season but it didn't mean anything because they didn't even enforce it when it mattered.

Own up, admit you have the rules and interpretation wrong, change them. Don't just ignore them when they're inconvenient.

If you’re now expecting consistency from the AFL then I have a bridge to sell you. I like your glassy eyed optimism though.

Looking forward to every legal team quoting this in various other matters in the future: “duty of care… is informed by what is reasonable, not the expectation of the remarkable”.

FWIW if that was applied to the Sicily case - he gets off 100% of the time without a doubt.

I’m sure the AFL are happy to wash their hands of it though…

Good reading tonight was the biomechanical expert dispel all the armchair experts lofty tales of being able to alter your course in mid-air and elect to bump after failing to smother.

Interestingly the AFL didn’t even try and make the case of the latter.

Straight sets coming up.

Weird shit.

They're probably have the most talented list in the AFL with the strongest depth.

I know poor kicking for goal is bad footy, but other than that they were almost the best performed team in the first week of finals.

Would be a disgrace if they go out in straight sets. That list should have been in more than 1 grand final by now.

Jack Martin downgraded to a week...

Im not fussed that Maynard got off - I was sitting firmly on a picket, because I respected what both sides bought to the discussion.

What I do find amusing is the thinking that this is breaking of a new dawn, “yep they got the Sicily one wrong, but glad to see common sense prevail here and hopefully this carries through to next season”

What planet are we living on, outcomes changed week to week - it was so confusing and yet here we are thinking this is a positive for moving forward

Weird
