Women's Footy general AFLW talk

Just putting it out there, something I've come about, if it does make it easier for all parties involved if we host the women's gf why not switch around the venues for our round 1 and 21 matches so that both the women's gf and the men's match can be played at the Gabba

Would be a much better option.

I've been to metricon a couple of times. I don't hate it as a ground but nearly 5 hours of footy in one-day and an hour or two in the car there and back does not excite me. I'd choose the aflw gf if forced to choose, but would leave both if it meant acdouble header

Exactly. It's not like we'd be forced to play it away. It's a grand final as well. It's worth a bit of travelling.

We need to maximise the attendance of new supporters - girls, families etc. These are the people we are targetting with AFLW. Taking kids to anything can feel like a bridge too far. Adding a ridiculous round trip will sour everything. You want to create an air of ease and fun for new supporters.

Maybe we should flip the bill for the Gabba then.

The afl committed to the minor premiers getting the home final. End of story.
If it was a Melbourne team there wouldn't be a discussion.
We will go to the final at the gabba. Go lions.

What if they wanted to play at the MCG instead of Etihad?

I'd still be about building the brand within the club and having it at etihad if that was the home ground.

This women's comp is a once only opportunity and it belongs to the clubs that have fostered the development opportunity. They need to do what is best for their fans as they are the ones that are going to put out $ in future to keep the comp alive.

So the AFL should write the clubs a blank cheque?

Of course, the entire discussion will be moot if we don't finish top. Probably have to win both games for that, and there are no gimmes in this comp (of our 5 wins only 1 wasn't in dispute with 5 minutes to play)

Weird results can happen in Darwin... hopefully the Dees can get over the Crows this week and really give us a bit of breathing room.

The afl are looking to establish a new business division with the aflw.
Normally billion $ businesses research the market, develop a business plan, employ the staff, invest the money in facilities and hope like hell they got it right.

The afl have already skimped- the players are paid way less per game /per minute on field/minute on the training track than the male counterparts. Hell, they don't even get workers compensation - instead they had to self insure medically (can't wait to see that play out. Medical insurers vs the afl).

The least they can do is provide an appropriate sized venue to house the many more fans than they expected that want to support the new division that they are going to make money from.

So, YES. there should be a blank cheque available to hire the venue for the finals.

A more apt comparison would be what if they wanted to play at Geelong instead of Etihad?

TBH as long as the ground is in good condition i cant see why they wont. There are people who will go the womens and not the mens, and those who will do both. But you put the womens down at metricon and there will be some people not going.

The AFLW is successful, they dont need to skimp on costs now. They will get their money back 10 fold by just doing the right thing in the first season. Sponsorship and broadcast rights are going to skyrocket in the future. Best thing for the code is a devoted packed out venue like the gabba full of people there to see them for them.

Metricon holds 25,000 wasn't our last home crowd 3,500?

The AFL will make a business decision but if that means Metricon is more suited for them then so be it.

Isn't Geelong made to play home games in Melbourne in the men's comp anyway?

Is Melbourne made to host games in Geelong?
