GC aren’t going to win away games though so better pies lose - we also play them so then we would just need them to lose one extra match than we do

Yeah don't disagree. Their percentage isn't great so they need to keep winning also. The vulnerable teams are the teams with poor percentage.

Freo are a pretty good side and will play finals.
Melbourne record is poor but they will have earnt their spot.
It’s going to be a logjam around the lower half of the eight this year and we’ll probably just miss out but that’s ok.

That’s not an all star game. It’s not the best 22 players in the world. The World Cup is also never the very best teams in the world - the qualification process almost always throws in a handful of lowly ranked teams that make it at the expense of quality outfits that should be there. There’s plenty of sports that don’t have ‘best vs the best’ matches behind Aussie Rules.

The conversation has derived from the state of origin discussion which doesn’t necessarily literally mean ‘best of the best’, but certainly an assembly of the best ~10% which is what our code misses. World cups throw up anomalies but typically the best nations have their best players and seeing them together is often amazing, thrilling and even bizarre but fascinating.

I don’t think there’s really a solution either, just think it’s a shame.
