Maybe about the list, but not the coaching group. Collingwood's coaching is a large part of why they're Premiers and Melbourne are not.

I agree. I feel there is an out of control group running that asylum. Goodwin is an animal on the turps and i feel he can't hide it.

McRae is a leader of men.

They lost by a kick after kicking 5 behinds, and coughed it up late.

McCrae is a genius at team building and generating belief. There is nothing special about their game plan other than that they all believe in it. It is almost like a cult.

Melbourne has star power, but like the Giants under Cameron they play as individuals. The old saying ‘a champion team will always beat a team of champions’ perfectly illustrates the difference between Collingwood and Melbourne.

Imagine rocking up to work at Melbourne, few on the crystal pistol, may will bash you, coach is a degenerate doesn’t even know your name and gawn giving you as much positivity as a juicy fruit - the fact they got so close to a premiership with the culture they have shows how low the standard of the comp is atm

May was right.
May was 100% right but you can't say it without looking like a sore loser. Melbourne have the strongest list in it and simply should have won, but they didn't. They've underperformed every year since their flag.

Collingwood spent large portions of the season like they did last year scraping wins. Their backline is shaky under pressure, their midfield is old, their forward line lacks any genuine star power. Strong case for the weakest team in the top 4.

Great teams don't scrape wins, but McCrae has them playing with the confidence that has them almost unbeatable in any game in the balance come last quarter. Teams couldn't put them away, they got ran over, Collingwood won the flag. Even as they finished 1st on the ladder it still felt as much like a stolen flag as the Dogs was from back in the bottom half of the 8.

Instead of lamenting not winning, Melbourne should learn a thing or two.

100% May didn’t think his end of the ground let them down. Got a miserly defence…..similar to Collingwood statistically

The pies may scrape wins but over two seasons have beaten more top 8 teams than just about anyone

Melbournes problem bar the non functional forwardline is the coach .
His off field erratic behaviour has rubbed off onto the players .

His pressers in the last month were embarrassing . Calling out Finn , the maynard incident .
While he is there preaching to players but not living they it they arent winning it .

Intentionally done to drive him out, do you reckon?
Doesn’t matter. That’s awful. You don’t treat people like that unless it was aligned up front as say a teaching tool for the younger group, where a leader makes an example of themselves for the greater good. That in no way is leadership and it’s not the sort of behaviour I want our club to engage in. Congratulations Tom as a much decorated player of our club and most importantly now a thoroughly deserving premiership player at another.

Not good.

Good on Tom winning the flag , played a cracking grand final

Worth noting this is his recollection of that meeting and event . If he felt on the backfoot it may well have magnified his recollection and feelings .
As a senior play no doubt he was used as an example for learning . Its professional sport .

I would be a bit careful for criticising the coach , club etc of the forcing him out .

Not good.

In fairness to the coaches, this is Tom's side of the story. I don't think the coaches, Sam in particular, would resort to just playing clips to get the message across - he was probably told multiple times over multiple weeks not get drawn in to the contest, or to maintain his position relative to his opponent, and he didn't so they made an example. I'm sure we can all admit that Tom getting sucked into the contest was a source of frustration for all of us at times. As a senior player he needs to lead by example and do what is expected of him. He wouldn't have been targeted for nothing just to get him out of the club.

Could it have been done more tactfully? Sure, but it does seem a little precious to me.

Might be the wrong thread - sorry.

Truth is somewhere in the middle.

'Toxic work environment' is WAY over the top. It's elite level sport. Standards are driven in a much different way to your regular workplace.

It also may have been tough to single out an experienced individual that many times. There's every chance it was being done to prove to the young players that nobody will get a free pass. However, a heads up could be a good idea if that is the approach.

And, if we're suggesting that Sam Mitchell is the one leading the match review, then we need to remember he was a coach in his first season and was likely to make a mistake here and there.
