I have a bad feeling that the AFL's punishment for Finlayson is going to be an absolute joke. The media discourse around it has already been disgusting. Can't claim to be a safe space and host pride rounds and then not come down hard on his comments.
That did nothing with Clarkson and his history. When he made similar comments this year.

Hasn't been publically reported, but all reports, and Finlayson's own comments indicate that it was quite bad. Regardless, the point is that the AFL can't be tolerating homophobia, and should be giving out a punishment in line with their messaging during pride round that footy is for everyone and that there's zero place for homophobia
Supposedly called a player the homophobic slur starting with f.

i’m 100% anti homophobia and use of that word but benchmark for a penalty is tricky.

There is a clear difference between the word allegedly used and the clarkson indiscretion. Clarko used a word that rightly or wrongly has been used more broadly as an insult - it was careless and reminder to think before spraying. He rightfully got a whack for it.

if this incident was the ‘f’ word, that is more aligned to use of the ‘n’ word in a racial context. But parallels to the tex incident depend on the recipient.

Calling me a ‘n’ is bad as use of the word is socially unacceptable, but it’s not even in the same ballpark as using that word as an insult to an indigenous player.

So was the player in question was being vilified based on his sexuality, or was an unacceptable word used as an insult against an opposition player?

former is very bad and multiple weeks per tex, latter is somewhere between that and clarko a fine, but probably closer to the clarkson end.

I think we should wait until the AFL hands down a punishment before we jump the gun and be concerned that it may not be an appropriate ruling .

I also hope Finlayson doesn't get hung out to dry here. Everyone I dare is pretty aware of his family situation.
He also did own what he did/said and reported himself in.
Doesn't make it better but at least he acknowledged it rather than being 'caught' and playing the I need to be better card after the fact .

In no way excusing what he said which was clearly and obviously out of line.

I don't think whether or not the player targeted is actually gay is relevant to how they should handle this.

That would require some level of verification of who it was directed at and their sexuality which is none of anybody's business.

And I'm certain there would be plenty of players (even Finlayson's teammates) who could take offence to a term like that being thrown around. They don't have to be gay themselves. They could have family and friends that are gay. Dylan Moore's sister for example, I doubt he'd be ok with hearing homophobic sledging. It would probably hurt even more hearing that from a teammate.

Have to admit i’m starting to lean this way too - particularly with the aflw lens. I still think there is a distinction but it’s marginal.

Ironically it was robbo who got me thinking - was reading his daily drivel waiting for my coffee and he did make a very good point … what if i decided to use that word to insult a (non-gay) workmate in a corporate environment. Be in front of HR quick smart and rightly so.

He should get weeks.

A Victorian club hasn’t turned its back on the possibility of pursuing admonished North Melbourne player Tarryn Thomas this year

Geelong, who afforded a third AFL opportunity to now-All-Australian Tyson Stengle, has been touted as a potential landing spot for Thomas.

If there’s a way to go from being universally hated to universally loved and everyone forgetting your sins it’s to go to the arrogants - absolute media, umpire and football world love fest down there at Geelong

Very, very good PR team at the cattery. They've loved up the majority of the media "peraonalities," to the point where it's everyone else's fault when their players bugger up.

The Bombers abysmal performance against Port has dragged Herbatron out of retirement ... again

Only Bombers supporter I have plenty of time for - absolutely glorious. Also beggars belief we didn't beat this mob, some of these clips are just woeful.
