So those big numbers came in his last 4 seasons, 93-96
Can't say I remember when he was moved to permanent full forward but he didn't tear us apart goal wise at all between 87-92 except the semi.

92 I think was the first time he played deep full forward on a full time basis like a Lockett or Dunstall.

Haha * me dead im on abletts stat page it says W so obviously that means the cats won.

cant for the life of me remember that game, got a feeling we might have been away on a family holiday in Fiji however, used to go there every year around that time, well done Ingo I would guess for keeping him goal less, ****ing loved Ingerson.

Makes sense
93-95 he went 124, 129 and 122 goals lol
His 124 came from 17 games. Would legit take most key forwards 2 seasons and finals to kick this.

Cats had Gavin Excell for a few years before that, he used to play deep full forward im pretty sure. Ablett would still spend some time deep forward but would play half forward also

yea...

In 1989 he kicked a career high 63 goals which topped Geelong's goalkicking in the home and away season but injury prevented him from lining up in the Grand Final. His best individual haul that year was nine goals in a shootout against Hawthorn at Princes Park where Geelong, despite scoring 163 points, lost the game. He kicked another eight the following week against St Kilda.

It's hard not to argue Ablett kicks 1500 if he played permanent FF more in his career, what a freak. Was he that good as a winger flipping forward? Might need someone a bit older.

He was a very good winger, wasn't until he was moved forward permanently when Malcolm Blight arrived at Geelong before he truly became a great though. Still would have made the hall of fame if he played wing and half forward his whole career however.

Going off what my old man told me mainly the above is, he said Hawthorn didnt want to lose him when he left. Was showing great promise but Geelong offered him far more money and they had Dipper on a wing already. Imagine Ablett and Dipper as your starting wings, Jesus Christ, two of the hardest hitting wingers of all time

They never ever talk about him as a winger anywhere, all his highlights are hangers and sick goals. I'm assuming he was a beautiful kick inside 50 and was a nightmare to tackle. Crazy that after the 89 grand final they didn't move him to permanent full forward then but I spose when you're still kicking 80 up the ground it's not desperate.

Look at where he lets this rip from...unbelievable.

hes getting touches in the midfield and at half back here so maybe he didnt get moved exclusively to FF til 93 then.

They would have more footage of him as a forward I assume as well.

Yea just everyone talks him up as the freak full forward but how did he rate as a winger? Assuming he was still a superstar
I’m a bit young to remember his pre full forward days in much detail, but I thought he was a half forward rather than wing.

And yes, he was a superstar further up the ground. He could do things nobody else could up the ground, whereas Geelong had other options who could play deep forward effectively.

Different game back then, lower possession counts and for those who hate ‘over umpiring’ some games back then were whistle fests, especially holding the ball/incorrect disposal.

Ablett was the most brilliant individual footballer I can remember watching. Sometimes selfish, they didn’t record goal assists back then but they would’ve been tiny. As a full forward any time he was in range he was having a shot. His highlights show his amazing goals, but he missed a hell of a lot too. When he had a stinker it really hurt Geelong, but when he was on (which was often) he was phenomenal.

Built like Petracca, attacked the ball in the air like Naughton, ran like Dangerfield, smashed guys like nobody does in today’s game.

Generating 200 shots at goal in 94 and 95 (at the age of 33 and 34!), not even 10 Brownlow votes in those years.

after doing some research it appears my father told me a bunch of lies (or more likely I remembered shit incorrectly)

Ablett played midfield/half forward early days, he actually retired from Hawthorn in season to play country football with Myrtleford coz he hated the city lifestyle that much.

Edit: Tom Hafey started him on the WING his first game for Geelong the following season and he was BOG. So it appears I did remember things correctly? I dont ****ing even know what's correct anymore.

Changing subject slightly, but we're currently on a 62 game streak of conceding less than 100 in a match.

From what I can see the only other team that's bettered that in the past 90 or so years won 5 flags in 6 years - I think you know who that was.

Given 2020 it's a bit of a cheat figure - and we've been lucky at times (see last week for reference) - but otherwise rarified air.

And now that I've pointed it out, watch it end in the next few weeks as a team eventually gets a hold of our defence...
