I've got mixed feelings about the interview tbh. There were parts of it that either didn't come across properly in the article, or weren't published at all.

I'm certainly not a fan of the 'everything is fine, just trust us' approach, and I'm glad Garry called that out. Honestly, I was more impressed (less unimpressed?) by Goodwin than I was with Pert. There was at least a level of authenticity to Goodwin at times throughout, which we don't really see very often.

Pert on the other hand really took the managed, PR style approach to the whole thing. Inferring that Lyon doesn't know what goes on within a footy club environment was pretty poor.

Regardless, nothing about it made me feel a whole lot better, but I do hope they stick to their call to 'open up the club' more. The club has reeked of having a superiority complex vs their supporters recently, so hopefully that's the first step to displaying a bit of respect to the people that make the club viable.

I agree with this - my expectations of Goody's public speaking are low but I thought he sounded calm and resolute and spoke quite well.

Didn't the All Blacks just lose the World Cup by 1 point to South Africa?

Surely lots of LEARNINGS to be learnt over the ditch then - did they win on expected score too?
Had +32 inside-22s I heard

Goodwins comments around not speaking to Smith because he's too angry, and Pert's around not seeing any need to speak to families of players, really do nothing to support their constant elite culture statements. Apparently it's the best culture Pert has seen in his 40 years of footy!

The comments around supporters not understanding how a footy club/environment work were also very poorly delivered.

Good on them for fronting up and taking part in the interview, even if it was a somewhat controlled environment, but as an outside looking in, it doesn't fuel me with much confidence around the Dee's moving forward.

Isn't the cub barred from speaking to Smith at all while the ASADA stuff plays out? Pert noted that in his statement.

That's a broad interpretation of what the statement said. Smith being "provisionally suspended from any involvement with the Club" reads more as if he is not able to turn up to work. It would be extraordinary if the club isn't able to speak to him, either for welfare reasons or to get his version of events.

From my recollection Essendon obviously was able to work with its players on their defence during ASADA investigation, they just weren't able to turn up and train or use the facilities.

Pert said it was his role to communicate with Smith initially and link him with the AFL and doping people - and that the club would then be advised at the end of the process what the sanction was.

I think Goody was trying to communicate how disappointed he was - not that he was freezing Smith out for the sake of it.

Really all I wanted to hear was the club take responsibility for not being at its best and not being happy with two top 4 straight sets exits, the only club that's ever done that btw

**** this being proud of being successful because of top 4.

Might as well have hoped for Goody to say that getting junk inside 50s is a terrible game plan and tall, slow forwards are useless.

I also noticed the specific use of both present and future tense.
yep, was very carefully selected wording which points to the obvious - sort of goes against the grain of "transparency". Hopefully you guys can turn this around quickly.

Brilliant article by Peter Ryan just published online. First commentator to really get stuck into the hubris and arrogance of the club post the 2021 flag win. Must read for all supporters.

“We hear Steven May say “our team’s so much better than these guys” and no one internally condemning him.
“We see a club with great players. But we don’t see a great club.”
“The Demons risk being another club that found handling success as challenging as achieving it.”

Ouch.

Tell me you didn't actually listen to the interview without telling me you didn't actually listen to the interview...

That was certainly a huge give away lol.

Like, he might as well just yes on the spot.

Pert's spin that we hold all our players to the same standard made me want to throw my phone into the nearest wall.

I agree with Pert. Whoever wins finals isn't necessarily the best team. It's who was best on the day. it's the exact reason why the NBA do a finals series and not just a once off game.

No-one was mentioning the culture problem in 2021 with practically the same playing group and coaching staff.

If Maynard said Pert is full of shit who would you back?

Two experienced footy journos sitting there and they didn’t think to ask Pert …

“If the club has known (as you say) about Clayton’s ‘serious issues’ for at least 2-3 years, why on Earth did you recently sign off on a 7 year / close to $7 million deal for him? Does that not strike you as even slightly irresponsible and indeed negligent?”

That’s because the culture problems were allowed to fester and develop after that 2021 flag. No humility, no leadership. Just arrogance and hubris. Goody not smart enough/emotionally equipped enough to handle the success.

The biggest laugh in that interview was Pert having a wank over the McClelland Trophy and using that as proof that the club has zero culture issues.
