The arrogant pricks would have been counting on a Victorian team providing a curtain raiser at the MCG, I imagine. Heads in their arses as usual.
Pretty much what I have thought.

The narrow mindedness and the apparent lack of exploring/factoring in all possibilities in decision making, beggars belief (to my mind) at AFL headquarters.

The whole point of the AFLW was to attract a new demographic (and score social points). Putting it on just before a big derby game is just an insult to those that genuinely follow the AFLW.
That's certainly true now, (and excuse me while I throw up a little in my mouth, defending the AFL) but we have seen from the first round, with the bigger than expected crowds forcing venue changes, the success has been so much wider and higher than anticipated. The original rationale may well have been that giving the women a curtain raiser to the men's round one opener would have attracted great publicity for AFLW.
We now know of course that they don't need a tie to the men's game for that PR. As usual, the AFL is such a stodgy bureaucracy, that adapting to this new direction is almost in the 'too hard basket'. They have to now look at options that they were too shortsighted to see before.
So you're right, regarding the insult of playing second fiddle to a home & away match, but are they able to adapt quick enough? They should be.

To your point about the objective being to reach new demographics and social brownie points, let's not kid ourselves that this is the result of some social conscience or absolute love of football. Expansion is ultimately about improving the bottom line. More women, more kids, more viewers = more $$$$.
So yeah, while they are trying to grow the game, I believe they would be shortsighted enough to figure that this year's GF isn't important because there is no immediate financial return. They will be able to promote and publicise the event, regardless of its standing (eg. as a curtain raiser ). That it is outside of Victoria will only decrease their care factor.

I have felt ambivalent about Gold Coast . ..until now. If this is what we can expect from this new CEO, I have lost all of the meagre respect i had for their organisation.

Day 1 in the job and he comes out with such a transparent attempt to take kudos and the benefit of the women's GF, is an absolute disgrace.

He "thinks" gc supporters will support the lions women's team. Hell, he has been in the job for less than a day, he must have a great feel for the place.

GC is not brisbane, wasn't 30 years ago , isn't now. Maybe this new turd eating, afl house sycophant should concentrate on developing his girls academy, who got soundly thrashed by the lions academy a couple of weeks ago, instead of tryling to steal the respect and acclaim our girls have earnt.

We also probably shouldn't get ahead of ourselves, two rounds to go.

You're right, but I am hoping that they don't ostracise the grassroots fans by trying to gain a few more.

Wanted to put this somewhere but no idea where sorry! It doesn't seem to have been very well promoted.

Surely given the AFL is bankrolling the whole competition it's fair enough to let them decide.

As long as they decide to play it in Brisbane. The future of the game in Brisbane is at stake. The amount of publicity being given from unlikely sources at the moment eg ABC and other radio, local newspapers, tv etc. If the game is hijacked to the Gold Coast this will be lost.

I think it's either the Gabba or if the gabba isn't ready then Metricon. It isn't a bad backup option. Realistically though if the Gabba is ready they cant make any excuses not to use it.
They could get 10-12 000 at the gabba if not more, surely the promotion of the game in brisbane, to a large cohort of success starved fans, is worth more than a convenience to put the game as a curtain raiser

I think the pressure would be too much for the AFL to accommodate us.
The AFL will want it at Metricon.
Fox/Seven will want it at Metricon.
Suns will want it at Metricon.
The AFL saves money, Seven/Fox saves money and Suns make money.
It also saves the Lions money, if they are expected to chip in for buses etc.

As much as I hate the idea, I'm starting to think Metricon is the smartest venue all 'round. Hell, the AFL could have refused a Qld GF (might still).

There are times when you have to think with your heart and not your head. This is one of those times. The long term emotional effect of a Grand final at the Gabba after all our lean years will be priceless. We don't want to give that to our rivals.

Oh, I agree, but none of those parties I mentioned (other than The Lions) have any emotional investment and do have significant financial ones. For us it's a no brainer, but for everyone else...
