First A vent;
I am new member to this forum but have been reading it for a while; I cannot believe how some people talk about the Pies. I am a real supporter, every single player is out on the ground playing for Collingwood and I support them. I don’t criticise the players like a lot of Collingwood members do. Every player is doing the most they can while they are out on the ground. If you criticise you are not a supporter you are a member please don’t mix up the two. If you feel you pay to abuse the players then fine but please don’t call your self a supporter and cheer as that same player you just abused kicks a great goal or lays an amazing tackle.

Now some review about the year;
The pies played well and truly above themselves this year, they were never expected to finish in the top four, making the 8 would have been seen as a positive at the start of the year.

We have an average age of about 23 with some older guys to fill in key positions. The last 5/6 weeks of the year we started to get tired, young 20 – 23 year old guys running on empty causing a lot of pressure to be put on the older war horses.

Review of a few players;
Anthony – Great start of the year, got tired in the second half. He will kick 100 goals.

Cloke – Broken Jaw at the start of the year, House shot up mid year. Show me a 23 year old that could go through this and still play good football. Cloke needs to watch the ball onto the boot when kicking for goal instead of watching the goals. He will be a great CHF when he matures.

Davis – Played an amazing year and took on a lot of pressure near the end of the year with a tired group. He ran out of steam in the last few weeks. Davis will be a critical part of the team in the next few years when the young guys start to mature and he doesn’t have to take on a huge work load.

Didak – As with Davis.

Leigh Brown – Great for the team this year, started slow (members were very abusive) but really filled into his role. I saw his role in the team as a stand over man, with a young group we needed someone to stand up in push and shoving without Rocca this fell to Leigh.

Dawes – Going to fill in the Leigh Brown role next year of in a couple of years. Floating ruckman/Forward/Tall backman.

Fraser – Amazing year for a guy who had to ruck full games against multiple big ruckmen. Week after week he was our only ruckman and he played the game he had too. Yes he got beaten but he played consistently the whole game (After the Essendon Anzac Day fade out) he was still standing at the end of the game and contesting the ruck. There is no other player who took on the pressure Josh did this year and he did it well. Next year with Wood or Dawes helping out as second ruckman Josh will be able to play his major role as the go to man at CHF that he plays so well.

Medhurst – Came back into a team that didn’t have the same role for him as the year before. He seemed out of sorts playing in a role that didn’t suit him. He doesn’t have the midfield ability but was in a team of high rotation that cause him issues. A permanent spot as a small forward would suit him well, he just needs to play this from week one.

Reid – Lacked drive to chase the ball when he played in the AFL. He needs to put in more effort than he did this year or he won’t play again.

Drafting and Going forward;
Fevola – Don’t touch him, we have enough forwards (Jack, Cloke, Dawes, Rusling) and putting a 29 year old in a team that will peak in 3 or 4 years at the age of when he is 33 is a big mistake. We aren’t going to win a GF next year so don’t pick up players to try leave that to the Doggies and Carlton.

We are looking like a team that will really come together in 2 or 3 years and start to push for a premiership.

I see our team for next year as follows.

B: O'Brien N Brown Maxwell
HB: Shaw Dawes Toovey
C: Didak Swan Beams
HF: Fraser Cloke Davis
F: Dick Anthony Medhurst

FOLL: Wood Pendlebury Sidebottom

INT: Thomas Lockyer L Brown Goldsack

After a year or two.
Barham in for Lockyer
Rusling in for L Brown

This would enable
Midfield - Didak, Swan, Beams, Davis, Dick, Pendelbury, Sidebottom, Thomas, Lockyer all on heavy rotation through the middle (To reduce tiredness) and rotating through the small forward position for breaks.

Rucks - Wood for Centre bounce (backed up by Fraser), Fraser for forward (Backed up by Wood), Dawes for back (Backed up by Wood).

Forwards – Cloke and Fraser running up and playing on Half Forward Flanks. Jack running out of the goal square (He needs to stay back and not push up) with two small forwards crumbing one in front one behind.

I agree with most of it, but this here really needs to stop being said. You don't go 7 straight wins and make the prelims if you're 2-3 years away from a Grand Final. Our window opens next year, what you're saying here is we're going to stagnate for 2 years, making the prelim but never getting past it? Bollocks.

If we're only starting to push for a premiership in 3 years Swan, Didak, Davis will be past their best, Presti, Lockyer, O'Bree will be gone and people will be saying we need to wait for the young guys we will get to replace them to build up, and the eternal cycle will continue.

I agree that we should be able to push for a premiership the biggest issue is the number of young guys that held us back this year. It was obvious that the old guys took up more slack than they should have during the year and that the young guys just ran out of legs. We will push but a lack of experience and age is against us for a couple of years. You really need the bulk of your group in the 25 - 27 year age group to enable you to run out the year.

