To the professionalism/wages of the players more than to the rules though, there's only so good a player can get, and only so cohesive a team can get, when its not their full time profession.
Agree, I want 18 on field though I think it'll help even if it's a depth issue.. I like the AFLW more than I thought I would tbh.

Interesting comments from my accountant's receptionist the other day, ie ` she wouldn't let either of her daughters play Aussie rules because there were too many butch lesbians involved,' and she followed that up with, `she knew numerous women who shared her views,' and I suspect there may be some truth to that 2nd comment.

Just in case anyone wants to get their flame thrower out , that is what she said!

What a funny story. I mean, it was tex. Calling another person tex.

Madness!
As that was a quote from Sarah Perkins, "he was calling someone else 'Tex", not "he was calling me 'Tex"" I took that to mean that what Sarah meant was "he was calling someone else, not me, 'Tex"". Maybe I was being a bit hard on The Big Texan.

It does beg the question though, will Sarah Perkins receive a cease and desist notice from The Big Texan's lawyers?

They could go for 20 minutes more and they would still be low scoring games. It's not the length of the game that's the issue, it's the quality of the play. It's like watching the worst of a Ross Lyon coached team play in the mud, yet it's a dry day. The tackle count seems to be at the level of an AFL side, so what does that say about how they are instructed to play?

I love the commentators trying to talk it up too.

They can win as many of these premierships as they like and count them all. The standard is so mindbogglingly poor that it's ten times worse than winning the SANFL reserves competition. Hope they do win it, because then their expectations for their lovely boys will be through the roof and will be more enjoyable to see crushed when real elite football - not the relative elite football that the commentators are talking about - starts.

I get you don't like it and don't want it to work but there is no need to go all attack dog.

I was merely pointing out the quarters are shorter.

I think 1 problem with the women's game is the girls are too fit for the skill level. They play at div 7 amateur level, Probably worse, skill wise. However their fitness is seemingly top level hence the pressure that is being put on all around the ground is too great for their skills to handle. Turning it into a real continual scrap. If they were like amateur league players and had zero fitness then the ground would open up significantly and the play would be far more fluent.

It's not that I don't like it and I do want it to work. It's just gonna take a long time to get there, that's all.

If you want it to get better, pretending it's more than what it is isn't going to make it happen. At the moment it's like they are getting a gold star on a participation award. The more people praise the game as it stands now, the more the coaches and players will be validated for playing a contested scrap instead of actually playing the game properly IMO.

I only watched the last quarter of the Adelaide Carlton game because I was wanting to see the JLT between Sydney and North, but there were a few players who seemed to be playing well and were hitting targets. That needs to be the baseline standard for admission to the competition - I personally think 8 teams was way too many for the level we are at with women's football at the moment. But I understand why it was done.

They should shorten the field like they do for mini league games. I remember having to play over the full length of aami stadium and you would be lucky to get a goal.

I agree as I think full sized playing field is too much for the girls to handle and 4 goals in a game played under fair conditions is testimony to that. Women play under abridged conditions in many sports so changes need to be considered. I think if the quarters were slightly longer and the field shorter the contest would probably be more appealing. Maybe as the competition develops and the girls' fitness and skill levels improve the playing arena could be changed back.

Yep 8 teams was too many. For many months the talk was for 6. WA and Qld were always going to get a team because they do well in the national championships each year, plus have big participation numbers and Melbourne and Bulldogs because of their promotion via those exhibition games so that was 4 that were guaranteed. NSW has been in Div 1 for years, not as strong as WA or Qld, so they were likely to get a team. So where was the 6th team from? The AFL wanted a big presence in Victoria, so Collingwood was a no brainer. But the AFL decided they needed 4 teams in Victoria not 3, so they had to add an 8th team.

I've been wondering if the 16 players per side set up (instead of 18) has been having an impact on their ability to move the ball across the field.

Sorry mine was a serious question.
I was surprised that we weren't afforded the same handout as the criers for our women's development. Never mind, the whole way the women's league has been rolled out leaves a sour taste in my mouth so I'm not even following any of the AFL teams. Should have been joint criers Port AFL women's team or else a totally independent one imo but, meh, such is life..

Yes, I get that, but we committed to grass roots footy also, and well before the criers so why not both clubs?
The article states that the money is for the Crers AFLW team to take their message of greater participation in the code to 10,000 girls. We don't have an AFLW team hence the reason we are not receiving this funding.

It's easy to see, and say, that the skills do need to lift but there hasn't been many comments on the standard if umpiring.

I think it has been ordinary at best and we can see why some umpires at the highest level are getting a free ride.

There was one non-decision at the weekend that no umpire should miss. The ball was marked by a crows player but it had gone out of bounds on the full. After quite a few seconds, and it was clear that it wasn't a mark, she threw the ball to the boundary umpire who then gave the ball to a Carlton player.

There wasnt a 50 metre penalty paid.

I have been really impressed by the attack on the ball, marking skills and team play. Some of the players have decent foot skills but the skills by hand need a lot of work.

Not fussed with the government subsidy as it is needed. It is the decisions of the SANFooL that still get my back up.

Agree. Until Port have a team I can't and won't watch or follow it.

Yes, in the third quarter Carlton did not get the reward they should have got for the amount of time they got that ball forward and in the last quarter Adelaide only managed to get one goal, and that by a lucky kick that fell to a free Erin Phillips. Although on occasion it was possible to get the ball from a tap-down in the centre and get it to goalkicking distance with one kick that was the exception rather than the rule. And if it was on the wings it was not just difficult but nearly impossible to hold onto the ball for the long distances needed to get a goal.

Wasn't the entire point of splitting this conversation off from the AFL Talk thread meant to be that people who aren't following the AFLW don't post about how they're not following it?

Watched on youtube a fair bit of the Glenelg v West game at the Parade. Have a slight vested interest as a girl I coached for 2 years (volleyball) was playing in it for Glenelg. She played bloody well, kicked 3 I think in the end. I actually thought a few of the Bays girls looked like they were good enough to play at AFL level. Maybe hard to tell as playing against a lower standard of opposition.
