What I can't stand about the Tom stuff is the indignation from Collingwood fans, none of whom rated Tom at all prior to him getting to the club. They also benefited from a list management strategy that pushed established guys like Treloar, Stephenson, Grundy and Phillips out of the club against their will, not at all different and in some cases worse than what happened with Tom. At least we didn't act all rainbows and butterflies with him before sending him packing in the last hour of the trade period like Collingwood did with Treloar.

One team won the trade and it wasn't us.
I think our BnF results are proof that we did. Day, Newcombe, Nash and Worpel all top 4. As good as he had been for us, he needed to go.

Yeah spot on. In this day and age it’s so hard for clubs to manage a player like Toms situation last year. On one hand you’re trying to look after your player, while also keeping in mind you don’t want to devalue a player so much they’re worth nothing in a trade.

Ofc feel for anybody who’s finding their work environment tough, but big pays equal big responsibilities.

We got nothing in return.

Chances are all four were going to have vastly improved season whether Mitchell was here or not, he was already making way and Sam clearly had plans to build around the four you mentioned.

Must be bittersweet for Tom to reflect on his footy journey and for it to culminate the way it has. He was fantastic on grand final day and I like to think most supporters were happy for him.

Shame we were on the decline as he entered his peak but his departure has been a boon for our young midfield and he’s now a premiership player. Reckon he’d be stoked to see his former team mates enjoy similar success in future.

This following on so closely from that “scandal”, regardless of how supporters want to push back on Mitchell, this is not a good look for the club

At a time that many are questioning why we are missing out on targets, maybe there’s still a fair bit for the club to do on how the club is viewed externally by players and managers

Or its a reflection on Tom Mitchell who was pushed out of two clubs

Wow. Surely not.
Swear to God, you'd better not act all indignant about this after 12 months of thumbs-downing any suggestion Clarkson mistreated Indigenous players.

Dissapointing to hear... we can do better than that.
Do better than what?

Expect players to stick to a structure but when they don't, just say ah well

Its a senior line meeting, not an U13 Sunday game

Tom loves it his own way, sooks up when criticked

Its not the first time, but I guarantee he wont bring it all up

everyone quick to be defensive re the club

sounds like he could've been coached & critiqued a bit better last yr... yes it's a brutal game but it's not a great way to treat a player like Tom. His game didn't suit us anymore & all good he moved on but sounds like a few aspects of how he was treated were pretty unfair. not needed. Tom comes across as a bloke that could take criticism

Not good.

I think sam did a few things that sacrificed the likes of tom for the betterment of the group. Stripping leadership roles, playing him off the hff and using him as a target to spare the young players all appear to be designed to help the young players but it comes st the expense of tom. You would hope sam had private conversations about this with him to help him understand the method. But it wouldn’t be a great feeling to be the only one singled out for feedback in a team sport.

I will defend the club when someone uses their own podcast to try and throw mud on the club for literally no reason
Celebrate your flag, be happy in your own accomplishments and be self aware enough to focus on that

Its been consistent with Mitchell all year, needs to mention Hawthorn in every second interview
Unfair?, its a line meeting where he admitted he had not followed the structure properly

He needs to move on

Ok the comments i have seen from ppl here are 100% accurate. Mitchell doesnt listen. Many times last year he was pulled up at training for being out of position even when told to go to a player he refused.

He does his own thing. It was an ongoing issue. It doesn't sit well when ure trying to teach the youngsters to play as a team to defend when one of your senior players just refuses to do it

So what do u do if the behaviour is repetitive. I guess they could drop him right. Football is a team sport. I am guessing he was probably subbed at Collingwood for exactly this reason

Yeah it’s really poor form from Mitchell. There was a lot of similar stuff when he was traded from Swans to us so he has history.

It feels a lot like he is trying to justify why he was flag chasing at the end of his career. You would think he would sit back relax and enjoy. Using Andy Otten to help justify things further makes it look even worse.

The fact he was never considered a leader while at Hawthorn when we were crying out for some says a lot.

Following on from what i said the reason for the focus on the videos on Tom is obvious. If not let me spell it out. The game probably had several players not to keep to structure just like Tom but their actions were through inexperience and ignorance. Tom's actions were deliberate and repetitive through every game prior

fair enough I trust your take on this. also see billyc post above

Teaching/coaching by humiliation very rarely works. Whether Tom deserved constructive criticism from the coaches doesn’t mean that’s an effective way to communicate.
So what? Continue to try to tell him what he needs to be doing and have him continue to ignore it? He wouldn't have been blindsided by this treatment, it would have been built up by continuous disregard for game plan as many have said. He's being inordinately precious about it, and as a senior player, Brownlow Medallist, AFL MVP, AA he shouldn't have let it get to that point.

I employ a lot of people. Some need constructive criticism and teaching. Some need to be managed out. Humiliation never works, and is toxic. And in this instance, it clearly didn’t work, as it very rarely does. Hopefully those responsible learn to move on from these 1990s methods.