If we're only starting to push for a premiership in 3 years Swan, Didak, Davis will be past their best, Presti, Lockyer, O'Bree will be gone and people will be saying we need to wait for the young guys we will get to replace them to build up, and the eternal cycle will continue.

Yes guys like Swan. Didak, Davis will be past their prime but Pendels, Cloke, Thomas, Anthony, Maxwell, Shaw, O'brien, Wood will be hitting their prime and Beams, Sidebottom, Barham etc will have a few extra years of maturity that will offset the older guys.

The problem with Collingwood is we play consistenly good football but not great football. This results in us overachieving with a young team and not picking up the prime draft picks to enable extra team building. This will always result in us never having a great team to hit all in one year like we have seen with Geelong, Hawthorn and StKilda who underperformed for 3 or 4 years and peaked when their teams were in the 26/27 year old range.

Dawes at CHB?

Can't say I agree with that. I think N.Brown will hold down that position at the start of the year. Presti to take FB.

If Presti is playing I totally agree. But if Presti doesn't play then I can see potential in Dawes at CHB, bigger body to match the likes of J.Brown etc. It may not work out and we may need to find another option but he has the potential.

Brown is able to hold down this role, the only reason I believe he didn't play much this year is because L Brown was playing a similar role.

One of the more inaccurate comments I've seen. It's actually borderline arrogant when people think they're better supporters than others just because they refuse to criticise.

If a player warrants criticism, he'll get it. If he warrants praise, he'll get it. Why would we dish out deserved praise, but turn a blind eye to it when he deserves criticism?

If he tries his best, but isn't good enough, then he isn't good enough. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying he isn't good enough.

The bolded is exceptionally ridiculous.

Supporting the club isn't just blinding fapping over everything to do with the club. Passionate fans can disagree with aspects of the club, it doesn't make them bad supporters.

No offence meant, but the above is just wrong.

Reid – Lacked drive to chase the ball when he played in the AFL. He needs to put in more effort than he did this year or he won’t play again.
How dare you criticize our players. You call yourself a supporter?!

See how hard it is to discuss footy without some necessary criticism?

Dawes might seem like he has potential but it won't happen.

They have been playing Reid at CHB in the VFL and he will be next in line to take that position as he showed a lot of promise this year.

:thumbsu:Amen to this.

I wonder how many of these supporters sat through the 1995-2000 era when at best you could call us a disgrace on the field and all sat their clapping their hands cheering us on without saying anything negative about us. It's a fair bet they were not watching then and have only seen the current "golden" era where we still haven't won a flag during that time despite coming close a few times. I remember yelling out to Tony Shaw at Vic Park "how long do we have to put up with this sh*t for", I wasn't alone as 90% of the crowd were in agreeance with me which means Collingwood had a lot of members back then but not supporters.

Some fans/supporters/members do like to vent and criticise (some too harshly I admit) because they've watched the Pies all their lives and have seen Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn, Brisbane, North Melbourne, Adelaide, Essendon and even now Geelong all do better in the last 40 years or so.

Watching the Pies over the years has given me far more frustration and heartbreak than anything else but that doesn't mean I don't love them and it won't stop me watching them hoping one day, they just might win another flag. The joy I'll feel when/if they finally win one will rival my wedding day and the day my daughter was born it means that much to me.

20 years is a bloody long time and despite the great work Eddie and Mick have done the last 10 years we haven't tasted success - and coming 2nd, 3rd and 4th isn't success, just ask fans from the aforementioned teams. They'll tell you there's nothing like it and as an 18 year old in 1990 I've forgotten how good it was.

agree to an extent I think we had a very good year and a very bad finals series and this is where the negativity is coming from. But the way I've been seeing it is that we only played 1 full quarter of our very Best footy during the finals and still made it to the preliminary must be doing something right:thumbsu:

I agree we are doing some things right, but why play one good quarter of footy in the 3 games that matter the most?

Inexperience, poor form, whatever - we fix this and we're right.

Collingwood do need to realise though that just because you're not ready doesn't mean you can't win it. History is littered with ordinary teams that shouldn't have won a flag but did. We can't all be as good as Geelong, or Brisbane but when we get an opportunity we need to take it - like we did in 1990. We were not highly rated that year but did it. I just wish we won the 2002 GF, that was our one to win but Brisbane got over the top of us - in hindsight that was the one but alas...............

I think the finals performance once again showed that MM's coaching style, game plan and the playing list he has assembled rely heavily on 22 players contributing during a match.

We couldv'e stretched StKilda in the first final, but playing Fraser and having Pendles and Beams both go down with injuries hurt us more then it probably should have.

We need to develop our list, and more importantly our best 22-25 players, so that if we lose one player during a match or even before the match, we have the capability to respond in a manner which is efficient and effective.

Our depth was tested late in the year, and was exposed a little bit, but if anything, that just showed we are not quite there yet, and we need some of younger players to develop before we can push for a flag.
